<p>There are a lot of different ways of achieving success in <b>FPL.</b></p>
<p>Should we just choose one and go for it without further considerations? I believe we should explore other options too.</p>
<p>Some <strong>FPL</strong> managers thrive being aggressive taking hits. Others tend to play with low risk, avoiding hits even when struggling to field a full eleven in a <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fpl-blank-double-gameweek-guide-2021-22/"><strong>Blank Gameweek</strong></a>.</p>
<p>Some FPL managers get their motivation from a high gameweek score every once in a while. Others prefer to work steadily through the season, only caring about the overall rank after Gameweek 38.</p>
<p>It can be hard to choose the optimal strategy, and it’s easy to be influenced by others. Often it can end up in a chaos of mixed strategies.</p>
<p>We all have our own <strong>personality </strong>which affects the preferred strategies when playing <strong><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Fantasy Premier League.</span></strong><span data-preserver-spaces="true"> </span></p>

<h2>What is Personality? FPL Psychology</h2>
<p>To understand how our <strong>personality</strong> affects us we need to know what it consists of. I will explain this by a simplified model of four layers that make up our personality<strong>.</strong></p>

<h2>The Cemented Layer of Our Personality &#8211; FPL Psychology</h2>
<p>Deepest inside us we have our <strong>core values</strong>.</p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">These are things we learned in childhood. They&#8217;re so rooted in our personality that changing them is hardly possible. This is where we distinguish right from wrong.</span></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">We instantly know and accept a red card for a player after a ruthless tackle at knee height, regardless of whether the player is in our <strong>FPL</strong> <strong>squad</strong> or not. </span></p>
<p>One example from the top of my mind was the red card against Roy Keane when he ended Alf Inge Haaland’s career in April 2001 with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nGkafx3-Ks">this tackle</a><span data-preserver-spaces="true">. </span></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Looking at that tackle in isolation, everyone in their right mind would identify it as wrong. Despite not regretting it, I’m sure even Keane recognised it was a bad challenge.</span></p>

<h2>Attitudes &#8211; The Impressionable Personality Layer &#8211; FPL Psychology</h2>
<p>The next layer of our <strong>personality</strong> is our attitudes. These are things we have an opinion of based on our own experiences so far in life.</p>
<p>Our attitudes can be processed after enough positive or negative experiences, and this is where we meet situations that can be up for debate when trying to land decisions.</p>
<p>E.g. a lot of managers have a captaincy headache between <strong>Mohamed Salah (£12.5m)</strong> and <strong>Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) </strong>in Gameweek 2. <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-liverpool-best-player-picks/"><strong>Liverpool </strong></a>face <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/essential-burnley-fpl-stats/"><strong>Burnley</strong></a> at home and <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-manchester-united-fpl-players/"><strong>Manchester United</strong></a> are away to <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/southampton-fantasy-football-tips-team-preview/"><strong>Southampton</strong></a>.</p>
<p>This early in the season we won’t have enough data to base this decision on <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a>. In this coin-toss decision between equally attractive options, many are likely to choose <strong>Salah</strong> just because our attitude and experiences have taught us that <strong>home games are favourable to away games</strong>.</p>
<p>Overall, our core values and attitudes affect how we choose to behave. Together, they create the next layer in our <strong>personality:</strong> our basic behaviour.</p>

<h2>Basic Behaviour &#8211; Who we are When Nobody&#8217;s Looking &#8211; FPL Psychology</h2>
<p>Our basic behaviour is how we really want to be, without any external influence from the environment around us. However, this is challenging. When are we totally without influence of external factors? Well, probably only in our sleep. But regarding <strong>FPL</strong>, never.</p>
<p>If we want to be successful in FPL, we have a lot of external factors we need to take into account and adjust to.</p>
<p>Such factors can includes the likelihood of a player starting, his underlying <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> and his opposition. But there are many, many more.</p>

<h2>Adapted Behaviour &#8211; How We Actually Behave &#8211; FPL Psychology</h2>
<p>The last layer of our <strong>personality </strong>is our adapted behaviour.</p>
<p>As social animals it is a vital skill to be able to adapt, and we can choose what we want other people to see.</p>
<p>It is normal to act slightly differently around our grandparents compared to the pub with friends.</p>
<p>In <strong>FPL,</strong> we can choose which strategies to go for and which decisions we make after adapting to all external factors, whether this is in line with your <strong>personality</strong> or not.</p>

<h2>Make Decisions in Line With Your Personality &#8211; FPL Psychology</h2>
<p>If you are a <strong>patient FPL manager</strong> and reluctant to take hits, you can still get influenced to do the opposite. Even if it feels inherently wrong to do so.</p>
<p>Or someone might talk you out of taking a punt on a bold captaincy choice even though making aggressive captaincy picks is how you <strong>enjoy playing</strong> <strong>FPL</strong>.</p>
<p>If you make decisions and choose strategies that conflict with your inner conviction, you are more likely to be in a situation where you feel relief after a good outcome and anger after a bad outcome.</p>
<p>When making decisions in line with your <strong>personality</strong>, you&#8217;re more likely to be happy when you&#8217;re successful. Equally, you&#8217;ll find it easier to accept failures without being too hard on yourself.</p>
<p>It’s far easier to beat yourself up after FPL influencers, the Twitter community or fear of high effective ownership (EO) make you play a certain way.</p>
<p>Even if we’re all able to choose how we want to play, <strong>we should try to avoid conflicts between our basic and adapted behaviour</strong>.</p>
<p>To be able to be at ease with the decisions we make, take care of our mental health and <strong>enjoy FPL to the fullest,</strong> it&#8217;s wise to adapt the strategy of choice to our <strong><span data-preserver-spaces="true">personality</span> </strong>rather than the other way around.</p>
<p>This doesn’t mean that you should stop listening to other people’s opinions. It&#8217;s always wise to consider all available perspectives.</p>
<p>But the decisions you make and the strategies you choose should be taken in line with <strong>what feels right to you.</strong></p>
