<h2>Riccardo Calafiori: History and best positions</h2>
<p>Calafiori began his senior career at Roma, where he had spent the majority of his time as a youth player.</p>
<p>His footballing story was nearly a very short one, given he suffered a serious knee injury as a 16-year-old which nearly ended his career.</p>
<p>It occurred in 2018 while playing for Roma Under-19s and he tore every ligament in his left knee.</p>
<p>But Calafiori battled back and made his senior debut in 2020. He went on to make 18 appearances for the Serie A team before a short loan at Genoa and then a permanent transfer to FC Basel.</p>
<p>He played 38 games for the Swiss side, where he was switched from a left-back to a centre-back.</p>
<p>The Italian moved back to his homeland in the 2023/24 season, playing 30 Serie A games for Bologna and helping them secure a Champions League spot.</p>
<p>As highlighted in our <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-transfer-hub">Transfer Hub</a> guide, Bologna kept 15 clean sheets while Calafiori was on the pitch. He played mostly as a centre-back in this time.</p>

<h3>Passing prowess</h3>
<p>Arsenal have got themselves a defender who is very comfortable on the ball.</p>
<p>His pass completion rate of 89.8% was <a href="https://www.arsenal.com/news/15-facts-you-need-know-about-riccardo-calafiori#:~:text=In%20October%202018%2C%20while%20playing,putting%20his%20future%20in%20doubt.">third best in Serie A</a> and he created 17 chances for his teammates. No centre-back in Europe's top five leagues managed more than his five assists last season.</p>
<p>Calafiori's assisting abilities were on show in Euro 2024, when he drove forward and provided the pass for Italy's late goal against Croatia, which saw them qualify for the knockout stage.</p>
