What is the best FPL Double Gameweek 27 Free Hit team?

The Best Double Gameweek 27 Free Hit Team – Goalkeeper and Defenders

Nick Pope and Ben Mee (£4.8m and £5.4m)

I keep beating this drum but a goalkeeper with a Double Gameweek is a must own in the majority of circumstances, especially when you are on a Free Hit.

The choice is rather easy, with only Burnley playing twice.

Burnley are known for their defensive rigidity over their frontline. Despite a 3-0 win on Saturday, I’m more confident in their defence than their attack and I have decided to opt for a double up at the back.

Ben Mee has the highest xGI out of defenders this season with 0.08 on average per game. An 8% chance of scoring isn’t spectacular but his two opponents in Crystal Palace and Leicester have struggled with defending set-pieces. This gives me hope for his prospects.

Since Gameweek 20, Burnley have played four of the ‘big six sides’ and kept a total of three clean sheets. They rank 7th-worst for xGC in that period. If there were more appealing attackers I think I would’ve opted just for Pope. Therefore, a punt on the likes of Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) is an alternative strategy that could pay off.

Harry Maguire (£5.4m)

Maguire gets this spot due to his safety of minutes in the Manchester United backline and by the fact he is £0.1m cheaper than Raphael Varane (£5.5m). Over the season, Shaw ranks the highest for xGI with 0.17 a game, but Telles looms over his shoulder. If budget is an issue, Diogo Dalot (£4.6m) should provide a similar return.

Since Roy Hodgson joined Watford in the latter half of their Double Gameweek 23, Watford have averaged an xG of 1.0 a game, scoring on just one occasion in that period. Clearly they have underperformed but their attacking output is rather concerning.

Manchester United’s defence hasn’t been easy on the eye but, based on the same time period as above, they have conceded an average of 1.0 xGC a game, which is the joint-fourth best.

Joao Cancelo (£7.1m)

It was a tricky day at the office against Spurs, but Cancelo was peppering the goal throughout the game. At the moment he is the only Man City defender I would want as the blues looked poor at the back against Spurs.

Everton is a much easier opponent and they were the side to accumulate the lowest xG in Gameweek 26 at just 0.2 against Southampton.

The Best Double Gameweek 27 Free Hit Team – Midfielders

Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m)

Bruno Fernandes faces Watford at home after back to back double-digit returns. Watford’s defence has been surprisingly solid since Hodgson joined in Gameweek 23. Only six teams have been tighter at the back over this period, so that’s why I wouldn’t want more than one Man United attacker.

Over his last six games, Bruno has averaged an xGI of 0.8, the seventh highest in the league which has been split pretty much evenly between his assist and goal potential. An interesting thing I noticed was his cheaper teammate, Jadon Sancho (£8.9m), has averaged a 0.9 xGI average, in one fewer game. He provides us with an option that is nearly £3.0m cheaper.

Heung-Min Son (£10.7m)

Tottenham play Leeds in Double Gameweek 27 and like most Leeds fixtures, I fancy Spurs’ frontline to get plenty of space and chances.

Leeds rank third-bottom over the season for xGC, averaging 1.8 every single game. Norwich are the only side to concede more goals this season.

Astonishingly, Son has only blanked once in his last nine appearances.

Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling (£8.7m and £10.7m)

Over the period of Everton’s last six gameweeks, they rank 7th highest for xGC, conceding 1.5. The new manager bounce hasn’t seemed to last very long under Lampard after their performance against Southampton last week.

Man City are still consistently the second-best attack in the league and the best attack that feature in Blank Gameweek 27. Mahrez is my first pick from City, with his penalty duties clearly giving him a higher ceiling. The fact he came off the bench last Gameweek indicates to me that he is in line to start.

Over Mahrez’ last six appearances he has had an average of 0.8 xGI, which is only bettered in the Man City midfield by Raheem Sterling.

During the same timeframe, Sterling has had an average of 0.9 xGI a game, which is a massive turnaround compared to last season. His hefty price tag might be a slight issue but I think he’s one of the best midfield options this gameweek. With that said, a punt on one of the other cheaper Man City midfielders is definitely viable.

The Best Double Gameweek 27 Free Hit Team – Forwards

Harry Kane (£12.2m)

I backed Harry Kane to come into form last gameweek thanks to his impressive underlying numbers and the rewards were truly reaped. He maintains his place in this week’s Free Hit as he faces Leeds. He’s definitely the premium forward of choice.

Leeds’ frailties have already been explored when discussing Son.

Wout Weghorst (£7.4m)

With Burnley being the only side with a Double Gameweek 27, I think a triple up is well worth the punt.

Since the Austrian joined the league in Gameweek 23, he’s bagged three returns in four games. His underlying numbers show he has been over-performing: he’s averaged 0.4 xGI per game in his limited sample size but he’s definitely the prime pick from Burnley’s attack.

Cornet would be the only other option I would consider but his underlying numbers are poorer – though there is a much greater sample size.

Burnley, however, rank second-bottom for xG since Gameweek 21, so I wouldn’t be getting too excited. It’s a Double Gameweek roll of the dice!

Armando Broja (£5.4m)

Norwich rank bottom for xGC over their last six games, conceding an average of 2.3 a game. Every Free Hit needs a budget enabler and I think a Southampton attacker is the value pick this week.

I’ve opted for Broja. His minutes look the safest amongst the Saints frontline. He ranks joint third for xGI over the last six games with a 0.5 average. Che Adams and James Ward-Prowse have pretty much matched him over that time in regards to that metric and the latter is completely nailed and is the best set-piece taker in the league. But he requires more budget.

If you’re feeling like more of a punt, the latter two should be options to consider.
