<p class="western">Arsenal&#8217;s new £34m signing Fabio Viera has been compared to the likes of <strong>Bruno Fernandes</strong> &#8211; but will the Gunners&#8217; new Portuguese star recreate his countryman&#8217;s explosive introduction to the Premier League?</p>
<p>We explore the 22-year-old attacking midfielder&#8217;s FPL prospects in this piece, together with his fantasy appeal in other formats, including Sky Sports Fantasy Football, Telegraph Fantasy Football (TFF) and Sun Dream Team.</p>

<h2>Fabio Viera &#8211; the player</h2>
<p>Viera joins Arsenal from FC Porto, where he has spent his entire youth and senior career &#8211; apart from a single spell on loan at Padroense FC&#8217;s Under-17s side in 2015/16.</p>
<p>He made his first appearance for Porto B in 2019 before his full-team debut a year later.</p>
<p>Through 54 senior appearances, he played a part in Porto&#8217;s two Primeira Liga titles in 2019/20 and 21/22.</p>
<p>In the 2021/22 season, he made a total of 27 appearances, 15 as a starter, scoring six goals and registering 14 assists.</p>
<p>On the international stage, Viera has yet to experience senior action for Portugal, however he has shown signs of promise in his country&#8217;s youth teams. In 21 appearances for the under-21s, he has netted 13 times.</p>
<p>He was named UEFA European Under-21 Championship Player of the Tournament last June, having played a key role in Portugal&#8217;s run to the final.</p>
<p>The tournament saw him get the better of his new teammates <strong>Emile Smith Rowe</strong> and <strong>Eddie Nketiah</strong> as Portugal saw off England in the group stages.</p>

<h2>Fabio Viera &#8211; one of Portugal&#8217;s &#8216;most promising&#8217; talents</h2>
<p>In last season&#8217;s six-goal campaign, Viera played in a variety of roles across attacking midfield areas, as well as playing up front alongside a strike partner.</p>
<p>Highlighting his versatility, Portuguese journalist Tom Kundert<strong>,</strong> of Portugoal.net, told <a href="https://www.arsenal.com/news/fabio-vieira-joins-long-term-contract">Arsenal.com</a>: “He’s left-footed but he tends to play to on the right – last season at least – he cuts in and shoots or picks out one of his fantastic passes with his left foot.</p>
<p>&#8220;He’s a bit of an all-rounder, but definitely more of an attacking midfielder than a defensive one. He can play number 10 as well.”</p>
<p>It was Kundert who made the comparison to countryman Fernandes.</p>
<p>He said: “Without a doubt he’s one of Portugal’s most promising, up and coming talents. He’s very stylish, an extremely smooth operator.</p>
<p>&#8220;In terms of players currently in the Premier League, I’d say he’s similar in style to Bruno Fernandes. Even his physique is similar in a way.</p>
<p>“He’s a really, really potent attacking weapon. For me the thing that makes him stand out as a star is his vision.</p>
<p>&#8220;He is a fantastic passer. He’s one of those players who can spot a pass and you think ‘My god. I didn’t even see that from up in the stands. How did he manage to pick that out?!’</p>
<p>&#8220;He’s really incisive in the final third, and he’s got goals in him as well.&#8221;</p>
<h2>Fabio Viera &#8211; FPL prospects?</h2>

<p>The youngster comes off the back of a season where he was used both as a starter and from the bench.</p>
<p>With plenty of competition in his new side&#8217;s attacking midfield slots, it remains to be seen how &#8211; and where &#8211; he will be deployed.</p>
<p>In a Q&amp;A with his new club, Viera says he sees himself as &#8216;quite similar&#8217; to number eight <strong>Martin Odegaard</strong>.</p>
<p>Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta&#8217;s initial comments offer no real clues as to where he will play, only hinting at Viera&#8217;s &#8216;versatility&#8217;.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am very excited that we have identified and signed such a special talent,&#8221; he told Arsenal&#8217;s website.</p>
<p>&#8220;Fabio is a very creative player that will bring high quality and versatility to our attacking play.&#8221;</p>
<p>Arsenal face a busier schedule in 2022/23, courtesy of a Europa League campaign on top of domestic duties.</p>
<p>Rotation is perhaps inevitable and FPL managers may be inclined to play the waiting game and see how Viera is integrated into Arteta&#8217;s team.</p>
<h2><strong>Fabio Viera &#8211; Sky, Sun and TFF prospects?</strong></h2>
<p>Goals and assists are on the radar of fantasy managers, regardless of the format.</p>
<p>But in Sky, bonus points are awarded for passing, tackles and shots, while TFF also awards tackle points.</p>
<p>Dream Team uses WhoScored player ratings and awards three points for those who rate seven and above.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.whoscored.com/Players/394924/Sho">WhoScored&#8217;s</a> page for Viera show his headline Primeira Liga <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> as 0.9 tackles, 1.3 key passes, 26 passes at 82.9% accuracy and 1.6 shots per game.</p>
<p>Bear in mind however that these <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> are effectively skewed by the amount of substitute appearances Viera made last season.</p>
<p>Using &#8216;per 90 minutes&#8217; as a metric, we get a more representative set of numbers: 1.3 tackles; 2.3 key passes; 47 attempted passes; and 3.1 shots per game.</p>
<p>His average WhoScored rating was 7.17.</p>
<p>Sky managers might look at shots bonus as the one with most potential from Viera but caution should be adopted. The likelihood of bonus will depend on minutes played, while the majority of Viera&#8217;s shots &#8211; around two per game &#8211; came from outside the box.</p>
<p>Odegaard hit shots and passing bonus three and four times respectively last season, so perhaps a smattering of bonus points can be anticipated if Viera adapts well to the Premier League and gets plenty of minutes under his belt.</p>
