Best FPL Wildcard Team for Gameweek 11

Robert Sánchez (£4.6m)

I think Sánchez is the goalkeeper to have in the £4.5m price bracket.

Brighton’s fixture schedule now eases up in the weeks to come. Brighton have been a reliable defence for fantasy managers to rely on for a while now, especially in the easier fixtures. We saw previously against Man City that Sánchez has the capability to rack up the saves even in the difficult games so he would be my pick.

Ben Foster (£4.1m)

From the evidence we have this season, Foster looks like the most likely keeper in this price range to string together some starts so he would be my pick as the substitute goalkeeper.

He has started all three games under Claudio Ranieri as well which bodes well for him going forward. I would barely ever play him as Watford’s defence has been abysmal but you can’t ask for more than that at that price.

Trent Alexander Arnold (£7.6m)

Trent is ranked first in the league among defenders for chances created, big chances created, expected assists (xA) and expected goal involvement (xGi) this season. What also helps him is that Liverpool are ranked second for xG conceded.

His ability to contribute at both ends of the field makes Trent one of the most explosive assets in the game.

I see no reason not to select him in a Wildcard draft – he is an automatic selection for me.

João Cancelo (£6.4m)

Manchester City are ranked top for xG conceded, big chances conceded, shots conceded and shots in the box conceded this season. They have already kept six clean sheets this season.

Even though Man City have recorded just the single clean sheet in their previous four fixtures, they still warrant defensive investment as their underlying numbers over the season have been consistent.

Cancelo’s recent performances have been very impressive which makes me think that it’s his shirt to lose. He is versatile enough to play on both flanks should Pep decide to rotate which adds to his appeal.

Ben Chilwell (£6.0m)

Chilwell has scored in four of his previous six starts for both club and country and has found a rich vein of form. What I also like about him is that he has taken 17 corners in the four league games that he has started so the number of chances he can create via these set pieces is likely to help him in his bonus accumulation going forward.

“He wants defenders to score goals and attackers to do the defensive side. It’s quite funny because after the game against Newcastle, we won 3-0 but there’s part of me disappointed because I didn’t get a goal but I was buzzing that Reecey on the other side got two.”

This quote from Chilwell about Thomas Tuchel and his play style further emphasizes how he wants his wing backs to play. He is also ranked as the highest predicted points scorer among defenders for the next four Gameweeks after Trent according to the Fantasy Football Hub projections tool. Chilwell is FPL gold as of now.

Reece James (£5.8m)

I have just highlighted how Thomas Tuchel likes his wing backs to play. James himself has now scored thrice in his previous two Premier League starts which is no coincidence given some of the promising positions he has been taking up. Only Nuno Tavares has accumulated more penalty area touches per start than James this season.

Further, what’s also worth noting is that:

Chances conceded down the left flank this season:

1) Leicester 47
2) Burnley 44
3) Norwich 42
4) Watford/Newcastle 39

Reece James has already hauled against Newcastle and Norwich. He now faces three of those above-mentioned teams in his next four. If he starts, there is a good chance he can exploit their zonal weaknesses again.

Tino Livramento (£4.4m)

Livramento is an obvious pick. He has been excellent for Southampton this season and has made the right back position his own.

Southampton since their favorable fixture swing three Gameweeks ago are ranked as the best team for xG conceded. Livramento is an ideal player to have in your squad at that price.

Mohamed Salah (£12.9m)

There’s no debate on this one. Salah is top for xG in the league this season, in the form of his life and the most reliable captaincy option in the game.

Heung-Min Son (£10.2m)

The news that Antonio Conte has taken over the Spurs job automatically makes their assets more appealing. In his previous stints, the Italian has gotten off to great starts and given that Spurs embark on a favourable run of fixtures from Gameweek 12, owning one of their attacking assets is highly desirable. It’s almost as if this is the recipe for a new manager bounce.

It’s not as if Son’s numbers were poor under Nuno too. In fact, Son has also recorded at least one big chance involvement in each of his previous five league fixtures and his underlying numbers have been on the rise.

What further adds to his appeal is that he is also on corners. Although he is yet to create a big chance this season, the number of chances he can create through set pieces helps him earn bonus points more often than not as we saw in Gameweek 8 against Newcastle.

Phil Foden (£8.2m)

Foden has been in great form recently so looks to have established himself into Pep Guardiola’s first eleven. Since he started playing five Gameweeks ago, he is ranked fourth for xG and third for expected goal involvement (xGi) among all players in the league.

What’s also interesting to note is that only three players have registered more penalty area touches in this spell which just highlights how advanced Foden is playing and the dangerous positions he is getting into. It’s very hard to look past him at the moment.

Raphinha (£6.6m)

Raphinha for me is the best midfielder in his price range. His underlying numbers are as good as it gets for someone of his price. The Brazilian has recorded 19 big chance involvements in 27 matches this calendar year and remains in a league of his own when it comes to budget midfielders.

I think there’s a very good chance he hauls this week too given that there is a weakness on Leicester’s left flank to be exploited. Leicester have conceded the most number of chances down their left flank this season. They have conceded 51% of their chances down that flank as opposed to 22% centrally and 27% on the right. This bodes well for the Brazilian.

Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m)

No player has hit the woodwork more times than Mbuemo (6) this season. Mbeumo is also top among budget midfielders for big chances and despite the fact that the Frenchman is classified as a midfielder in the game, he’s often the furthest man on the field for Brentford.

He is the standout player in his price range, and has accumulated the highest xG among all the Brentford players. Brentford have a great run of fixtures coming up and Mbuemo is likely to represent excellent value.

Michail Antonio (£8.2m)

Antonio’s underlying numbers have been very impressive this season. The Hammers striker remains second only to Salah for xG despite missing one game due to suspension.

West Ham are fourth for xG, averaging 1.9 xG per game. They are a team in form and strike me as the sort of team who will score even against the difficult defences in the league.

They have some tough fixtures coming up (LIV wol mci BHA) but the fact of the matter is that they scored in each of these four reverse fixtures last season. David Moyes’ side scored 7 goals in the process and averaged nearly two goals per game.

Ivan Toney (£6.6m)

In isolation, both Mbeumo and Toney are bargains to be taken advantage of. Hence, I would have no hesitation doubling up on their attack.

I believe Toney is a set and forget pick for the long run. He is on penalties, and his creative ability is extremely underrated.

Toney is joint second among all players for big chances created this season. He is also second amongst forwards for expected goal involvement (xGi) – with only Antonio faring better.

With the high volume of chances that Toney creates, he is highly likely to get bonus points as well whenever he registers an attacking return.

Armando Broja (£5.0m)

The Chelsea loanee has registered two goals in his previous two starts. He was ruled out with an injury last week but I’d still pick him as he looks like the cheapest starting striker that will be available in FPL over the long term.
