<h2>Andre Onana: The history</h2>
<p>Cameroon-born Onana joined Barcelona from the Samuel Eto&#8217;o Academy at the age of 14 but never made a senior appearance for the Spanish giants.</p>
<p>He joined Ajax in 2015, aged 18, initially playing in the Dutch club&#8217;s youth team before making his senior debut a year later.</p>
<p>It was at Ajax where he first teamed up with Erik ten Hag &#8211; and <strong>Lisandro Martinez (£5.0m) &#8211;</strong> and after a season at Inter Milan, Onana will now be reunited with his old boss.</p>
<p>During his time in Italy, Onana won the Coppa Italia and made it to the Champions League final.</p>

<p>Inter were defeated by Manchester City, however Onana gained the respect of Pep Guardiola, who described him as an <a href="https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/manchester-united-onana-pep-guardiola-27367474">&#8216;exceptional goalkeeper&#8217;</a>.</p>
<p>It hasn&#8217;t all be plain sailing for Onana though. He was banned for 12 months in February 2021 for taking a banned substance, although his suspension was reduced to nine months after he said he took his wife&#8217;s medication by mistake.</p>
<p>And Onana retired from international football in December, following a reported disagreement with Cameroon manager Rigobert Song. Onana had been sent home from the Qatar World Cup after the first group game.</p>
<h2>Andre Onana: Playing style</h2>

<p>Onana is renowned for his distribution, something ten Hag was clearly on the lookout for when scouting a replacement for David de Gea.</p>

<p>According to WhoScored data, Onana is a significant upgrade in terms of passing abilities. He averaged 38 passes per game at an accuracy of 79.2%.</p>
<p>De Gea averaged fewer passes (28.5) at a lower success rate (68.3%).</p>
<p>The Spaniard&#8217;s discomfort playing out from the back was evident in ten Hag&#8217;s debut season. A poor pass led to Brentford&#8217;s second in United&#8217;s early season <a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11667/12672686/david-de-geas-mistakes-cost-manchester-united-at-brentford-but-is-he-suited-to-erik-ten-hags-style-of-play">4-0 hammering</a> against <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-brentford-fpl-players-2">Brentford</a>.</p>
<p>Onana&#8217;s passing may improve United&#8217;s build-up play, however his confidence on the ball might lead to a few hair-raising moments.</p>
<p>As can be seen from the footage below, he sometimes takes the phrase &#8216;sweeper keeper&#8217; to a whole new level.</p>

<h3>Shot-stopping abilities</h3>
<p>What de Gea lacked in distribution he made up for elsewhere, with a showreel of reflex saves keeping United in many a game over 12 years.</p>
<p>Onana&#8217;s Serie A save percentage of 73.5% was slightly higher than de Gea&#8217;s 71.1% in the Premier League last season, according to <a href="https://fbref.com/en/comps/Big5/keepers/players/Big-5-European-Leagues-Stats">FBref.com</a> data.</p>
<p>That was only good enough for joint-eighth in the Italian league, below that of Tottenham Hotspur&#8217;s <strong>Guglielmo Vicario</strong> (73.9%).</p>
<p>His Champions League numbers were much higher though, at 80.7%, and he made the most saves (47) in the competition.</p>

<h2>Andre Onana: FPL prospects</h2>
<p>United defensive coverage has proved popular among FPL managers so far.</p>
<p>The Red Devils kept the most clean sheets last season (17), a likely key reason behind <strong>Luke Shaw (£5.5m) </strong>having the third-highest ownership among defenders at 33.4% at the time of writing.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s worth noting though that United&#8217;s expected goals conceded (xGC) was only fourth best.</p>
<p>Onana has already been picked by 12.4% of managers. At £0.5m cheaper than Shaw, he could ultimately prove the most popular route into the United defence.</p>

<p>New signings always represent a risk, given it can take time for them to settle in.</p>
<p>But if he hits the ground running quickly, Onana could be an excellent FPL asset.</p>
<p>FPL&#8217;s <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fpl-bonus-points">bonus point system</a> takes metrics including pass completion into account, which combined with saves could help Onana become more of a bonus magnet than de Gea.</p>
<h3>Goalkeeper bonus stats</h3>
<p><strong>David Raya (£5.0m) </strong>scored the most bonus among goalkeepers last season, racking up 20 extra points.</p>
<p>He made more saves than any other goalkeeper (154), completing 896 passes at a success rate of 61%.</p>
<p><strong>Alisson (£5.5m) </strong>completed the most passes (1,033) at 83% accuracy, making 108 saves for 15 bonus points.</p>
<p>Onana made fewer appearances for Inter, playing 24 times in Serie A. He completed 837 passes in that time, at 81.3% accuracy.</p>
<p>His 2.54 saves per game fell well short of Raya&#8217;s 4.05, however his passing numbers show he has the ability to mix it with the best when it comes to bonus potential for goalkeepers.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/predictions">Hub AI</a> ranks Onana joint-12th for predicted points over the first five gameweeks &#8211; but there are caveats to many of those above him.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s unclear whether Raya or <strong>Mark Flekken (£4.5m) </strong>will be Brentford&#8217;s number one and the same can be said at Brighton, where <strong>Jason Steele (£4.5m) </strong>has competition from <strong>Bart Vergbruggen (£4.5m)</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Ederson (£5.5m) </strong>comes in at £0.5m higher than Onana and is heavily reliant on clean sheets. The Brazilian made just 46 saves last season, finishing with eight bonus points.</p>
<p><strong>Nick Pope (£5.5m) </strong>is also at that top price point and Newcastle rank among the worst for their opening fixtures, according to our <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fixture-ticker">customisable ticker</a>.</p>
<p>Predicted points will change as Gameweek 1 approaches, while <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fpl-pre-season-results-guide">pre-season friendlies</a> may resolve some uncertainties.</p>
<p>As things stand, Hub AI thinks there are better options. But those looking to cover the United defence and after a nailed-on starter may still be tempted to back Onana as a long-term set and forget choice.</p>

<p>Goalkeeper saves are a factor in Sky Sports Fantasy Football and Telegraph Fantasy Football, while Dream Team&#8217;s <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/how-to-play-dream-team-fantasy-football-2">new bonus system</a> also rewards shot-stopping skills.</p>
<p>De Gea was the eighth-best goalkeeper for bonus in Sky last season, managing 43 points from saves bonus.</p>
<p>A combination of saves and clean sheets made de Gea the fourth-highest scoring player in Telegraph.</p>
<p>Onana&#8217;s 2.54 saves per game compares similarly to de Gea&#8217;s 2.65 &#8211; and should United perform similarly defensively, Onana could be equally as effective as his predecessor.</p>
