In his FPL Double Gameweek 36 review, Fantasy Premier League author David Wardale reports on the season’s biggest batch of double fixtures.

The north London derby rounded it all off and it proved a profitable match for those with key Spurs assets.

Wednesday was busy, Chelsea starting it off with an easy win over ten-man (again) Leeds before Man City ran riot at Wolves. Leicester saw off Norwich and Watford and Everton drew 0-0 in the other two matches.

Liverpool won on Tuesday, and they did it (for the most part) without Mo Salah on the pitch.

Sunday’s four matches started with a narrow win for Arsenal against ten-man Leeds, a huge win for Everton at Leicester and a thumping from West Ham for a sorry Norwich.

The late kick-off went emphatically Man City’s way.

A packed Saturday started at the old school time of 3pm, with four matches.

They included Chelsea throwing away a chunky lead against previously beach-bound Wolves, while Aston Villa beat Burnley, Brentford slapped sorry Southampton and Crystal Palace relegated Watford.

The tea-time slot involved Brighton feasting on Man United before Liverpool and Spurs clashed in the evening kick-off.

FPL Double Gameweek 36 Review – Thursday

Tottenham Hotspur 3 Arsenal 0

The usual Spurs suspects shone brightly as Tottenham romped to a one-sided north London derby victory.

Arsenal played 60 or so minutes with ten men after Rob Holding (£4.1m) was given a second yellow for the last (and worst) of a series of fouls on Heung-Min Son (£11.0m).

But Spurs were already ahead by then, Harry Kane (£12.4m) scoring from the spot after Son was bundled over in the area, and were well worth their win irrespective of the Gunners’ personnel issues.

Kane doubled the lead before half-time when he stooped to nod in Rodrigo Bentancur’s (£4.9m) free header from a corner.

And Son sealed the deal straight after the interval to make it a third consecutive haul for the midfielder.

Incredibly, of Son’s last six returns, five of them have been double-digit ones.

He was subbed off just after 70 minutes with 20 points to his name from Double Gameweek 36 – particularly impressive considering the calibre of the opposition.

Kane has had to play second fiddle during Son’s purplest of patches, but he recorded his third double-figure total from his last five returns, and 15 from the double, which is none too shabby either.

Arsenal started brightly and faded badly.

Their two most bought players for the double, Eddie Nketiah (£5.6m) and Bukayo Saka (£6.7m) blanked, with the former living off scraps both before and after Holding’s dismissal.

And the 17.5% on Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) endured yet another shrug-inducing tally – the keeper hasn’t kept a clean sheet for nine matches now.

Spurs have been tighter – this was their third shut-out in six games – and fixtures against Burnley and Norwich strongly suggest more of the same.

If, as seems highly likely, their fight with Arsenal for a Champions League spot goes down to the final match, that Norwich fixture looks especially ripe for fantasy exploitation.

Arsenal still have control of their Euro fate – wins at Newcastle and home to Everton will be enough.

The 12.8% who own Ben White (£4.6m) will be confident their man finally gets back onto the pitch for those vital matches, even though Gunners boss Mikel Arteta declined to use him at Spurs despite Holding’s sending off.

The problem now is that Gabriel (£5.4m) went off after 75 minutes with what could have been a hamstring problem.

Should he be sidelined, White will have a new (and far from first-choice) partner at the heart of an increasingly fragile defence.

Then again, we’ll not be buying Arsenal defenders now anyway.

FPL Double Gameweek 36 Review – Wednesday

Leeds United 0 Chelsea 3

Chelsea all but nailed their Champions League place for next season with a win over a Leeds side starting to look dangerously like a relegated one.

For the second match running, Jesse Marsch’s team were reduced to ten men early on.

Dan James (£6.0m) was the latest offender. He flew into a challenge on Mateo Kovacic (£4.9m) 24 minutes in, taking the ball and then most of the midfielder’s lower leg.

The Chelsea man was soon subbed off, replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.4m).

The visitors were already one up by then anyway as the returning Mason Mount (£7.7m) had curled home a Reece James (£6.4m) pass after just four minutes.

But any hopes of a meaningful contest were snuffed out by (Dan) James’ recklessness.

The other James ended up with a clean sheet and maximum bonus for a sixth double-figure return of a campaign almost entirely made up of feast or famine totals.

Mount’s 22.1% ownership were also inducted into the double-digit club as their man set up Christian Pulisic (£7.9m) for Chelsea’s second goal. The England international earned two bonus for a 13-pointer all in.

The scoring on the night was wrapped up by an increasingly hungry and in-form Romelu Lukaku (£11.4m), from substitute Hakim Ziyech’s (£7.3m) assist.

The Belgian scored three goals and brought in 19 points from a very productive Double Gameweek 36.

His premium price might put off late, late investment in him.

But the owners of Kai Havertz (£7.9m) and Timo Werner (£8.6m), who were both benched at Elland Road, might be wise to consider moving them on as it would be a surprise if Lukaku doesn’t start the last two league matches now.

Then again, you never know with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

For instance, reports of the death of Marcos Alonso’s (£5.7m) relationship with him seem to have been exaggerated, seeing as the wing-back played the full 90 at Leeds.

The home side were utterly neutered by the sending-off and their injury issues also mounted, just to add further woe to an awful night.

The 11.8%-owned Raphinha (£6.3m) went off with what looked like a hamstring problem, although a fourth consecutive blank would most likely have prompted sales anyway.

They have two games left to save their season.

Not many fantasy managers will be along for that particular ride.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 Manchester City 5

Molineux was bathed in a warm ginger glow as Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) scored four times in a Man City rout.

The midfielder hit a first-half hat-trick, scored one more after the break and even had time to hit the post late on as he produced a 24-pointer for his 11.5% ownership.

De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m) were the only two City players in the top 15 for Gameweek 36 transfers-in.

For the Wolves encounter, the contrast between the pair couldn’t have been more extreme as Jesus played no part at all.

He finished the double with just two points, De Bruyne with 30.

The other City scorer on the night was Raheem Sterling (£10.5m), who (with bonus due) amassed 28 points from the double.

Assists came from Sterling, the returning Bernardo Silva (£7.0m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.2m).

Wolves were rather more lively than recent results might have suggested and they even had the nerve to equalise, Leander Dendoncker (£4.6m) finishing from a Pedro Neto (£6.2m) assist, before City ran riot.

Their defensive stability is but a distant memory, however, and even a home match with Norwich on Sunday is unlikely to inspire investment.

City are off to West Ham – for Mark Noble’s final home match.

That will, no doubt, be bubbly and blubby in equal measure.

But emotion will count for little with City and De Bruyne in this kind of form.

The worry is that Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) might not be fit for that match – he went off with an injury to leave the side with little to no cover at centre-half now.

Leicester City 3 Norwich City 0

Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) scored twice against Norwich to remind fantasy managers of his pedigree ahead of Leicester’s second double in a row.

The striker’s campaign has been wrecked by injury, but he could well view a late-season scoring spree as a very pleasant distraction from a certain shenanigans currently occurring in the High Court.

The Foxes will play Watford and Chelsea, both away, in Gameweek 37.

Vardy warmed up for that with a 13-pointer and, perhaps more pertinently, he was joined on the score sheet by James Maddison (£6.9m).

The 13.8%-owned midfielder played the full 90 minutes against Norwich after missing out completely over the previous two matches.

With no European final to distract Leicester, both Maddison and Vardy should feature heavily for the rest of the run-in.

Harvey Barnes (£6.5m) could be another worth a look – the midfielder provided two assists against the Canaries.

Okay, it was only Norwich, but the Foxes kept a second clean sheet in four matches to boost the appeal of their defenders as well.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has rotated his back line a lot in recent weeks, although Timothy Castagne (£5.3m), who earned two bonus points on the night, has now started five straight games.

Watford 0 Everton 0

A goalless draw did wonders for Everton’s survival hopes, but rather less for most fantasy managers’ points tallies.

Richarlison (£7.5m), with 9.6% ownership, was the Toffees’ most popular player on display.

He blanked for only the third time in eight matches.

His Watford counterpart, the 28.3%-owned Emmanuel Dennis (£5.9m), didn’t even play – one of ten regulars missing through injury or illness.

Not that FPL bosses are overly bothered about Hornets assets now.

Consistent fantasy scorers from Everton remain elusive. Bar, that is, Jordan Pickford (£4.8m).

The keeper’s clean sheet made it 12 points from the double gameweek – and 22 across the last three starts – for him.

With another double up next, both at Goodison Park, tapping into Pickford’s points potential might be dull, but it could also be rewarding.

FPL Double Gameweek 36 Review – Tuesday

Aston Villa 1 Liverpool 2

Liverpool survived an early Aston Villa onslaught to win an entertaining encounter lacking one vital fantasy ingredient – Mo Salah (£13.3m).

The 58.6%-owned midfielder was benched for the second match of a double gameweek from which he emerged with just three points.

A blank against Spurs was followed by an 18-minute repeat at Villa Park.

That was bad for most of us, dreadful for the 3.3 million who gave him the armband and an absolute disaster for the 186,000 who triple captained him.

With an FA Cup final to prepare for at the weekend, it was no surprise Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made changes, however.

Another to be rotated was Andy Robertson (£7.3m). His 11.6% ownership got nothing from their man as he didn’t even make the squad for the Villa clash.

The home side took the lead after only three minutes, courtesy of a Douglas Luiz (£4.3m) header.

That advantage lasted just three minutes more when Joel Matip (£5.2m) steered home from a Virgil van Dijk (£6.8m) assist.

That combination provided some returns across what was otherwise a disappointing double for Reds defenders.

The 38.6%-owned Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m) brought in just four points. Van Dijk managed eight and Matip, despite playing only the second match, produced 11.

The early goals were part of a mad first 12 minutes in which the sides had five shots on goal between them – more than some teams manage all game.

Things finally settled down after that and Liverpool began to exert control.

But such was Villa’s competitiveness on the night, when Sadio Mane (£11.8m) expertly headed in a cross from Luis Diaz (£8.0m) for the winner, it came as something of a surprise.

Steven Gerrard’s side have another double in Gameweek 37 and it involves home matches with Crystal Palace and Burnley.

If they play with the same intensity that they showed against Liverpool, there are fantasy points to be had – especially from their key attackers.

So, a brief eye test for those fixtures:

Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) was lively, although he was starting to fade before he went off with what looked like the mildest of knocks.

Danny Ings (£7.7m), who’d scored in the two previous matches, was involved throughout, although his touch let him down at crucial moments.

Philippe Coutinho (£7.1m) was underwhelming.

Emiliano Buendia (£6.1m) was unlucky to be benched after his 14-pointer at Burnley.

Owned by just 1.1%, he could be an interesting differential if Gerrard starts him against Palace on Sunday.

FPL Double Gameweek 36 Review – Sunday

Manchester City 5 Newcastle United 0

A convincing win sent Man City back to the top of the table and helped to correct what had been shaping up to be a shocking start to Double Gameweek 36 for many managers.

Having said that, the two home players who figured in the top 15 for transfers-in didn’t exactly go big against Newcastle.

DHW 36’s second most bought star, Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m), blanked, while Kevin De Bruyne’s (£11.9m) 115,000+ new owners had to make do with just an assist from the Belgian.

The midfielder was massively influential, producing a match-leading six key passes, but a late flurry of goals pushed him down the bonus point standings.

The big fantasy hauler on the day was Raheem Sterling (£10.5m), who scored City’s first and last goals, earned maximum bonus and brought in 16 points.

Pity those who got rid of him – he suffered 15,942 net sales despite the double.

Even if Sterling doesn’t feature at all in Wednesday’s trip to Wolves, that’s still a lot of points to miss out on with so few matches remaining.

City were two-up by half-time after Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) bundled home from a Martin Dubravka (£4.4m) error.

Ruben Dias (£6.2m) earned the assist for that goal – his second straight attacking return – but his 17.5% ownership banked no further points as he was taken off at half-time with an injury.

He did watch the second half from the bench, so the move could well have been merely precautionary.

But while coach Pep Guardiola was suitably vague about the defender’s issue post-match, he did raise concerns about the current lack of fit centre-halves.

Joao Cancelo’s (£7.2m) 41% fan base were better served by their man. He lasted the entire match, set up the first goal and walked off nine points to the good.

Newcastle, unsurprisingly, sat deep and looked to counter on their hosts, with limited success.

They were particularly passive at the start of the second half, failing to complete a single pass while City enjoyed 99% possession.

Ederson (£6.2m) did have to make three saves, however, including a key one from substitute Callum Wilson (£7.1m).

But City were never going to blow a two-goal lead – Newcastle are not Madrid, after all.

Their other scorers on the day were Rodri (£5.5m) – his third straight start with a goal – and Phil Foden (£7.9m), who came on for the last 27 minutes.

Assists also came from Jack Grealish (£7.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.3m). The latter was due two bonus to equal his season’s best tally of 11 points.

Who lines up for City at Wolves will be key to many manager’s gameweek hopes now.

Jesus might have blanked, but he was subbed off after 63 minutes, so there’s still hope for his 11.4% ownership, while any fit defender is more than likely to get the nod in midweek.

Pep Roulette can always bite, though, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Arsenal 2 Leeds United 1

An Eddie Nketiah (£5.6m) brace was enough – just – to see Arsenal past a battling Leeds side that played more than 60 minutes with ten men.

The striker was Double Gameweek 36’s most popular purchase and he more than doubled his ownership as a result.

Two goals, maximum bonus and 13 points later, that was a very satisfied 8.1% of FPL managers who, lest we forget, still have another match to come from their man.

Nketiah made it four goals in as many gameweeks thanks, firstly, to an error from Leeds keeper Illan Meslier (£4.8m), who dithered on the ball long enough for the forward to nick it and score.

He then doubled his tally when he converted the excellent Gabriel Martinelli’s (£5.3m) cut-back.

Both goals originated down the Leeds right, where Luke Ayling (£4.3m) capped a personal nightmare by getting sent off (with a sprinkle of VAR) for a dangerous tackle on Martinelli.

A net 14,824 brought the defender in for a Leeds double involving Arsenal and Chelsea. He provided -3 points and will now miss the last three games of the season.

Raphinha’s (£6.3m) day out was only marginally better.

Once Ayling was binned off, it involved getting booked for dissent, being tormented at wing-back by Martinelli and then being hooked on 59 minutes to score nothing for his 11.9% ownership.

Arsenal failed to kill off a floundering Leeds, however, and a Diego Llorente (£4.5m) goal from a Junior Firpo (£4.7m) flick-on raised the prospect of a wholly unlikely comeback from the visitors.

That didn’t materialise, but the Gunners will need to be rather more ruthless at Tottenham on Thursday.

The team’s most owned player, Bukayo Saka (£6.7m), suffered a first blank in four starts and it was a measure of how well Leeds fought after the interval that Nketiah was the only home star to bring in bonus on the day.

Leicester City 1 Everton 2

Everton climbed out of the bottom three with a fighting victory at Leicester.

The Toffees’ Double Gameweek 36 tempted plenty into buying Richarlison (£7.5m) and Anthony Gordon (£4.7m).

The former produced an assist to make it five matches in seven with an attacking return. The latter blanked for a fourth consecutive game.

Everton’s goals came from Vitalii Mykolenko (£4.9m) and Mason Holgate (£4.2m), with Alex Iwobi (£5.8m) setting up the visitors’ opener.

But the hero on the day, once again, was keeper Jordan Pickford (£4.8m).

He followed up his five-save clean sheet and maximum bonus award 10-pointer against Chelsea with seven saves and two more bonus against Leicester.

A decidedly underwhelming 11,040 net new owners walked away with six points as a result.

The luckier ones on centre-half Michael Keane (£4.6m) scooped up clean sheet points as their man replaced Yerry Mina (£4.9m) after just 17 minutes but, crucially, after Leicester had equalised.

That goal came from Patson Daka (£7.0m), who pounced on Mina’s attempted header back to Pickford.

But try as they might, the Foxes couldn’t beat the Everton keeper again.

That was frustration enough for those FPL managers who’d bought into Leicester’s double.

And it was especially so for the 13.9% hoping for great things from James Maddison (£6.9m), who had a slight hamstring issue and didn’t even make the squad, let alone the bench.

The word ‘slight’ suggests the playmaker could be back for Wednesday’s visit from Norwich, so there’s still hope for him and his teammates to bring in some fantasy points.

Everton travel to wretched Watford on the same night.

Based on recent events, Pickford won’t be nearly as busy.

Norwich City 0 West Ham United 4

West Ham swatted aside a desperately poor Norwich as key fantasy assets from David Moyes’ side came good.

The Canaries’ double, the potential freedom they might have felt now that relegation has been confirmed and West Ham’s Europa League semi-final exit could have tempted some to dabble in Dean Smith’s players.

Resisting that temptation was easy enough for most – Teemu Pukki (£6.1m) was bought by a mere 19,152 and Tim Krul (£4.5m) by 270.

It took West Ham just 12 minutes for us all to see why.

The Hammers’ early opener came from the 11.2%-owned Said Benrahma (£5.9m), who doubled his tally in first-half injury time and finished with a 16-point haul.

Their other goals came from Manuel Lanzini (£5.6m) and, yep, assume the brace position, Michail Antonio (£7.4m).

That’s right, the 25%-owned striker has scored again, ending a 14-match goal drought. Then again, it involved tapping into an empty net after some serious home team defensive shenanigans.

The footballing gods clearly couldn’t take all that excitement, though, as Antonio didn’t appear for the second half because of a hip issue.

Post-match news suggested he wasn’t too badly injured, but Benrahma reportedly walked past the mixed zone on crutches.

West Ham’s other well-owned asset, Jarrod Bowen (£6.8m and 11.4%), played the whole match and set up three of the side’s four goals for a second double-digit haul in six gameweeks.

And for the first time since Gameweek 27, the Hammers also kept a clean sheet.

That should tell you all you need to know about how woeful Norwich were, so let’s not tire your eyes with anything more about them.

Not that there’s a lot else to say about West Ham either.

They, after all, have just two matches to play now and it’s Manchester City up next.

FPL Double Gameweek 36 Review – Saturday

Liverpool 1 Tottenham Hotspur 1

Heung-Min Son’s (£11.0m) 26.7% FPL ownership were the big winners in an epic clash at Anfield.

The Spurs midfielder scored his ninth goal in seven starts to give Spurs the lead and thoroughly justify his place in Double Gameweek 36’s top 15 transfers-in.

The goal, set up by Ryan Sessegnon (£4.3m), was classic Tottenham under Antonio Conte involving a well-worked break following a period soaking up pressure.

In fact, the visitors spent vast swathes of the match in soak mode. But although Liverpool had 22 shots to Spurs’ eight, the sides each had three attempts on target.

One of Liverpool’s was their equaliser, even if it was a deflected effort.

The shot came from the excellent Luis Diaz (£8.0m) – his second goal (to go with two assists) across the last four gameweeks – with the assist going to Thiago (£5.3m).

Try as they might, the Reds couldn’t conjure up a winner and it was Spurs who came the closest to nicking a victory when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.8m) tried to pick out Harry Kane (£12.4m) when he should probably have gone for goal himself.

Liverpool’s legion of well-owned stars produced little of note.

Mo Salah (£13.3m and 58.9%) was kept very quiet by the superb Ben Davies (£4.5m).

And Reds defenders (some of whom were used in a double-up by Free Hitters) produced two points apiece.

Apart, that is, from Konstantinos Tsimikas (£3.7m), who replaced Andy Robertson (£7.3m) after 63 minutes, got booked and produced zero points – exactly the same total as Joel Matip (£5.2m), who spent the match on the bench.

That blank from the centre-half was particularly spiteful for the 100,000+ managers who made him Liverpool’s most purchased player for their double.

It’s a trip to Aston Villa on Tuesday for Jurgen Klopp’s side next, by which time Man City will probably have replaced them at the top of the table.

A clean sheet at Villa Park is the bare minimum required to get many managers’ gameweek back on track.

Spurs then host Arsenal in a monster match on Thursday.

It would be no surprise if Son were to continue his current sparkling form.

Brighton 4 Manchester United 0

Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) and his Brighton teammates continued their hot end to the season with a thumping win over a hapless Man United.

The Belgium international scored one goal, set up another two and brought in 17 points – his best tally of the campaign – for his 1.5% ownership.

He’s hauled for five straight starts as well, racking up 51 points from Gameweek 32 – currently the best return among all FPL players.

Other stars have yet to complete their Gameweek 36, but it’s worth mentioning that Trossard has only featured in five of the Seagulls’ six matches during that spell.

However, much like the rest of the side, his heroics have largely passed us fantasy managers by.

Another forgotten hauler has been left-back Marc Cucurella (£4.9m), who also scored against United on his way to a best ever 12-pointer.

Such was the competition among Brighton’s rampant team that the defender’s goal and clean sheet didn’t even earn him any bonus.

Extra points instead went to the game’s other two scorers, Moises Caicedo (£4.5m) and Pascal Gross (£5.6m), the latter also providing an assist.

Danny Welbeck (£5.9m) rounded out the fantasy points with the side’s other assist.

Brighton were as superb as United were wretched. Defensively at least – the visitors forced Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) into a series of fine saves, but could not contain wave upon wave of Seagull attacks.

Some 760,826 managers captained Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.2m) – or ‘Ronalod’ as he appeared on United’s official Twitter team sheet.

Their man was booked and blanked for the first time since Gameweek 32.

United have just the one match to come now, so it’s surely a final goodbye to their players.

Brighton have two – away to Leeds and then home to West Ham.

Those fixtures are fair enough and their form is something else entirely.

Mini-league-winning differentials, anyone?

Chelsea 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 2

Chelsea blew a two-goal lead to draw with Wolves in a game that did next to nothing for most fantasy managers.

Well, the active ones.

The biggest winners on the day were the 7.4% who owned Romelu Lukaku (£11.4m).

The Belgium striker scored twice – one from a penalty he earned – and brought in maximum bonus for a 13-point haul.

Should he earn any points from Chelsea’s second match of the gameweek, away at Leeds on Wednesday, then he’ll record a season’s best tally.

Lukaku’s ownership peaked at just over three million in Gameweek 7.

That, presumably, is when most of his current managerial followers last paid any attention to FPL this season, seeing as he’s started just two of the last ten games for the Blues and his FPL fan club now sits the wrong side of 700,000.

The 0.7%-owned Christian Pulisic (£7.9m) provided an assist.

As for the popular Chelsea players, the pickings went from slim to non-existent.

Manager Thomas Tuchel had talked pre-match about the need to play at a higher tempo.

As a result, the most owned man in the squad, Mason Mount (£7.7m and 22.9%), was benched – no great surprise after nine straight league starts and an FA Cup final to come next weekend.

A trio of defenders and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy (£6.1m) also have double-digit ownership levels and all four walked off with a point apiece from the match.

Worryingly for Marcos Alonso (£5.7m and 14.5%), who was one of the gameweek’s most purchased players, he was subbed off at half-time, presumably as a precaution after going down in a challenge just before the interval.

As for the 17.8% on Reece James (£6.4m), their man moved back to centre-half for the second period, swapping places with Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.6m).

Tuchel explained both moves post-match.

“Azpi had a yellow card and was very busy. He was too offensive. That’s why we changed. Alonso was not injured, it was just a decision.”

Wolves snapped out of a three-match losing streak thanks to second-half goals from Francisco Trincao (£5.6m) and Conor Coady (£4.8m).

The latter, with 14% ownership, is easily the most popular player in the squad.

But, again, how many truly active managers would have stuck by a player whose recent scores have been 1, 1, 2, 2 and 0 is the big question.

Chiquinho (£5.5m) provided the assist for both the goals.

Huge congratulations to his 773 owners, including the 23 psychics who brought him in for this match.

Burnley 1 Aston Villa 3

Aston Villa started their double of double gameweeks with a convincing win at Burnley that could have big repercussions for the struggling Clarets.

Steven Gerrard’s side seem to be finding some form at just the right time for fantasy managers keen to tap into their packed end-of-season schedule.

Having lost four in a row, Villa are now unbeaten in three and have kept two clean sheets.

That should really have been three, only for Maxwel Cornet (£5.8m) to score a 91^st minute consolation goal for Burnley.

Erik Pieters (£4.1m), on as a sub, got the assist.

Gerrard shook things up for the visit to Turf Moor, employing three centre-halves to combat the home side’s aerial threat and dropping playmaker Philippe Coutinho (£7.1m) to the bench.

The midfielder’s 12.2% FPL ownership makes him the team’s most popular player, but he lost backers for this gameweek as fantasy bosses targeted Villa’s second double – home to Crystal Palace and then Burnley again – as the more attractive set of fixtures.

There was some interest in Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), however, and the striker found the net for the second straight match.

The visitors opened the scoring through Danny Ings (£7.7m) and doubled their lead thanks to the impressive Emiliano Buendia (£6.1m), who started ahead of Coutinho.

The midfielder also provided an assist and, with maximum bonus due, he was on course for a season’s best 14-pointer that will likely lead to an upsurge in owners for next week.

Villa’s other assists came from John McGinn (£5.6m) and Lucas Digne (£5.0m).

Burnley also have a double next week, their other match involving a trip to Tottenham.

They’ve worked wonders to still be in with a chance of avoiding relegation, but their fantasy stock remains low despite their busy schedule.

Brentford 3 Southampton 0

FPL managers had to make do with just an assist from Ivan Toney (£6.8m) as Brentford dismissed Southampton with relative ease.

The 16.4%-owned striker was easily the most popular player on display, although he was in the top three for Gameweek 36 transfers-out.

He set up Pontus Jansson’s (£4.4m) opener before Yoane Wissa (£5.7m) doubled the advantage just a minute later.

Kristoffer Ajer (£4.4m) rounded off the scoring, with assists coming from Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) and Christian Eriksen (£5.6m).

Two games to go for the Bees means more sales look inevitable for Toney and co.

As for Southampton, two sounds seem to be filling the ears of their players.

One is waves crashing on tropical beaches. The other is their fans singing that manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is getting sacked in the morning.

Neither is likely to inspire us to go big on their players, especially when it’s Liverpool next in Gameweek 37.

Crystal Palace 1 Watford 0

A Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) penalty won the match for Crystal Palace and finally relegated woeful Watford.

Michael Olise (£5.3m) was awarded the assist for the spot-kick, which was Zaha’s second straight return.

Maximum bonus was heading the midfielder’s way as well.

That would take him to a third double-digit haul of another hot and cold season, albeit one with his best ever return of 13 goals (and counting).

It was a second clean sheet in three matches for the Eagles, although Vicente Guaita’s (£4.6m) 6.1% fan base were denied the points as Jack Butland (£4.4m) was handed a rare start.

It’s a double up next for Patrick Vieira’s side, away at Aston Villa and then Everton.

Zaha has a bit of form. But then he has a lot more form for fantasy trolling, so take your pick.

Defenders are surely worth a look, however, especially for those using their Free Hit chip.

And talking of trolls, a significant number (150,000+) of wildly optimistic FPL bosses bought Emmanuel Dennis (£5.9m) for Watford’s double/relegation confirmation tour.

He blanked for a second straight start, although there’s still Everton in midweek to go.

Then again, that’s at Vicarage Road, where the Hornets have lost 11 straight league matches.

So, hey ho.
