<p>In this edition of Breaking the FPL Template, <a href="https://twitter.com/Hibbo_FPL">@Hibbo_FPL</a> examines examines an alternative Spurs captain and high-ceiling punts for Gameweek 38 in Fantasy Premier League.</p>
<p>This article will provide FPL tips to help managers break the template and achieve that desirable Top 10k finish. All data used is courtesy of the <a href="https://fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta?via=hibbo">Hub&#8217;s OPTA Stats tool</a>.</p>

<h2>Kane or Son: Breaking The FPL Template Gameweek 38</h2>
<p>As we approach the Fantasy Premier League season finale our captaincy strategy will depend on proximity to our target ranks. FPL managers satisfied with their current rank will likely seek to play Gameweek 38 with a straight bat.</p>
<p>Hits should be avoided and the current effective-ownership favourite <strong>Heung-min Son (£11.1m)</strong> will be entrusted with the captaincy armband. Son has been a revelation, currently sitting second for goals (21) in the Golden Boot race behind <strong>Mohamed Salah (£13.1m)</strong>.</p>

<p>Son has been red-hot, registering “double-digits” five times in eight gameweeks and recording 13 attacking returns in the process. Since Gameweek 30, Son ranks first for FPL points (96) by some distance over second-placed <strong>Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m)</strong>.</p>
<p>Son has been clinical, notching ten goals and providing three assists, doubling his expected goal involvement (6.10) for the period. Son has produced his best output at home with 20 of his 31 attacking returns arriving at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.</p>
<p>Flat-track bully Son will relish the trip to Norwich, having registered 74% of his attacking returns (23) against non-top six sides. Notably, Norwich rank worst for minutes per expected goals (43.8) and worst for expected goals conceded (80.57) this season.</p>
<p>Furthermore, Norwich ranks worst for both crosses conceded (400) and chances conceded (151) from their right flank this season. They also rank third-worst this season for set-piece attempts conceded (161) which aligns with Son’s dominance over corner kicks.</p>
<p>The recommended play for FPL managers close to top10k success is to own both Kane and Son – and back the South Korean with the armband. Those FPL managers in need of a “hail-mary” to achieve overall or mini-league success should captain <strong>Harry Kane (£12.4m)</strong>.</p>
<p>A comparison of Spurs’ talismanic duo since Son’s Gameweek 30 purple-patch shows that Kane has demonstrated strong <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/">underlying numbers</a>. Kane betters Son for penalty-area touches (43 v 32), goal attempts (35 v 21), and expected goals (5.24 v 4.97).</p>
<p>The Golden Boot narrative suggests that Kane could pass penalty duty to Son but expect the English man to put team circumstances before personal glory.</p>

<h2>Mason Mount: Breaking The FPL Template Gameweek 38</h2>
<p>The abject form of Watford brings Chelsea assets to the fore before their final home game of the season. The Hornets are winless in their last eight, shipping 20 goals in a run which included attacking powerhouses Manchester City and Liverpool.</p>
<p>In attack, Watford ranks worst for shots on target (13) and joint-third for big chances (7) over the last six. Defensively, the Hornets rank worst for shots in the box conceded (72) and set-piece attempts conceded (31) over the period.</p>
<p>In terms of zonal weakness, Watford ranks second-worst for crosses conceded (77) and chances conceded (32) from their left flank. <strong>Mason Mount (£7.7m)</strong> has enjoyed his best Premier League season reaching double-digits for both goals (11) and assists (11).</p>
<p>The majority of Mount’s points have arrived in bursts with 56% of his FPL points (94) coming from six games. Notably, Mount ranks fourth among midfielders for total attacking returns (19) against non-top six opposition this season.</p>
<p>Over the last six, Mounts ranks among midfielders second for shots (20) and seventh for penalty area touches (35). Furthermore, Mount ranks first among midfielders for final third passes (143) and third for chances created (16) over the period.</p>
<p>Mount boasts a significant set-piece threat and even share of corners (17) which aligns with the dead-ball weakness of the Hornets. Freshly rested against Leicester City, Mason Mount firmly enters the thoughts of FPL managers ahead of the season finale.</p>

<h2>Christian Eriksen: Breaking The FPL Template Gameweek 38</h2>
<p>The return of <strong>Christian Eriksen (£5.6m)</strong> to competitive football has been a fairy-tale story after suffering cardiac arrest against Finland at UEFA Euro 2020. The Dane has defied the medical odds and understandable fitness concerns to produce his vintage best for Brentford.</p>
<p>Over the last six, Eriksen ranks among midfielders second for chances created (20) and second for big chances (4) over the last six. Furthermore, the Danish maestro ranks first among midfielders for crosses (58) and successful crosses (21) over the period.</p>
<p>Eriksen is a powerful force from set pieces ranking first among midfielders for set-piece attempts (7), corners taken (35), and successful corners (10). In the season finale, Thomas Franck’s high-flying Brentford host a Leeds side fighting for Premier League survival.</p>
<p>Leeds are in dire form of late recording just one league win in their last six matches during a difficult run which included Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City. Defensively, Leeds ranked second-worst for shots in the box conceded (69) and third-worst for big chances conceded (15).</p>
<p>Furthermore, Leeds ranked fourth-worst in the division over the last six for minutes per expected goals conceded (46.0).</p>

<h2>Conclusion: Breaking The FPL Template Gameweek 38</h2>
<p>As a long season draws to close FPL managers have one last opportunity to roll their final dice to attempt to achieve their season goals. To reiterate: if you are close to your season target then play conservatively with a straight bat.</p>
<p><strong>Heung-min Son</strong> will be a hugely popular captaincy choice for a very good reason but his popularity creates an opportunity for the chasing pack. In the FPL community we talk about the “wisdom of the crowd” and while the crowd is and has been extremely wise &#8211; one-week variance is huge.</p>
<p>My recommended play for chasers is to stay within the Spurs fixture and captain Harry Kane.  A freshly rested Mason Mount has a fantastic high-ceiling fixture and previous of producing ridiculous returns this season.</p>
<p>An aggressive recommended points hit for me would be Mason Mount and Harry Kane against abject opposition. Christian Eriksen represents a left-field pick with fantastic recent production against a Leeds side that has been poor defensively.</p>
<p>Finally, I would like to thank those that have read my articles and whom I have interacted with this season – I sincerely hope some of the analysis has benefitted your season. On a personal level, as we approach the finale I sit 2,227 overall going into Gameweek 38 and I am gunning for a personal best overall rank and my third top 10k finish.</p>
