This FPL Gameweek 23 strategy article reviews the FPL points as a metric team after Gameweek 22. We take a look at the data before moving on to the team for Gameweek 23.

Gameweek 22 Review – FPL Strategy

A disappointing 43 after our -4 this week, which sees us drop from 39k to 72k. We lost three Double Gameweek FPL players in Chris Wood, Hugo Lloris and Sergio Reguilon before a ball was even kicked, due to postponements/transfers, and then Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) misses out on the Aston Villa game altogether despite his manager saying he was fine.

Still, what’s done is done and we move onto Gameweek 23!

Goalkeepers FPL Points Conceded and Scored and their next five fixtures

Goalkeepers

As we can see, it’s Norwich that have given up the most FPL points to opposition Goalkeepers so far.

Wolves, Arsenal, Watford and Brentford make up the remaining five. It is worth noting that the postponements are skewing these figures slightly, so I’ve also done this on a Points Per Game (PPG) basis:

What we see is that Burnley creep into the teams conceding the most points on a PPG basis!

When we look at FPL Points scored by goalkeepers, Wolves are top on a PPG basis, and Tottenham overtake Chelsea using PPG as well.

When we look at the fixtures, both Man City and Wolves have decent ones for their goalkeepers, but with all of the uncertainty going on, we probably won’t be using a transfer on a goalkeeper anytime soon.

Defenders

Defenders FPL Points Conceded and Scored and their next five fixtures

Chelsea are still miles ahead in terms of FPL Points scored, but some injuries to key men, combined with blank gameweeks coming up, are making it almost impossible to hold their remaining assets.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Spurs and Wolves make up the top five teams scoring the most FPL points. This is despite Spurs having played between two and four less games than their rivals.

Norwich sit bottom of the table for points conceded. Newcastle, Brentford, Wolves and Southampton make up the teams conceding the most FPL points to opposition defences. Wolves both scoring and conceding lots of FPL Points. Now let’s look at it on a PPG basis:

We see Burnley and Everton creep into the teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition Defenders now, having played only 17 and 19 games respectively.

Looking at the fixtures, I’d expect a Chelsea defender to a Man City defender to be a very popular transfer this week. Whilst Southampton and Brentford are just outside the Points conceded on a PPG basis, Man City are an elite defence.

Midfielders

The Midfield Table shows Liverpool are now only 24 points clear at the top for most FPL points scored. Man City have been closing the gap significantly in recent weeks after some monster midfield hauls.

Man United, Chelsea and West Ham complete the top five in terms of Points Scored.

Norwich have conceded the most FPL points to opposition Midfield units so far.

Leeds, Brentford, Newcastle and Watford make up the five teams conceding the most points. Let’s see how this changes on a PPG basis:

Here we see Burnley back in the teams conceding the most FPL Points to the opposition position, replacing Brentford.

They’ve really struggled this season and having just sold Chris Wood (£6.7m) to Newcastle, I struggle to see them staying up.

Having just signed Philippe Coutinho (£7m), Aston Villa find themselves coming into a nice fixture run in terms of teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition midfielders.

Coutinho came off the bench on his debut and notched a goal, and he’s worth keeping an eye on ahead of what could be a tasty run.

Forwards

Forwards FPL Points Conceded and Scored and their next five fixtures

Watford, Leicester, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Southampton make up the top five teams with forwards scoring the most FPL points so far.

A lot of these teams play two up top each week, which can sway the numbers to a certain extent.

Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is top of the scoring charts on 98 points. However, he hasn’t impressed for a while and I could see people moving him on in future weeks.

Newcastle, Everton, Norwich, Southampton and Crystal Palace are the teams conceding the most FPL points to opposition forwards. Let’s see what the PPG table looks like:

We see Watford replace Crystal Palace in terms of points conceded here, conceding an average of 6.6 FPL Points per game after 19 games played.

Home and Away Total Points Scored and Conceded Tables

As evidenced above, most of the teams scoring the most FPL points are also conceding the least. This table is starting to get messy now with all of the postponements, but still gives us an idea of the best performing clubs doing well and those worth targeting.

I’ve also done this using points difference like goal difference:

Home and Away Data – Points Per Game Basis

Each position FPL Points Scored and Conceded, on a PPG basis both Home and Away

The teams performing badly at home according to FPL Points Conceded per game are Watford, Norwich, Man United, Newcastle and Wolves.

On the other hand, Norwich, Leeds, Newcastle, Brentford, and Burnley are performing poorly away from home. Note that Newcastle and Norwich are giving up plenty of points regardless of whether they’re home or away.

The teams performing well at home according to FPL Points Scored in respect of Points Per Game are Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs.

Liverpool and Man City are absolutely dominating in their home fixtures, averaging over 60 FPL Points Scored per game.

The teams performing well away from home according to total FPL Points Scored per game are Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham, Man City and Wolves.

So after that deep dive into the data, here is the current lineup for Gameweek 23:

The Gameweek 23 Bus Team

One option could be to roll the transfer, but once again any sort of planning is difficult when so many games have been postponed.

Either more games could be called off, or some could be added back in to create Double Gameweeks.

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) could maybe make way immediately as part of the moves to get Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) back when he returns from International Duty.

This was always a short term move but United look far better without him, so I might just rip the plaster off there.

Currently I have Ben Foster (£4.1m) starting over Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) but Watford don’t fill me with confidence regarding a possible clean sheet.

Transfers – FPL Gameweek 23 Strategy

I’ll be waiting as late as possible here, to see if any Double Gameweek fixtures get announced.

Captaincy – FPL Gameweek 23 Strategy

I’m not confident on my captaincy pick this week, with few standout options. The armband is currently on Diogo Jota (£8.4m) but I may go back to Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) – despite also considering selling him!

Another late decision unfortunately, it really is a mixed bag this week.
