<h2 style="text-align: left;">Who are the Best FPL Defenders For Gameweek 16?</h2>

Joao Cancelo (£6.8m) – Manchester City</h3>
Fixture: Wolves (H)
Joao Cancelo has blanked in his last three games but I wouldn't let this put you off him. He still remains as one of the best defenders in the game and City have the best defence.
The Portuguese has 8 Shots in the Box, an xG of 2.77 (1st amongst defenders) and has created 15 Chances. Cancelo's xA is 2.38 (2nd among defenders).
He also has the most successful final third passes in the league (352) which shows just how much time he spends in the opposition half.
Manchester City play Wolves in Gameweek 16 who have really been struggling to score goals. They have only managed to notch 12 goals (19th) with an xG of 18.4 (16th).
Bruno Lage's side have been lacking in the finishing department and with City’s defensive numbers, this looks like a banker for a clean sheet.
The Citizens have only conceded 9 goals (1st) with 66 Shots in the Box (1st) and an xGC of 10.3 (1st).
The bookmakers also rank them as the clear favourites to keep a clean sheet in Gameweek 16 at a mighty 62%. Pep Guardiola's team are also favourites to score 2.5+ goals (54%).
The stats tell us that Cancelo should have a very good chance of returns this week.
Our <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/predictions/">Points Prediction Tool</a> ranks him as the third highest predicted scoring defender (5.8 points). Cancelo is also at 71% for anytime returns (2nd overall).

<h3>Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.7m) – Arsenal</h3>
Fixture: Southampton (H)
The Japanese right-back has started every game in the league since his arrival and looks to be the most nailed in that defence.
He has some attacking threat too with an xG of 0.22, 9 Chances Created and an xA of 0.78.
Arsenal come up against Southampton in Gameweek 16. The Saints have only scored 14 goals (18th) with an xG of 18.7 (13th).
They have largely struggled in front of goal and have failed to win any of the last four league games.
Admittedly, the Gunners haven't been the best at the back. They have conceded 22 goals (14th) with an xGC of 24.4 (16th).
They have kept six clean sheets (3rd) though and keep most of them against the lesser teams. This includes the likes of Norwich, Burnley, Brighton, Leicester, Watford, and Newcastle United.
Therefore, I think they have a good chance against Ralph Hasenhüttl's men.
Arsenal are also the fifth favourites to keep a clean sheet this week according to the bookmakers (42%).
I like their chances of a clean sheet this week and believe Tomiyasu is their best defensive asset. He is nailed to start and possesses some attacking threat too.

Reece James (£5.7m) – Chelsea</h3>
Fixture: Leeds United (H)
Reece James has four goals and four assists in only 9 starts this season. He has the joint-most attacking returns from all defenders and is certainly one of the most attacking.
James has registered 10 Shots in the Box with an xG of 1.77 (2nd amongst defenders) and has created 20 Chances. His xA totals 2.27 (2nd amongst defenders).
Chelsea welcome Leeds United to Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 16. The Whites have struggled in the final third and have only scored 14 goals (17th) with an xG of 20.1 (9th).
The big difference between actual goals with their xG can be put down to poor finishing. This is personified by the absence of Patrick Bamford as they never had a competent replacement.
Although he is back fit now, I think it may take him a few games to return to full match fitness.
The Blues have only conceded 9 goals (1st), 87 Shots in the Box (2nd) and an xGC of 17.2 (3rd).
 Thomas Tuchel's troops were put to the sword against West Ham last week but conceded their first goal due to individual mistakes.
Their fixture this week is a lot more straight forward and chances of a clean sheet will be much higher.
The bookmakers have Chelsea as the second favourites to keep a clean sheet for Gameweek 16 at 52% and they are also third favourites to score 2.5+ goals (45%).

<h3>Trent Alexander Arnold (£8.1m) – Liverpool</h3>
Fixture: Aston Villa (H)
Alexander-Arnold is the second highest scoring player in the game with one goal, seven assists and eight clean sheets.
He has created 42 Chances (2nd), 9 Big Chances (2nd) with an xA of 5.26 (2nd). Only Bruno Fernandes and Mohamed Salah are ahead in these metrics.
Liverpool play Aston Villa at home in Gameweek 16 and this looks like another good fixture for Trent. The Villains have scored 21 goals (7th) with an xG of 17.4 (17th).
They seem to have picked up form since the appointment of Steven Gerrard with three wins in his first four games.
Yet Liverpool away from home is always going to be a tough task.
Not only have they been great going forward, but their defence has also been solid. They have only conceded 12 goals (3rd), with 96 Shots in the Box (3rd) and an xGC of 15.7 (2nd).
Liverpool are the third favourites to keep a clean sheet (48%) this week. Jürgen Klopp's team are also the second favourites to score 2.5+ goals (48%) which bodes well for Alexander-Arnold at both ends of the pitch.
The right-back has goal and assist threat while also playing in a very strong defence. He is also on a lot of <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-set-piece-takers/">set-pieces</a>.
Unsurprisingly, our <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/predictions/">Points Prediction Tool</a> has him as the highest scoring defender (6.3) for Gameweek 16 and he is also at 71% for anytime returns (2nd overall).

<h3>Alex Telles/Luke Shaw – Manchester United</h3>
Fixture: Norwich (a)
Manchester United also have an enticing fixture this week as they come up against Norwich (a).
The Red Devils are the fourth favourites to keep a clean sheet this week (45%). Manchester United have only kept three shut outs (17th), conceding 24 goals (15th) with an xGC of 24.4 (16th).
However, I think they will be much more solid under Ralf Rangnick.
They only conceded 4 Shots in the Box against Crystal Palace, kept a clean sheet and limited them to very few chances.
United come up against a Norwich side who have only managed to score 8 goals (20th) with 82 Shots in the Box (20th), 44 Shots on Target (20th) and an xG of 15.5 (20th).
The Canaries are the worst attacking side in the league in terms of outputs and underlying numbers.
Alex Telles has now started the last three games in the absence of the injured Luke Shaw. He has been impressive and looked threatening going forward.
Telles is the most attacking defender for United and is even on corners and free-kicks.
Nevertheless, it's worth keeping an eye on the press conferences before the deadline because if Luke Shaw is fit, he should start.
The English left-back is also on corners and some set-pieces. As a result, he has created 23 Chances with an xA of 1.95 (1st among United defenders).
