<h2>Best FPL set-piece takers</h2>
Roughly 10% of Premier League assists come from set-play situations, giving dead-ball specialists an edge when choosing your FPL squad. 
We ranked them by expected assists from set plays (xASP) since the start of last season – quite simply the likelihood that a completed pass from a set play will become a goal assist. 
Injured players like Dwight McNeil (£5.5m) and Michael Olise (£6.0m) were excluded.

<h3>Kieran Trippier (£6.5m)</h3>
<ul>
<li>Set-play expected assists: 6.98</li>
<li>Teams selected by %: 33.0</li>
</ul>
Trippier has more xASP per 90 than any other Premier League regular since the start of last season (0.18). 
He also has more than any other player overall across Europe’s top five leagues since the start of last season, at 6.98.
The England right-back, who is on every set-piece for Newcastle, created 76 chances in the league from set plays last season – over 30 more than the next-best player.

<h3>James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m)</h3>

Ward-Prowse wasn’t on the FPL roster at the start of the season, which explains why he’s only in 0.1% of teams. 
But the free-kick king is back after his move to West Ham from Southampton. Only one man in Premier League history has scored more direct free-kicks than Ward-Prowse’s 17 &#8211; England legend David Beckham is one goal ahead. 
There’s every chance that record could be broken this season, as Ward-Prowse netted three free-kicks last season. Aside from goals, he’s also a creative threat, with 3.12 xASP since the start of last season.
<h3>James Maddison (£7.5m)</h3>

</ul>
Since the start of last season, for Leicester and Tottenham Hotspur, Maddison has scored two goals from direct free-kicks in the Premier League &#8211; only one player netted more.
But Maddison isn’t just a threat with the shot. He has also recorded two assists from set plays since the start of 2022/23, the ninth-best figure in the league &#8211; although the highest was Trippier on four, so he wasn’t too far from the top. 
He looks likely to now be the dead-ball specialist in a Tottenham side who scored 17 set-piece goals last season – the second-most in the Premier League.

<h3>Andreas Pereira (£5.5m)</h3>

<li>Set-play expected assists: 2.3</li>
<li>Teams selected by %: 1.1</li>
</ul>
The cheapest option on the list, Pereira was often used in FPL last season to accommodate more expensive signings, with a starting price of 4.5m. 
But Pereira was in elite FPL form for Fulham, with four goals and 10 assists earning him 123 points and a price increase to 5.5m. 
That increase appears to have put some people off, with only 1.1% of teams selecting Pereira. 
But it’s worth a second look at the man with 2.3 xASP and four assists from set plays since the start of last season, the latter only bettered by two players.
Fulham have some tough fixtures coming up but face Luton in Gameweek 5.

Definitely the premium option at a record-breaking £8.0m for a defender, Alexander-Arnold may not get the clean-sheet points you’d want from a man in your backline but he’s an exceptional attacking outlet. 
Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m) looks set to rival him on set-pieces for Liverpool but Alexander-Arnold has 2.25 xASP since the start of last season and one assist directly from set pieces, as well as one direct free-kick goal. It’s definitely one to ponder.
