    a doubt – I’m keeping and starting, and I hope my bench will cover if he’s out.

    Hi Rich,

    Your thoughts on Man United defence? how about Dalot?

    @@RichClarke

    Dec 10 at 3:8PM

    decent budget pick. If you are able to focus on your defence this week you are in a minority! so many flags elsewhere its all about attacking changes and getting a side out this week. if wildcarding, Dalot is worth a punt at 4.4.

    Brilliant team reveal as usual by the legend and GOAT :) Good luck to you this week. I really admire how you have the mental strength and patience and planning to avoid taking hits.

    For me I had Sanchez/Steele – missing game. ESR doubt. Son – missing game Jota -doubt Davis (3rd non playing sub which I need to sort out eventually) and also Vardy who unlikely to play given he had to start mid-week so I’d have had 9 players and had to do a -8. I went for:
    Steele, Son and Vardy OUT for De Gea, B.Silva & Ronaldo IN. Hopefully this will stand me in good stead for this week and moving into busy xmas period and plan is to roll a tf next week and then do a Chelsea defender out and upgrade 3rd striker spot to Antonio then should have that deep squad set-up finally.

    What factors do you consider in order to NOT make a hit or do you just always NEVER take any hits whatever the situation/state of your team/squad is? And how do you be comfortable not taking hits to e.g. get Ronaldo this week especially as he has good fix and is most likely the main captain candidate soon once Salah goes to AFCON?

    Your mental fortitude and planning etc is why you have an amazing record year in year and and its also why i’m ranked 85k this year and you’re top 25k :) keep up the great work mate and loved the video you did with Fergi this week, brilliant insights.

    Most of all you seem to really enjoy helping and advising people and you are humble, credit to yourself and to the FFH.

    Thanks a lot Luke. In my article above I make a point about hits being ok for this week. in a situation where they are necessary, I have no problem with them and they help accelerate a restructure of the team, which you have figured out. Obviously, due to a deep bench I’ll get away without a hit again this week (which in a way backs up my point on having a deeper bench indirectly) but if I do get in a situation down the line due to bad luck, I’d take some hits. hope this helps

    @lukeguy7

    Dec 10 at 4:24PM

    That is awesome thanks so much for coming back to me :) Do you have a rule in your head you try to stick to about how many players your team/squad would need to have injured/unavailable before you’d consider taking hits? e.g. you will only take hits if you have for example 9 or less starting players available? (*assuming that is that you wouldn’t be playing your FH that gameweek of course*).

    Also have you always played in a style where you build a deeper squad/bench especially coming up to the xmas time or is that an approach you’ve adopted more so in the last 1-2 seasons due to covid?

  • @lukeguy7

    Dec 10 at 3:58PM

    How long do you think you will look to hold Wilson for as his fixtures turn now and if Ronaldo say gets a hat-trick vs Norwich and people are likely to start captaining him would that influence you towards trying to re-structure to get him in or do you intend to ignore him given you don’t take hits and your squad is set-up for squad depth rather than 2x premiums?

    @@RichClarke

    Dec 10 at 4:9PM

    I said to fergi I expect Ronaldo to score 4-6 goals in next group of fixtures (to new year) but obviously if he keeps scoring hat-tricks this will hurt me a provoke a potential reaction. I won’t panic though and back my strong mids to match or beat Ronaldo structured sides.. lets see.. that’s the challenge..

    @lukeguy7

    Dec 10 at 4:21PM

    Love it Rich and good luck to you. I suppose the key is to stay calm and no panic as you say, stick to your plan but then also be flexible and adaptable each gameweek

    Hi Rich… have you finally decided to transfer out Raphinha to Bernardo… As I think Smith Rowe and Foden both are available

    Dec 10 at 4:47PM

    Arteta said ESR is being assessed ahead of the game I believe unless there has been a further update since his PC earlier today?

    @lukeguy7

    Dec 10 at 4:49PM

    Latest update on ESR: Emile has trained today and he was feeling much better after losing him for the last game and hopefully he will be available to play. The rest [of the squad] is okay.

  • @lukeguy7

    Dec 10 at 4:47PM

    Hey Rich, final Q from me this gameweek :) how do you prioritise your transfers each gameweek? This might sound ‘obvious’ but do you always go for the highest immediate impact move every time or do you always evaluate the entire make-up of your 1st XI and squad each week before deciding which players are the priorities to take out or bring in?
    For example if this gameweek a player had Sanchez & Steel and Son and Kane and 1 FT would the order of priority be : 1)Kane OUT 2)Son OUT 3) Sanchez or Steele OUT based on value and also likely points potential of other similar players at each of those price points or is it not as simple as that and you look more holistically at your whole team and how you plan to change it both in the short term but also in the next 4-5 gameweeks based on fixtures swings etc (assuming no injuries or games called off due to covid)?
    And what is your secret to avoiding taking hits as this seems so much more ‘easier said than done’ and seems to be a trap that so so many fpl managers fall into? The psychology behind it is really interesting.

  • @Mohamed Mokhtar

    Dec 10 at 4:54PM

    What a legend! Two questions please I would appreciate ur insights on:

    1. I can get close to the “new template” with a hit or two by next GW. I still have my WC though. Will the first WC be more valuable nearer to its expiry or should I just play it to avoid 3 hits at most over two GWs. Im inclined to hold keep it as safety net if I need Ronaldo/lukaku and prep for AFCON/DGWs closer to year end but I am worried im being over safe here and lose my WC edge
    2. If I dont play WC I dont have as deep as ur bench (no 3rd sub) so what r ur thoughts about Mane (I have easy route from Son and Jota to Mane and BSilva) to at least avoid Jota bench headache or would it b unneeded high risk due to Mane price and Jota ownership if he plays?

    thanks Champ!

    @lukeguy7

    Dec 10 at 5:4PM

    Will let the GOAT Rich give you advice here mate but I’m pretty sure he is likely yo say for you to wildcard to avoid taking the hits firstly just pick players in your WC that aren’t going to AFCON bar mabye Salah. e.g. King over Dennis etc.

    For point 2, Mane is going to AFCON soon and Jota’s injury might only keep him out for one gw so best to hold him and focus moves elsewhere and even on WC probably better to spend the premium funds on Ronaldo rather than Mane. Good luck.

    Dec 10 at 5:34PM

  • @DaniSRB

    Dec 10 at 5:56PM

    Hi Rich,

    I am bit in a predicament. I got Dier, Son & Toney. My Bench is decimated to Livra, Duffy & Brownhill and I have only one transfer. Trying to avoid a -8 but Jota is ? as well.
    What do you recommend a -4 and play Brownhill or -8 and sort your team out so I am ahead of the pack mid week?

    Thanks!

    @@RichClarke

    Dec 10 at 6:1PM

    I think this isa week where many are in your predicament.. If the players you are getting in are players for the long term strategy of the team, take a -8, particularly if for high impact players . keep Jota and start him, but have a bench cover to come on if he doesn’t make it. It is, as you say a chance to get ahead of the changing template, albeit for a hit, but you can make that up over time.

    Hi Rich, when will the article be updated? 15 minutes left on the Deadline 😅

    @@RichClarke

    Dec 11 at 8:11AM

    I think this was the week where my article laid out the transfers and the three possible guys I would lose pending team news. Sometimes its necessary to try and gather information and do the transfer in the last minutes remaining. there is not always time to update the article and its not intended to be a ‘copy what I do’ service, more a guide to thinking. As gameweeks are so tightly packed, we have a publishing schedule for all our contributors and often we get one shot each in quick succession in order to get all the content out. Hope this sets expectations
