<p>What is the new FPL Assistant Manager chip and when is the best time to play it?</p>

<h2>FPL Assistant Manager chip: The basics</h2>
<p>Don&#8217;t be fooled by the name &#8211; the Assistant Manager chip is all about the performance of the team, not the manager.</p>
<p>If your chosen manager gets sent off, it won&#8217;t affect your points. What matters is how the team performs over three successive gameweeks.</p>
<p>To get started, you simply need to click &#8216;Play Chip&#8217; on the pick page where the Assistant Manager icon is displayed. A new slot will appear, allowing you to choose any available manager within your budget &#8211; they cost between £0.5m and £1.5m and their price will not change.</p>

<p>Proceed with caution, as once you&#8217;ve confirmed your manager choice and saved your team, there&#8217;s no going back.</p>
<p>Although this first selection won&#8217;t use up any of your free transfers, subsequent changes will. A few people have already been caught out by this while experimenting.</p>
<p>The three-player per team maximum rule extends to the Assistant Manager. If you&#8217;re tripled up on Liverpool players for example, you can&#8217;t select Arne Slot without removing one of them.</p>
<p>The Assistant Manager chip can only be used once per season and cannot be played in combination with other chips. The fact it lasts for three gameweeks means you need to plan out your chip strategy carefully.</p>

<h3>Scoring potential</h3>
<p>Once you&#8217;ve selected your manager, it’s important to understand the scoring potential this chip offers.</p>
<p>The scoring matrix below shows how points are awarded.</p>
<p>For example, if Liverpool beat Southampton 3-0, Slot would earn you 11 points.</p>
<p>They earn extra points when they win or draw against a team that is five or more places above them in the league at the start of the gameweek.</p>
<p>If the manager qualifies for the table bonus at the start of the Gameweek, they will remain eligible, even if league positions change during the gameweek.</p>
<p>And don&#8217;t worry, if your manager gets a red card, this will not affect your points.</p>

<h2>Best times to play the FPL Assistant Manager chip: Top tips</h2>
<p>Many analysts have explored the potential of this chip and I’ve summarised the key findings for you below.</p>
<p>For years, we&#8217;ve used the same chips and their strategies have become familiar to us but this new addition is a game-changer.</p>
<p>It’s the most powerful chip we’ve ever had, with the potential to propel you straight to the top of your mini-leagues.</p>
<p>If your rank isn&#8217;t where you&#8217;d like it to be, consider this chip your lightning bolt in Mario Kart &#8211; a fast-track to success.</p>
<h3><strong>Use it during a double gameweek</strong></h3>
<p>This chip is most powerful when used during a double gameweek &#8211; where certain teams play twice &#8211; as it allows you to maximise value by getting four fixtures instead of three.</p>
<p>Double Gameweek 24 was the first such week, with Liverpool and Everton playing twice, while the Reds double again in Double Gameweek 25 alongside Aston Villa.</p>

<p>The announcement of a Double Gameweek 32 was a surprise on Friday, February 14. It offers another chance to use it with two doubles in three gameweeks, like those using it between Gameweek 24 and 26 had.</p>
<p>In order to maximise the Assistant Manager chip with a double gameweek, it could be used in one of the following windows:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Gameweek 24-26 (ongoing)</strong></li>
<li><strong>Gameweek 25-27</strong></li>
<li><strong>Gameweek 30-32</strong></li>
<li><strong>Gameweek 31-33</strong></li>
<li><strong>Gameweek 36-38</strong></li>
</ul>
<h3><strong>Be open to using a transfer on a manager</strong></h3>
<p>It’s unlikely you will get the dream run of three strong gameweeks for a single team and in order to maximise the value of the chip, you may have to use a free transfer or two to target different teams.</p>
<h3><strong>High floor or high ceiling?</strong></h3>
<p>The way you use your Assistant Manager chip depends on your risk appetite.</p>
<p>Choosing a strong team with easier fixtures that are likely to result in comfortable wins is the safest.</p>
<p>But if you select a team with a tough run of matches against opponents at least five places above them at the start of the gameweek, you could potentially earn more points thanks to the table bonus rewards.</p>
<p>Clearly though, this strategy comes with greater risk and combining the two approaches could offer the best of both worlds.</p>
<p>For a double gameweek, a relatively safe strategy should yield around 32 points, while a high-risk strategy could give you up to 48 points &#8211; but it could also be much lower depending on the results. The variance is high with the riskier option.</p>
<p>To reduce the risk of high variance, consider playing it safe with the Assistant Manager chip while using a transfer to take a one-week punt on a manager with potential for the table bonus. This strategy balances safety with the chance for a higher reward.</p>

<h3><strong>Use the gameweek odds in your favour</strong></h3>
<p>For a strong team, look for matches where the win odds are heavily in your favour (70%+), such as Liverpool playing against a relegated team.</p>
<p>For a table bonus team, focus on matches where the win odds are more balanced (around 30%+ in favour of your team), such as Spurs v Brighton.</p>
<h2>Key things to bear in mind before using the FPL Assistant Manager chip</h2>
<h3><strong>Blank gameweeks</strong></h3>
<p>These occur when certain teams don’t have fixtures. We expect these in Gameweek 29 and 34 this season.</p>
<p>You might need your Free hit chip to get through one of these. If your Assistant Manager chip is active, you won&#8217;t be able to do so.</p>
<p>This is why the windows above look to be the three best ways to use them with a double gameweek included, as they steer away from the blanks.</p>
<h3><strong>Table changes</strong></h3>
<p>Planning to use the chip at a specific point in the future carries some risk, as the league standings are constantly shifting.</p>
<p>What might have been a strong candidate for the table bonus at the time of planning could vanish as teams move up or down the table.</p>
<h3><strong>Cash and transfers</strong></h3>
<p>You’ll need enough cash in the bank to use the chip and free transfers available to switch managers without taking a points hit, as that would reduce the value of the chip.</p>
<h3><strong>Form and end-of-season factors</strong></h3>
<p>At the end of the season, some teams go on a hot streak, while others seem to have mentally checked out.</p>
<p>It’s easier to predict outcomes during this period, especially for teams fighting for survival or top positions.</p>
<p>This may make the Gameweek 36-38 window particularly attractive for risk takers. Teams at the bottom will be scrapping for points, while those above them may not have anything to play for. This could be a good way to earn table bonus, although of course nothing is ever guaranteed.</p>
