            <p>This season I’m going to write a few more article around the Sky Fantasy Football game - these are mainly going to be some observations from an analytical view point that aid my thought process.</p>

<h2><strong>Team goals and clean sheets</strong></h2>
<p>Before I look at any players or prices, it’s useful to have an idea of how many goals and clean sheets each team will generate.</p>
<p>Based on information from FiveThirtyEight and spread betting companies, I estimate the following to the first overhaul.</p>
<p>G = goals and CS = clean sheets.</p>

<p>There is nothing in the order of teams that jumps out and says 'I never expected a team to be this high (or low)' but I think Newcastle will be in the top half.</p>
<p>It is worth noting how many more goals and clean sheets the top-two teams achieve compared to the mid-table teams.</p>
<h2><strong>Past player performance</strong></h2>
<p>To have an idea of good-value players, I produce a top 10 point-scorers (what they scored last season) for each position with a key statistic of points per million per game played.</p>
<p>In previous seasons, I set a gold standard of 0.7 pts/£/g and highlighted players in yellow who achieved this standard.</p>
<p>Please note that these are points scored last season and not adjusted for positional changes or changes to the scoring system with man of the match being removed.</p>

<p>The top-seven goalkeeper point scorers all reached the gold standard and most of the top point-scoring defenders also reached this benchmark.</p>
<p>Only <b>Mohamed Salah (£11.7m) </b>reached this mark from the attacking players.</p>
<p>I also look at the positions with the top 10 based on highest pts/£/g, which may highlight cheap value players or players that missed a large part of the season due to injury or being bought in January.</p>
<p>You need to use your football knowledge when looking at these players, as some score well but are only likely to play limited minutes.</p>
<p>For example <strong>Nathan Ake (£8.0m)</strong> scores well when he played for Manchester City but most of the time he didn’t play, so shouldn’t come into your thinking for a season-long selection.</p>

<p>Three players who jump out at me from these tables are <strong>David Raya (£6.7m)</strong> the Brentford goalkeeper, who missed a large amount of time injured last season and looks great value.</p>
<p><strong>Bruno Guimaraes (£8.3m)</strong>, who Newcastle bought in January, hit the ground running last season and is fourth on this metric.</p>
<p>The third name is <strong>Rodri (£9.1m)</strong> who is just under the gold standard but second on this metric and relatively cheap compared to other midfielders.</p>
<h2><strong>Best formation</strong></h2>
<p>Based on last year’s points, I plot the average number of  points versus value for each player by position and produce a line that best represents the trend of the data.</p>
<p>The lines for each position are shown in the graph below:</p>

<p>After around £7m, the red line (representing defenders) is above the lines for both midfielders and strikers, suggesting it is better to have five defenders.</p>
<p>Also, the red line is steeper than the other lines, suggesting it is better to have five expensive defenders rather than five cheap ones.</p>
<p>The green line (midfielders) is higher and steeper than strikers, so any remaining budget should be invested in midfield rather than strikers.</p>
<p>This is just a guide to a good formation. If you find a mispriced player then you should adjust accordingly.</p>
