<p><i>In this team preview series, Dan reviews all 24 teams participating in Euro 2020 and details their route from qualification, expected lineups, best player picks, under the radar gems and players to avoid.</i></p>

<h2>Route from qualification:</h2>
<p>Scotland were given a lifeline after winning their third tier Nations League group to enter the play-off stage. In the actual qualifying phase Scotland finished third, which sounds decent although they were closer to second from bottom of their six team group than the top two.</p>
<p>Of their 10 games, they won half and lost the other half, losing all four encounters against qualified teams Russia and Belgium. Across those four games, they conceded 12, only scoring once &#8211; that is a worrying record.</p>
<p>Furthermore, over the course of their 10 matches, they conceded 19. That&#8217;s a record that wouldn&#8217;t have stood out even against the teams that failed to qualify.</p>
<p>In the play-off stage, Scotland edged past Israel via a penalty shootout after a goalless encounter to set up a final away against Serbia. Once again, they inched to victory via a penalty shootout after a one-all draw.</p>
<p>Surrounding their important play-offs was a second-tier Nations League campaign which they finished second in. They had to overcome Israel and Slovakia to take that spot, but were beaten to top-spot by Czech Republic (despite beating them twice).</p>
<p>This year, the Tartan Army started off with a 2-2 home draw to fellow qualifiers Austria. They then followed it up with a 1-1 draw in Israel before a comfortable 4-0 win at the expense of minnows Faroe Islands.</p>
<p>Interestingly, in 2020, Scotland&#8217;s matches averaged just 1.4 goals per game, with only one of their 10 encounters featuring more than two goals.</p>
<p>In conclusion, Scotland are quite a difficult to team to judge. Their qualifying spell was miserable from a defensive point-of-view but it appears they&#8217;ve improved that part of their game since.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the period since hasn&#8217;t involved a proper test for the Scots, so whether they will be able to hold their own against tougher sides such as England and Croatia remains an uncertainty.</p>
<p>I personally am not convinced, and think they face a very tough task to reach the Last-16. They should however, score a few.</p>

<h2>Euro 2020 Scotland expected lineup</h2>

<p>The majority of the line-up is set-in-stone.</p>
<p>The main uncertainty is <strong>Jack Hendry</strong>&#8216;s spot, which could be <strong>Liam Cooper</strong> or <strong>Declan Gallagher&#8217;s</strong>.</p>
<p>Elsewhere, <strong>Lyndon Dykes</strong> could start up top with <strong>Che Adams</strong>, replacing either <strong>Ryan Christie or Callum McGregor</strong>.</p>

<h2><strong>Euro 2020 best player picks:</strong></h2>
<p>Highly-rated box-to-box midfielder <strong>John McGinn </strong>was sensational in qualifying; he scored 7 in just 8 appearances, no other Scottish player scored more than one. Since qualifying, he has only scored three times, but all three came in the last international break. He loves a long-shot and is involved much more in the penalty area than he is for club-side Aston Villa.</p>

<h2><strong>Under the radar players:</strong></h2>
<p>Southampton forward <strong>Che Adams</strong> only declared himself to the national team in March, so only has three caps. However, he started impressively with a goal and assist in his only two starts. Furthermore, he racked up nine goals and five assists in a decent Premier League campaign.</p>
<p>Celtic&#8217;s<strong> Ryan Christie</strong> should start just behind <strong>Che Adams</strong> so offers some promising goal threat. Importantly, he is their designated penalty-taker, has 10 assists this season in the Scottish first division and four goals and three assists in his last 10 caps. Moreover, he should get a share of set-pieces.</p>
<p>The two left-backs, <strong>Kieran Tierney</strong> and <strong>Andy Robertson</strong>, are among the best in Europe, particularly going forward.</p>
<p><strong>Robertson</strong> will take left-footed indirect set-pieces and plays in an attacking wing-back role. Meanwhile, <strong>Tierney</strong> plays in the back three but that doesn&#8217;t stop him getting forward whatsoever. This was particularly highlighted by his hat-trick of assists in the most recent World Cup qualifier vs Faroe Islands.</p>
<p>Somehow, Robertson only has one assist in 43 caps, but has scored three times. Despite that stat, I would still argue he is the Scot&#8217;s main chance creator.</p>
<p>However, clean sheets are very unlikely given their tough group. Scotland have kept six clean sheets in their last 21 matches; they came against Faroe Islands, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Israel and San Marino twice. Only two of those actually qualified for the tournament, and on those two occasions Scotland faced 25 shots &#8211; not exactly water-tight.</p>

<h2><strong>Players to avoid:</strong></h2>
<p>Expected right-wing back <strong>Stephen O&#8217;Donnell</strong> plays in an advanced position, but like I said, I can&#8217;t see any clean sheets. Neither <strong>Jack Hendry</strong> or<strong> Grant Hanley</strong> offer enough attacking threat to go with their pretty poor clean sheet chances.</p>
<p><strong>David Marshall</strong> is a slightly better option than the three options mentioned above (for save points), although I don&#8217;t recommend getting a goalkeeper with little clean sheet chance.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t see Southampton&#8217;s attacking midfielder <strong>Stuart Armstrong </strong>and Celtic&#8217;s <strong>Callum McGregor</strong> starting all three group matches, so they are not options in my book.</p>
<p>Finally, Manchester United&#8217;s <strong>Scott McTominay</strong> doesn&#8217;t have the attacking outlet to be a genuine Fantasy option.</p>
