Best FPL Wildcard Team for Double Gameweek 28 – Goalkeepers

Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m)

Ramsdale is the keeper to own over the coming weeks. He has shown time and again what he is capable of with his ability to haul big with save and bonus points. They also have a Double Gameweek in Gameweek 29, plus a fixture in Gameweek 30 and decent fixtures for the medium term.

Martin Dubravka (£4.4m)

I have selected Dubravka with the presumption that the Bench Boost would be activated in Double Gameweek 29. Newcastle have back to back doubles and Newcastle’s defensive numbers have improved markedly which makes Dubravka a good pick.

Best FPL Wildcard Team for Gameweek 28 – Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m)

Alexander-Arnold is a non-negotiable for me on Wildcard. He is ranked first in the league among defenders for chances created, big chances created, expected assists (xA) and expected goal involvement (xGi) this season.

Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m)

I think Chelsea’s Double Gameweek is a prime opportunity to take advantage of this week. They comfortably have the best odds to keep two clean sheets this gameweek. The bookmakers have given them a very healthy 45% and 49% chance of keeping a clean sheet in the two games respectively.

Those odds are in line with Chelsea’s fixture difficulty and defensive underlying numbers – only Man City have conceded fewer big chances or have a better xG non penalty than Chelsea this season.

I think Rudiger is the safest buy for the long term. He has missed just the one Premier League and UCL game this season.

Reece James (£6.2m)

I think the Wildcard presents an excellent opportunity to double up on the Chelsea defence. Don’t let it go to waste! Their games from Sunday to Thursday are well spaced out and James has already had his rest in the FA Cup. That makes me think that there is a very good chance that James could play both games in the double.

I understand that this may be a week too early to jump on him but he is an excellent long term buy. I say that because James has nine returns in 12 starts this season and is only behind Alexander-Arnold among defenders for expected goal involvement (xGi) per 90 this season.

Eric Dier (£4.6m)

This selection is based purely on the basis that Spurs have a Double Gameweek in Gameweek 29, a guaranteed fixture in Gameweek 30 and then potentially another Double Gameweek in Double Gameweek 33. Ideally, I’d pick one of their wing backs but none of them are nailed, which is why Dier is my preferred choice.

Max Kilman (£4.6m)

A Wolves defender is a good option to go with as they have a favourable double this week and then a guaranteed fixture in Gameweek 30 as well. I’ve opted for Kilman as he is completely nailed – he has played every minute in the league for Wolves so far this season and has decent goal threat from set pieces.

Best FPL Wildcard Team for Gameweek 28 – Midfielders

Mohamed Salah (£13.2m)

He’s Mohamed Salah. Do I need to say anything else?

Philippe Coutinho (£7.4m)

I like Villa’s fixtures from an attacking point of view this week. Coutinho’s recent numbers haven’t been the best but he’s still been passing the eye test and we know he does possess the quality to deliver.

Bukayo Saka (£6.5m)

I’ve already outlined Arsenal’s fixture run, and an attacker feels like a sensible move. I’ve opted for Saka. He has the best xGi among all Arsenal players this season.

Dejan Kulusevski (£6.0m)

Kulusevski has two goals and an assist in his previous three league starts, and has cemented his place in Conte’s first team for now. What I like about him is that he’s extremely cheap and allows for significant upgrades in your squad elsewhere. Obviously his stats are not as good as Harry Kane’s or Son Heung-min’s, but you’ve got to remember that he’s only £6.0m so expectations have to be kept realistic.

xGi: 3.3 v 2.4 v 1.4

Spurs have been particularly strong at home from an attacking point of view under Antonio Conte. Since he has taken over, Spurs are averaging approximately three big chances per home game with a very impressive non penalty xG of two per home game. That’s only bettered by Man City and Liverpool in this spell.

Raphinha (£6.5m)

I think Raphinha is a great buy for a Wildcard squad this week. Leeds have a favourable double this week: Norwich in 29 followed by a guaranteed fixture in Gameweek 30. Despite their lack of quality up front, Raphinha remains a good option – even in the game against Spurs, he created six chances and has a healthy xGi of 0.6. He also hit the crossbar from a free kick – with him the quality is always there.

I think the new manager, Jesse Marsch, should suit their style of play. He’s similar to Bielsa in his attacking philosophy. Goals were never a problem for Marsch’s Salzburg and Leipzig teams, with both averaging at least two goals per game during his tenure.

I also like Raphinha’s matchups this week – only Watford have conceded more big chances at home than Leicester this season. They have also conceded the 3^rd highest number of chances on Raphinha’s flank this season.

As far as his other Double Gameweek 28 opponent Villa is concerned, they concede very few chances centrally since Gerrard has taken over. In fact, 77% of their chances conceded have been on the flanks with majority of them being on Raphinha’s flank.

Best FPL Wildcard Team for Gameweek 28 – Forwards

Harry Kane (£12.3m)

Kane v Son (under Conte)

Mins per big chance involvements: 57 v 71
Mins per xGi: 114 v 150

Kane’s goal threat is on another level since Conte has taken over. No one has a better non penalty xGi than him since the Italian has taken over. Not only is he faring better than Son but I think he is the best captaincy option in Gameweek 30 as well, so should definitely be in your plans.

Ollie Watkins (£7.5m)

“I want goals on the pitch, I want my goalscorers on the pitch so I gave them an opportunity as two nines today.”

Gerrard’s plans to utilise both Ings and Watkins are apparent from his post match quotes after the Brighton game. I prefer Watkins to Ings as he is slightly more likely to play 90 minutes and, having broken his goal drought after six successive blanks, he should be more confident heading into this Double Gameweek.

There’s also the fact that Villa’s double this week is favourable and then they have a guaranteed fixture in Gameweek 30, which will help if you don’t plan to Free Hit.

Southampton, despite their recent upturn in attacking performances, are still ranked 18th for big chances conceded in away games, while Leeds have also been conceding big chances for fun. They are also ranked 18th for big chances conceded in home games this season and their new manager, Jesse Marsch, is very similar to Bielsa with his attacking philosophy.

His high pressing system could be defensively susceptible which leaves spaces in behind and could bode well for Villa’s attackers this week.

Armando Broja (£5.5m)

Southampton have scored 20 goals in their previous 10 games and are coming into this double in a rich vein of form. Across the last six matches, they are ranked 5th for xG and 4th for big chances in the league. They play Norwich in Gameweek 29, Leeds in Gameweek 31 and have a favourable Double Gameweek as well, which is why I like the idea of jumping on an attacker:

Broja v Adams (Last five matches started together)

Big chance involvements: 4 v 5
FPL points: 14 v 29

As you can see, there is not much between their underlying numbers despite the recent trend of points. Broja got a goal and assist in the FA cup so should be high on confidence and he allows for a £1m saving. He’d be my pick of the two.
