<h2 style="text-align: left;">The Best FPL Defenders for Gameweek 38</h2>
<h3><strong>Joao Cancelo (£7.2m) – Manchester City</strong></h3>
<p><strong>Fixture: Aston Villa (H)</strong></p>
<p><strong>Joao Cancelo</strong> has had a great season, with one goal, 11 assists and 19 clean sheets. He could very well finish the season as the highest-scoring defender in the game as he now sits only six points behind Trent Alexander-Arnold.</p>
<p>Manchester City end the season with a favourable home fixture to Aston Villa. Steven Gerrard’s side have scored 49 goals (8<sup>th</sup>) with an xG of 46.34 (14<sup>th</sup>). They have been around mid-table when it comes to attack, but I think they will do very well to get anything in this game.</p>
<p>City have only conceded 24 goals (1<sup>st</sup>) with an xGC of 28.5 (1<sup>st</sup>). Just for context, Liverpool have the second best xGC with 35.0. Pep’s side have been far and away the best defensive team looking at the stats.</p>
<p>They are also at 58% (2<sup>nd</sup>) to keep a clean sheet this week, according to the bookmakers.</p>
<p>Also, we know the Citizens are one the best teams in the league going forward, and despite being a wingback Cancelo is one of their most attacking players. He has 1076 final third passes, which is the most of any player in the league.</p>

<h3><strong>Trent Alexander Arnold (£8.4m) – Liverpool</strong></h3>
<p><strong>Fixture: Wolves (H)</strong></p>
<p><strong>Trent Alexander-Arnold</strong> has also had a fantastic season. He is actually only four points from beating his previous FPL points record of 210 in 2019/20. He has two goals and 12 assists with an xG of 2.74 and an xA of 10.6 (1<sup>st</sup> amongst defenders).</p>
<p>Liverpool have the best fixture in Gameweek 38 from a defensive viewpoint. They come up against Wolves who have been one of the poorest teams in the final third. They have only managed to score 37 goals (17<sup>th</sup>) with an xG of 42.26 (17<sup>th</sup>).</p>
<p>Liverpool are solid defensively too. They have conceded only 25 goals (2<sup>nd</sup>) with an xGC of 35.0 (2<sup>nd</sup>) and have the same number of clean sheets (21) as City.</p>
<p>The bookmakers also have the Reds as the second favourites to keep a clean sheet (58%) in Gameweek 38.</p>
<p>With how attacking Liverpool and Trent are, he is just as likely to pick up attacking returns in most games as well as defensive. The right-back is on a lot of set-pieces and is only behind Cancelo for final third passes (860).</p>

<h3><strong>Gabriel (£5.4m) – Arsenal</strong></h3>
<p><strong>Fixture: Everton (H)</strong></p>
<p><strong>Gabriel</strong> has scored four goals with an xG of 3.14, and has created 11 Chances with an xA of 1.71.</p>
<p>Arsenal host Everton in Gameweek 38. The Gunners have been a decent defensive side this season. They have only conceded 47 goals (6<sup>th</sup>) with an xGC of 49.0 (8<sup>th</sup>). They have suffered a few bad results lately, but overall have had a decent season.</p>
<p>The Toffees haven’t been the best going forward either. They have scored 39 goals (16<sup>th</sup>) with an xG of 42.83 (16<sup>th</sup>) and only 15 of the goals coming away from home.</p>
<p>This is a must-win game for Mikel Arteta’s men, as they need a win here to have any chance of finishing fourth and qualifying for the Champions League.</p>
<p>They are also the fourth favourites to keep a clean sheet (40%) in Gameweek 38 according to the bookmakers.</p>
<p>Gabriel has chances of returns at both ends of the pitch here. The Brazilian is a goal threat from corners and free-kicks, and Everton have conceded the most shots (27) from set-pieces this season.</p>

<h3><strong>Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) – Chelsea</strong></h3>
<p><strong>Fixture: Watford (H)</strong></p>
<p><strong>Marcos Alonso</strong> has started the last seven league games now, and has managed two goals and one assist in that time. Over the season he has three goals and five assists, with an xG of 3.23 and an xA of 5.2 (4<sup>th</sup> amongst defenders). He has only started 24 games which makes his numbers even more impressive.</p>
<p>Chelsea have an extremely kind fixture in Gameweek 38 as they welcome Watford to Stamford Bridge. The Hornets have scored 33 goals (18<sup>th</sup>) with an xG of 41.47 (18<sup>th</sup>) and it looks unlikely they will add to their goal tally here.</p>
<p>The Blues on the other hand have only conceded 31 goals (3<sup>rd</sup>) with an xGC of 38.1 (3<sup>rd</sup>). They are also the third best attacking team looking at their goals scored and xG, so this makes Alonso a very exciting option this week.</p>
<p>Thomas Tuchel’s side are actually the favourites to keep a clean sheet (60%) in Gameweek 38 according to the bookmakers, and also the second favourites to score 2.5+ goals (48%).</p>
<p>A nailed Alonso is one of the best FPL assets in the game, and at the moment he is the first choice. He is always getting into very good goal-scoring positions and his attacking stats speak for themselves.</p>

<h3><strong>Ryan Sessegnon (£4.3m) – Spurs</strong></h3>
<p><strong>Fixture: Norwich (a)</strong></p>
<p><strong>Ryan Sessegnon</strong> has three assists in 12 starts for Spurs this season. He has started the last five games and has scored the second most points (27) amongst defenders in that time. He is also nailed to start now, with Sergio Reguilon out injured.</p>
<p>Spurs come up against Norwich in Gameweek 38, and this is another plum fixture for the North London club. The Canaries are all but relegated, but this is the most important game of the season for Antonio Conte's side.</p>
<p>Dean Smith’s men have scored 23 goals (20<sup>th</sup>) with an xG of 34.42 (20<sup>th</sup>). They have been the worst attacking team by quite some distance.</p>
<p>Furthermore, they come up against a very good defence in Tottenham’s. Spurs have only conceded 40 goals (4<sup>th</sup>) with an xGC of 44.2 (5<sup>th</sup>) and have a very good chance of keeping their 16th clean sheet of the season.</p>
<p>Sessegnon looks a great option for the last game of the season. He is only £4.3m and only owned by 0.7% of managers, so is a great differential. He is the best defensive option for Spurs at the moment in my opinion.</p>
