Manchester United finished in the top four in their first season under Erik ten Hag &#8211; here, we preview their FPL and wider fantasy football prospects for the 2023/24 campaign.

<h2>Manchester United stats and best players</h2>
United started the season poorly, losing 2-1 at home to Brighton before a 4-0 drubbing at Brentford.
But ten Hag quickly adapted to the Premier League, delivering a 2-1 home win against Liverpool to kick-start their season.
It was soon followed by a 3-1 victory over Arsenal, however a 6-3 loss to Manchester City showed there was still much work to be done.
A 7-0 loss at the hands of Liverpool in March and injuries to key players including Lisandro Martinez threatened to derail their top-four hopes, however the Red Devils hung on to claim third place ahead of Newcastle.
The Carabao Cup winners scored 58 goals, the seventh-best figure in the league. But this fell well short of their expected goals (xG) tally of 72.47.
They kept 17 clean sheets, three more than any other team, ranking joint-third for goals conceded. This was slightly ahead of their expected goals conceded (xGC) of 48.1 but that figure was still good enough to rank inside the top four.

<h3>2022/23 season best players</h3>
Marcus Rashford&#8217;s form and confidence had slumped before ten Hag arrived as United struggled to sixth place in 2021/22.
But a Rashford revival was a huge factor in United&#8217;s turnaround, with the midfielder scoring 30 goals &#8211; his best return in a single season.
Seventeen of these goals came in the league, nine more than Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese playmaker was United&#8217;s joint-best assister, with nine alongside Christian Eriksen.
But the gap between his assists and expected assists (xA) was huge. It was more than double in fact, at 18.05, and no other player in the league had a higher xA.

United&#8217;s issues in scoring goals was largely a result of lacking a reliable number nine. Anthony Martial&#8217;s fitness often let him down and loan signing Wout Weghorst failed to score a league goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo left the club by mutual consent in November after an extraordinary interview with Piers Morgan in which he heavily criticised the club, its ownership and ten Hag.
Defensively, David de Gea captured the Golden Glove for most clean sheets, however he has since left the club after his contract expired.
In FPL, de Gea was United&#8217;s third-highest scoring player, with Luke Shaw in fourth having had a strong season.
Shaw&#8217;s attacking returns were limited to one goal and four assists &#8211; but at times United&#8217;s injury problems meant he had to fill in at centre-back.
The signing of Casemiro was crucial to United&#8217;s success, however the defensive midfielder was less of an FPL asset despite four goals and three assists. His tackling made him more appealing in formats like Sky and Telegraph.

<h3>New signings</h3>
Having brought in Mason Mount and Andre Onana, United turned their attention to signing a new striker.
Rasmus Hojlund&#8217;s transfer was confirmed on August 5, with Harry Kane apparently ruled out early on given Tottenham Hotspur&#8217;s reluctance to sell the forward to a rival club.
Hojlund has an injury that could keep him out for a few weeks, the club said upon signing him, and Rashford started up top in a friendly against Lens.
With Martial nursing a hamstring strain, this could be the set-up for Gameweek 1, although Jadon Sancho played the early pre-season games as a false nine.
We profiled the fantasy prospects of Onana <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/andre-onana-fpl-fantasy-prospects">here</a> &#8211; but regardless of how well he does, expect him to start between the sticks now de Gea has departed.
Mount has played two games at the time of writing but only one with Fernandes also in the starting lineup. He played a deeper midfield role in both, which may limit his early fantasy appeal &#8211; despite some attacking opportunities.
<h3>United starting 11</h3>
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez should be United&#8217;s first-choice centre-backs, with Luke Shaw at left-back.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot are competing for the right-back role and it is currently unclear who will come out on top. Dalot got 90 minutes against Lens on August 5 though.
Casemiro will again be an important figure in midfield, while Antony and Rashford are set for regular minutes once again. Amad Diallo suffered an ankle injury in pre-season.
Sofyan Amrabat, Morocco&#8217;s World Cup star, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. He would provide backup for Casemiro.
Alejandro Garnacho could see more game time in 2023/24 after flashes of brilliance last season. Rashford playing some minutes up top would help his cause.

<h2>Manchester United stats for Sky, TFF and Dream Team</h2>
Sky Sports Fantasy Football awards bonus points for passing, tackles, shots and saves. Players are awarded two or three extra points for 60/70 passes, four/five tackles, two/three shots on target and three/five saves.
In Sky, centre-backs and defensive midfielders are the ones who tend to pick up passing bonus most often. Tackles tend to come from full-backs and defensive midfielders.
Tackles are also a factor in Telegraph Fantasy Football for midfielders, who are awarded a point for every two tackles. Goalkeepers get one extra point for every save made.
And in Dream Team, the 2023/24 game has had a revamp. There’s no longer Star Man and WhoScored ratings, while a new bonus system is in play – see our guide <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/how-to-play-dream-team-fantasy-football-2">here</a> for full details.

It was a three-way tie for Sky bonus among United players last season. Fernandes, de Gea and Rashford all ended on 43 &#8211; a tally that was outside the top 20 bonus scorers overall.
Shaw and Martinez managed tier-two passing bonus seven times, with Martinez adding three tier ones. Shaw&#8217;s opportunity to score passing points was helped by his makeshift centre-back role.
Casemiro ranked third in TFF for total tackles (104) and could be an option for the 2023/24 season. Owners could do without a repeat of his two red cards though.
