The penultimate week of the Fantasy Premier League season has concluded, with Manchester City securing the title and Newcastle and Manchester United cementing the top four.

Here, we review some of the key FPL Gameweek 37 stats and highlights.

FPL Double Gameweek 37: Captaincy and transfer stats

While Double Gameweek 36 saw a captaincy debate between Alexander Isak (£7.0m) and Callum Wilson (£7.2m), there was no doubting the clear option for the armband in Double Gameweek 37.

With Manchester City doubling, the overwhelming majority of the top 250,000 FPL managers backed Erling Haaland (£12.4m).

And it’s fortunate City have another fixture this week, given the Norwegian was benched for the 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Arsenal had handed City the league title by losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest, a win that secured the home side’s top-flight status.

Haaland came on for 16 minutes, ensuring popular vice-captain Bruno Fernandes (£9.5m) was not required.

Double Gameweek 36 points were seemingly on the minds of managers ahead of Double Gameweek 37, with Ilkay Gundogan (£7.4m) brought into 658,000 teams.

The German was among those rested by Pep Guardiola for City’s first game of their double, failing to get a single minute on the pitch.

The injured Gabriel Martinelli, suspended Ivan Toney and ill Marcus Rashford were the popular sells.

A much-changed City lineup was fielded by Guardiola for the visit of Chelsea – but a victory was still secured.

Rico Lewis (£3.8m), Sergio Gomez (£4.4m), Cole Palmer (£4.2m) and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega (£3.7m) were among the starting 11, as the likes of Haaland, Gundogan, Jack Grealish (£7.1m) and Ruben Dias (£6.0m) dropped to the bench.

Julian Alvarez (£6.1m) deputised up front for Haaland and opened the scoring after 12 minutes, converting a Palmer pass.

The Argentine had the ball in the net in the second half too, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR following a handball from Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m). The incident also cost Mahrez owners assist points.

After the match, Guardiola was asked how he would ensure the squad was focused on the games ahead, including the FA Cup and Champions League finals.

He admitted City had been through a taxing time, hinting at tiredness among the ranks, although resting many of his key players will have helped ahead of facing Brighton in midweek. He said:

“I have been so demanding in this period. We lift the trophy so to think of going to Brighton is so exhausting. We know how difficult they are.

“The players have to celebrate otherwise it makes no sense. We will arrive with time to rest mentally for the two finals against United and Inter.

“We have to play two more games. I said enjoy it but be careful because we will destruct what we have done in these competitions.

“Now I have the feeling that all of us are a little bit tired because it’s been a long season. Now it’s the tendency to think it’s done.

“Still we have tough game at Brighton and Brentford, hopefully it can pass quick and then we have seven days to prepare United and Inter.”

Mbeumo at the double as Brentford defeat Spurs

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) scored twice as his good form since the strike partner Ivan Toney (£7.2m) was suspended for breaching FA betting rules.

The Bees defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-1, after falling behind to Harry Kane’s (£11.4m) 28th goal of the season.

Mbeumo now has three goals in his last two league games and could be a differential pick for Gameweek 38, although Brentford host champions City on the final day.

Yoane Wissa (£5.3m) grabbed a goal – his second in two – and an assist, giving manager Thomas Frank hope that his side can continue to score plenty of goals in talisman Toney’s absence.

All eyes will be on Brentford’s summer transfer activity ahead of the new season to see if Wissa is likely to cement his place in the team.

Newcastle held to draw by Leicester as Wilson hits post

Newcastle kept their first clean sheet since Double Gameweek 29 but failed to convert their chances against Leicester, drawing 0-0.

The result was good enough for the Magpies to confirm their place in the top four, however there was no joy for owners of their attacking assets.

Wilson and Isak started together again, while James Maddison (£7.8m) and Harvey Barnes (£6.6m) were surprise omissions from the Foxes lineup.

Newcastle were boosted by the return of Sean Longstaff (£4.3m) from injury but Joelinton (£6.0m) missed out, leaving the door open for Isak and Wilson to start together once again.

Wilson was among three Newcastle players to hit the post, with Miguel Almiron (£5.4m) and Bruno Guimaraes (£5.5m) – who could have been sent off for a high tackle on Boubakary Soumare (£4.4m) – also going close for the hosts.

Leicester managed an expected goals (xG) tally of just 0.18 – and that was only raised from zero in injury time, when Timothy Castagne (£4.3m) saw his shot saved by Nick Pope (£5.4m).

The Foxes go into the final day of the season needing a win against West Ham to have a chance of avoiding relegation. Like Leeds, they are two points behind Everton, who host Bournemouth.

Enciso stunner earns Brighton Europa League place

Brighton held City to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday to confirm their place in the top six.

Phil Foden (£8.0m) gave the champions the lead, with Haaland providing the assist for his only attacking return of the double gameweek.

But 19-year-old Enciso took the plaudits with a long-range strike that found the top corner, which sent Roberto De Zerbi’s side to the Europa League next season. He was assisted by Levi Colwill (£4.4m), who had more assists (two) than anyone else this week.

Kaoru Mitoma (£5.7m) owners were perhaps unfortunate not to see their man score more points in Gameweek 37. He had a goal ruled out for handball on his way to taking the most shots in the league this week.

The Japanese international dominated a number of key stats – see below.

Rotation on both sides was the key headline from a fantasy perspective, with Lewis Dunk (£4.8m) benched for the Seagulls. Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m) also dropped to the bench for the second time in three games. Evan Ferguson (£4.6m) made way for Danny Welbeck (£6.5m) despite his weekend brace.

City fielded a strong starting 11 but absentees from the squad included Jack Grealish (£7.1m), Manuel Akanji (£5.1) and Ruben Dias (£6.0m), while Ederson (£5.4m) was also left out of the starting 11.

Brighton managed 20 shots in the game – just the third time any side going up against a Pep Guardiola team has had that many in a top-flight game.

Rashford returns as United put four past Chelsea

Manchester United secured their place in the top four in style with a 4-1 win over Chelsea.

The Red Devils’ xG of 5.14 was the biggest in a single Premier League game this season, according to Opta.

United’s goals came from Casemiro (£4.9m), Anthony Martial (£6.3m), Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) and a Bruno Fernandes (£9.5m) penalty, with Joao Felix (£7.1m) cancelling out the clean sheet with a consolation goal.

But it was not all smiles. United lost Antony (£7.3m) to injury in the first half. Erik ten Hag described the problem as ‘serious’, however was unable to confirm its full extent. The Brazilian was replaced by Rashford after 29 minutes.

Luke Shaw (£5.3m) also came off at half-time with a back injury – again, there was no confirmation from ten Hag about his fitness for Gameweek 38 and beyond.

United needed a point to ensure they finished in the top four and their victory meant Liverpool were out of the running for the Champions League. They sit two points ahead of fourth-place Newcastle going into the final day.

The Magpies’ place in the Champions League is also confirmed.

Who’s winning FPL?

The race to be crowned Premier League champion might be over – but there’s still the matter of finding out the FPL winner for 2022/23.

Ali Jahangirov (FPL Gunz) went against the crowd last week by captaining Wilson over Isak – and that has gave him an edge over his rivals going into Double Gameweek 37.

Ali, who gave us his top tips for success earlier in the season when he first made it to number one in the world, is 18 points ahead of JY Lye going into Gameweek 38.

While he has not been afraid to go against Haaland for the captaincy at times this season, Ali played it safe this week and put the armband on the league’s leading goalscorer.

He brought in Fernandes ahead of Gameweek 37, taking out Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m).
