In his FPL Gameweek 26 review, Fantasy Premier League author David Wardale watches an enjoyable end to the double now known simply as Salah³ as Arsenal fight back to beat Wolves.

Most managers were probably still basking in their Salah returns, however, the Egyptian scoring for Liverpool in their 3-1 win over Norwich and twice more in a 6-0 drubbing of Leeds.

But the many managers who sold a certain Man United midfielder to fund a move to you know who won’t have completely enjoyed the Red Devils’ 4-2 win at Leeds on Sunday.

FPL Gameweek 26 Review

Arsenal 2 Wolves 1

Arsenal came from behind to win what was, to use a technical term, a cracking game of football.

Wolves scored early and were well worth the lead, which they held with relative comfort until Gunners manager Mikel Arteta’s substitutions changed everything.

The match included two of the top three Gameweek 26 transfers-in – Bukayo Saka (£6.5m) and Raul Jimenez (£7.4m).

In fact, five of the 12 most popular purchases for the double were on the pitch, so fantasy interest was high.

Only one of them, Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m), produced a noteworthy return, however.

The striker thought he’d scored the home side’s 95th minute winner, but that was swiftly downgraded to an assist – his third in as many starts – when it became clear his scuffed effort wasn’t goal-bound until Wolves keeper Jose Sa (£5.2m) deflected it into the net.

That capped a remarkable turnaround for Arsenal.

Another of those five brought in by many managers, Gabriel (£5.3m), handed Wolves the lead after ten minutes when his back pass went straight to Hee-Chan Hwang (£5.4m), who rounded Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) and stroked the ball home from a tight angle,

To say the visitors deserved their lead was an understatement.

They had a goal disallowed, the one that stood and a big chance missed by Jimenez all within a breathless first 15 minutes.

The Gunners huffed and puffed without ever truly troubling Sa and he and the Wolves defence were looking good for a second clean sheet in three gameweeks until Arteta’s inspired changes.

He brought on Nicolas Pepe (£6.9m) and Eddie Nketiah (£5.4m) and the pair combined brilliantly for the former to equalise before Lacazette’s late, late intervention.

Wolves have another double in early March and their schedule is very attractive until a marked shift in difficulty from Gameweek 33.

Arsenal don’t play this weekend, but those who bought their assets for this gameweek would be wise to hold for three good reasons.

They too have a double, in Gameweek 29, even if one of those fixtures is a visit from Liverpool.

They’re in fine form, having won seven of their last nine matches, and the only defeat in that run was an unlucky one to Man City.

Finally, their run-in is generally kind, although they do have rescheduled matches against Spurs and Chelsea to factor in as well.

Emile Smith Rowe (£5.8m) missed the match with an illness (but not Covid), so he could well be back for Gameweek 28’s trip to Watford.

Probably less likely to return so quickly is Nelson Semedo (£4.8m).

The Wolves defender went off with what looked like a hamstring injury. He left the pitch bang on 60 minutes though, which was a decent parting gift for his 3.2% ownership.

He was also in line for a bonus point to further soften the blow for his managers.

Liverpool 6 Leeds 0

Pity the poor managers who triple captained Mo Salah (£13.1m).

Not so far into Liverpool’s demolition of Leeds at Anfield, their man had an assist and two goals to his name (and three for the gameweek) and 65 minutes to complete his hat-trick/score a few more.

He then had an effort cleared off the line and went into the interval with just 25 points (times three for many, don’t forget) to his name.

Sixty minutes came and went and that score rose to 26.

But the third goal just would not come and, worse, Sadio Mane (£11.7m) scored twice late on to steal the maximum bonus award from Salah.

So those triple captainers had to make do with a measly 84 points from their man.

Ah well. Better luck next year with that chip, eh?

The other goals on the night came from Joel Matip (£4.9m) – he’s scored exactly one goal in each of his five previous Premier League seasons, so that should be that for this campaign – and Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m).

Despite racking up 12 points apiece on the night, neither earned any extras as Andy Robertson (£7.2m) produced two assists to take the one bonus point not wolfed down by Mane (who also assisted) and Salah.

The left-back now has the same number of assists – ten – as Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) for a fraction of both the cost and the ownership (7.2% compared to 46.6%).

He also has all the form, with five assists to his teammate’s one over the pair’s last five starts.

Jordan Henderson (£5.0m), on as a sub, grabbed a late assist.

Leeds are in big trouble now, having conceded 16 goals over the last four matches.

Raphinha (£6.5m) did at least start the match this time and he had a goal ruled out, rightly, for offside.

Needless to say, going anywhere their players at the moment is unwise.

The worst thing you can say about Liverpool is that they don’t play in Gameweek 27.

They’ll have a double not long after that, though, to ensure none of their key assets go anywhere but our benches this weekend.

Burnley 1 Spurs 0

Burnley got back to being completely, well, Burnley with a hard-fought 1-0 victory secured by a defender heading in a free-kick at a wet and windy Turf Moor.

Ben Mee (£4.8m) was the defender and, with clean sheet and maximum bonus points thrown in, he produced 15 points – more than double his previous best return for the season.

The assist came from Josh Brownhill (£4.3m), who’s had quite the double gameweek, what with him recording both his attacking returns for the campaign over the last five days.

Neither player is exactly well-owned, although 1.5% (for Mee) and 2.3% actually represent the higher echelons of FPL popularity among Clarets players.

Top of that underwhelming table is Wout Weghorst (£6.5m and 4.1%), but he got nowhere near the 12-point turn he executed at Brighton.

Equally disappointing was Spurs striker Harry Kane (£12.2m), even if he came painfully close to building on his 13-pointer at Man City by hitting the bar with a header – a rare bright moment in an otherwise dire display from Spurs.

They have another double, in Gameweek 29, and almost entirely excellent fixtures for the rest of the season.

But their inconsistency – beating City, but losing four games in between times – does not inspire fantasy confidence, even with the pedigree of the likes of Kane and Heung-Min Son (£10.8m).

Burnley are everything Tottenham are not: steady, miserly, no-nonsense and beaten just the once (by Liverpool) in their last six matches.

They’ve also kept three clean sheets in that time, have another double starting this weekend and their schedule is generally favourable – including yet more extra fixtures – from now onwards and especially from Gameweek 32.

The defence was bolstered by a speedy return from Covid for James Tarkowski (£4.9m) and the only negative on the night was the absence of Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) with a foot injury.

Manager Sean Dyche was hopeful, however, that the midfielder would be fit for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Watford 1 Crystal Palace 4

Crystal Palace bounced back from their cruel loss to Chelsea by trouncing Watford.

Hornets boss Roy Hodgson spoke pre-match about how strange it would be trying to inflict defeat on his former club.

But it was clearly far stranger for his players.

Palace had five shots on target to Watford’s one, so both sides were actually quite ruthless.

Josh King (£5.9m) was one player who wasn’t and his entirely awful double gameweek ended with him being hooked on 50 minutes for a lousy one-pointer, and three across the two games.

He’s now gone 12 starts without a goal, although at least he had a better double than Palace striker Odsonne Edouard (£6.6m).

He played one whole minute – the last one – of the Eagles’ two fixtures and earned one big, shiny point as a result, no doubt blocking a half-decent return from the bench for plenty of managers while he was (barely) about it.

Moussa Sissoko (£4.4m) was the home side’s scorer, heading in a Kiko Femenia (£4.3m) corner.

That pegged back Palace’s early lead, given to them by Jean-Philippe Mateta’s (£5.2m) deflected effort.

The assist came from Conor Gallagher (£6.2m), who was back after missing out against his parent club Chelsea at the weekend.

He then restored Palace’s lead and hauled for the first time in five starts.

He didn’t bring in maximum bonus, however, as Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) scored two late goals to hog that particular honour.

The visitors’ other assists came from Tyrick Mitchell (£4.5m), James McArthur (£4.3m) and Jordan Ayew (£5.8m).

The result ended a sticky run of three losses and three draws for Palace, but their immediate schedule won’t inspire much fantasy interest.

Watford’s fixtures are similarly tricky, with a Double Gameweek 28 against Arsenal and Wolves likely to see sales of the likes of Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m), who scored against Aston Villa but might well struggle to impress against rather more adept defensive set-ups.

Leeds United 2 Manchester United 4

Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m) scored in consecutive matches for the first time this season as Man United won a wild game at Leeds in which the teams produced 15 shots on target between them.

The midfielder also provided an assist and earned two bonus points for a second straight double-digit return.

Some 430,000+ bosses sold him for the gameweek – most, presumably, to finance a switch to Mo Salah (£13.1m) for his double.

The Egyptian is likely to outscore him yet, but the Portugal international’s haul felt impeccably timed to cause fantasy hurt to many.

Even with all those sales, Fernandes was the third most captained player of Gameweek 26.

The second was Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), who scored last week but blanked again this – for the sixth time in the last seven matches.

In considerably better form is Jadon Sancho (£8.9m). He set up two of United’s goals, was handed maximum bonus and walked away with a season’s best 11 points.

The conditions were awful at a rainy and wind-swept Elland Road, but somehow the Leeds defence was even worse.

The visitors were 2-0 by half-time as a result.

Harry Maguire (£5.4m) headed home a Luke Shaw (£5.0m) corner for the opener before Fernandes doubled the advantage from a Sancho cross.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa made a big call by benching the 14.7%-owned Raphinha (£6.5m), but brought him on for the second half and the move paid dividends within minutes.

Rodrigo (£6.2m) halved the deficit with a cross that floated over David de Gea (£5.3m) and into the net and Leeds were level within a minute when Raphinha bundled in Dan James’ (£6.0m) low cross from close range.

The visitors could have crumbled at that point. Instead, they reasserted their superiority and led again when substitute Fred (£4.9m) finished a fine break with an emphatic finish.

That was the Brazilian’s third return in five matches.

Fellow sub Anthony Elanga (£4.8m) rounded off the scoring in the 88^th minute when put through by Fernandes.

United manager Ralf Rangnick made some interesting changes for the game, benching Diogo Dalot (£4.6m) and handing Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) a first start of the season.

The shake-up seemed to work, although the 23.8% who still own Ronaldo should be concerned by their man’s form.

He’s not had the best of service recently, but missed a superb chance early on at Elland Road when set up by Paul Pogba (£7.4m).

As for Leeds, their blood and thunder approach is great to watch, but their defensive shortcomings become starker by the week.

Those who sold Fernandes for Salah will be licking their lips when Bielsa’s side visit Anfield on Wednesday.

Wolves 2 Leicester City 1

Wolves began their double gameweek with a slightly fortunate win over Leicester that produced few decent fantasy returns for many managers.

Much of the gameweek transfer activity regarding Wolves assets involved their defenders – more managers (13%) owned Conor Coady (£4.7m) than the combined total on the Leicester back four (12.5%).

However, an Ademola Lookman (£6.0m) goal in the 41^st minute put paid to dreams of a clean sheet.

At least the 300,000+ managers who made Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) the third most popular purchase of Gameweek 26 had some joy as the striker set up the opening goal for Ruben Neves (£5.3m) – a second consecutive return for the Mexico international.

A 1-1 scoreline at half-time was about right.

Leicester, despite James Maddison (£6.8m) being deemed fit enough only for the bench after coming off with an illness on Thursday, created some good chances.

The Foxes were further weakened by the absence of Harvey Barnes (£6.5m) – manager Brendan Rodgers talking pre-match of the attacker waking up with a slight hamstring issue – but they troubled Wolves throughout.

Youri Tielemans (£6.4m) was guilty of a couple of missed chances, although he did work Jose Sa (£5.2m) with a shot from the edge of the area as time ran out.

In fact, Leicester had seven shots on target to the hosts’ three, it was just that Wolves were the more clinical.

The home side rode out a fine start to the second half from the visitors and then scored on the break, Daniel Podence (£5.5m) netting from a Leander Dendoncker (£4.7m) pass.

That was the second straight game with a return from the Belgium international.

Wolves held on for the win, although it was a mark of Leicester’s attacking intent that the lively Lookman was set to bring in maximum bonus rather than one of the home side’s match winners.

A trip to Arsenal on Thursday will be another, probably even sterner, test of Bruno Lage’s side.

But their schedule after that, including another double in Gameweek 28, is good enough to warrant further investment, especially if Jimenez can continue his recent return to form.

Aston Villa 0 Watford 1

Previously on Watford Double Gameweek, the Hornets were beaten 3-0 at home to Norwich, lost star striker Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m) to a one-match suspension and ended winless, goalless and with just the one point.

The Hornets’ second double of the season started in dramatically different fashion to their first – for both the team and the match-winner at Aston Villa.

Dennis scored the game’s only goal to give Roy Hodgson his first win in his latest job.

The assist came from Ismaila Sarr (£5.7m), back from a triumphant Afcon and with a gameweek-leading three big chances created by way of further celebration.

Dennis has lost owners every gameweek since his -1 against the Canaries, with a further 64,000+ selling him despite this double at Villa and then home to Crystal Palace.

He promptly hauled for the first time since Gameweek 20, hoovering up the maximum bonus award for good measure.

It was a classic Hodgson display from the team.

Villa had 20 shots to Watford’s eight, but the home side had only one attempt on target, whereas the Hornets managed four, all of them big chances.

Dennis had two of them and his strike partner, Josh King (£5.9m), one.

Hodgson spoke post-match of needing ‘people who are prepared to chase back a bit more than they’re used to doing. To put their foot into challenges a bit more than they’re used to doing’.

It’s not going to be pretty, then. But with a second clean sheet secured from the last four matches, it could well be effective.

Villa are certainly not the latter at present, with four defeats and a draw across their last seven fixtures.

Manager Steven Gerrard responded to a recent dip in form for Ollie Watkins (£7.6m) by replacing him with Danny Ings (£7.7m) up front.

He blanked and hasn’t scored since Gameweek 21. Watkins has done nothing of note since Gameweek 17.

But with a double to come in Gameweek 28, some fantasy managers might well go with fixtures over form and hold onto, or even buy into, Villa assets.

Crystal Palace 0 Chelsea 1

The final team with double fixtures, Crystal Palace, fell to a defeat that was as harsh as it was late.

Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) volleyed in substitute Marcos Alonso’s (£5.6m) cross in the 89^th minute of a match not exactly blessed with attacking flair.

Home keeper Vicente Guaita (£4.6m) made a couple of saves in the first half, only to be replaced in the interval by Jack Butland (£4.4m) after picking up a knee problem.

His understudy’s main job was to pick the ball out of the net – twice.

Ziyech thought he’d scored earlier in the half, only for VAR to rule Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) offside before his shot was parried by Butland to the Chelsea midfielder.

That was the pinnacle of an entirely forgettable match for the striker, who had just seven touches all game – four fewer than Alonso managed from 16 minutes off the bench.

Palace were even less threatening, failing to have a single shot on target.

But it was cruel for them to be denied a second consecutive clean sheet, although a midweek trip to Watford could get them straight back on to that particular saddle.

That match might also involve heightened fantasy interest as Palace’s most popular player in FPL, Conor Gallagher (£6.2m and 14.3%), should be back after missing the encounter against his parent club.

Another group hoping for better times is the 9.3% who still own striker Odsonne Edouard (£6.6m).

He was benched for the second time in three matches and played not a single minute against Chelsea.

The Blues have a blank Gameweek 27 and a great schedule to follow.

They will, however, need to up their attacking game if they’re to attract fantasy interest.

Southampton 2 Everton 0

Southampton deservedly took three points from a match they dominated.

The goals came from Stuart Armstrong (£5.8m) and substitute Shane Long (£5.4m), with assists for the in-form Che Adams (£6.9m) and the returning Tino Livramento (£4.3m).

The young full-back’s bargain bucket price means he’s still a well-owned (9.5%) asset even though he’d not started since Gameweek 19 until Everton rolled into town.

He rewarded the loyal with maximum bonus and a season’s best 12-point return.

Things were less rosy for the side’s most popular player, the 11.1%-owned Armando Broja (£5.4m).

He put on close to a quarter of a million new owners for a second straight gameweek and promptly blanked…for a second straight gameweek.

Strike partner Adams, by contrast, has only attracted around 90,000 managers over the same period despite producing returns for three matches now.

The Saints should have had the game done and dusted long before their opening goal in the 52^nd minute, only for sloppy finishing and Toffees keeper Jordan Pickford (£4.9m) to keep things level.

He finished the match with nine saves.

He also made it a third straight gameweek providing at least four points, even though he’s kept only one clean sheet and conceded five goals across that spell.

Everton were very poor going forward, failing to hit the target with any of their nine attempts.

Conversely, Southampton are in a fine place at present – unbeaten in four league games, three of which involved Spurs and both Manchester clubs.

Their schedule is set pretty fair for the rest of the campaign and includes a double in Gameweek 28.

Expect plenty of investment in the Saints therefore, with captain James Ward-Prowse (£6.4m) still a decent differential shout.

The 4.9%-owned midfielder blanked against Everton. And yet he didn’t…

Ward-Prowse still brought in four points despite no goals or assists on the day. Instead, he earned a bonus point chiefly by providing three big chances.

West Ham 1 Newcastle 1

The gameweek’s first kick-off produced one of its least relevant matches, fantasy-wise, as West Ham and Newcastle battled to a draw.

The takeaways were almost entirely negative ones.

The 36.1%-owned Michail Antonio (£7.7m) failed to score. Again.

And the 33.7%-owned Jarrod Bowen (£7.1m) blanked for only the second time since Gameweek 17.

In fact, a booking meant it was just his second one-pointer of the season.

That was a blow to a lot of bosses, especially the 160,000+ who’d made him one of the week’s more popular buys despite his lack of double fixtures.

Even Hammers defender Craig Dawson (£4.9m) scoring for the second match running – and hauling for a third – merely served to highlight the fact that he’d lost managers for the fifth consecutive gameweek.

The assist came from Aaron Cresswell (£5.3m) – a fourth return in six gameweeks. Yep, he lost owners heading into the match as well.

Newcastle deserved the point Joe Willock’s (£5.7m) first goal of the season earned them.

That’s a positive, so we’ll end proceedings right there.

Except to mention that Newcastle have a double in Gameweek 28, but few players with which we might exploit it.

And just like that…another negative.

Man City 2 Spurs 3

The discarded man of the double gameweek, Harry Kane (£12.2m), rediscovered his scoring mojo as Tottenham stunned Man City in Saturday’s late kick-off.

A net -80,033 managers sold the Spurs striker prior to the match, despite fixtures against City and Burnley.

Despite, or because of – Kane, after all, hadn’t scored in three matches, all of which Tottenham had gone on to lose.

But they didn’t lose at The Etihad, thanks to a brace from the forward and a stellar performance from Heung-Min Son (£10.7m).

The South Korean, in stark contrast to Kane, was the fourth most bought player of the gameweek, and he responded with two assists.

He set up the opener for Dejan Kulusevski (£6.0m) – his first goal for the club – before Ilkay Gundogan (£7.1m) equalised as City took control of the match.

The home side dominated possession (72%) and had 21 shots.

But Spurs actually had more attempts on target (5v4) and from one of those, Kane restored their lead when he steered in Son’s cross.

Further intense pressure rained down on the visitors and they finally cracked on 90 minutes when Cristian Romero (£4.8m) was pinged for handling Bernardo Silva’s (£7.3m) cut-back in the penalty area and substitute Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m) blasted home the spot-kick.

But amazingly, Spurs came again and Kane headed home Kulusevski’s cross 95 minutes into a pulsating game.

Fantasy-wise, the big winners were Son’s 16.9% ownership, who were in line for a double-digit return, and the brave souls who sold big-ticket Man City players to finance major moves for double gameweek players.

Few of those moved for Kane, obviously.

But if he can back up his undoubted class with a confirmation of his form midweek at Burnley, then we might have a striker worth investing in for the run-in, especially as Tottenham have a generally favourable schedule for the rest of the season.

Less favourable was the news about Sergio Reguilon (£5.3m), the 14.7%-owned defender tweeting pre-match about his positive test for Covid.

Liverpool 3 Norwich 1

A Mo Salah (£13.1m) goal got most managers’ double gameweek off to a good start, but we all had to wait an uncomfortably long time for it to happen.

Gameweek 26’s most bought and most captained player – he was also triple captained by a record million and more – turned things round for Liverpool, scoring their second goal in three minutes after Norwich had started the second half by taking a shock lead.

Milot Rashica (£5.2m) was the Canaries’ scorer, Josh Sargent (£5.4m) with the assist, although that didn’t produce as much FPL woe as might have been expected.

That’s because both Andy Robertson (£7.2m and 7.7%) and, more pertinently, the 48.1%-owned Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) were rested by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp – two of seven changes he made from the team that started in Milan on Wednesday.

Robertson’s replacement, Konstantinos Tsimikas (£3.7m), set up the home side’s equaliser, scored by Sadio Mane (£11.7m), before Salah’s strike.

The Egyptian’s goal came from an Alisson (£6.0m) assist after the keeper’s long ball took out most of the Norwich defence.

It was one of Salah’s two big chances from a gameweek-leading eight attempts in total.

Liverpool secured the points with a first goal from Luis Diaz (£8.0m), assisted by Jordan Henderson (£5.0m), much to the delight of the 105,431 who tapped into the new signing for the Reds’ double.

That delight will be short-lived should Klopp rotate again for the Wednesday visit of Leeds, which wouldn’t be a huge surprise with a Carabao Cup final to plan for next weekend.

But it would seem more probable that the likes of Salah, not Diaz, would be benched, seeing as he was one of the four who weren’t rested following the Champions League trip to Italy.

If so, he’d end the double gameweek with a decent enough return of 10 points – should the projected maximum bonus stay with him, that is.

But that’s a long way off the fevered hopes of some FPL managers – one on Twitter talked of ‘The Best Triple Captain GW In The Chip’s History’.

That’s quite the statement. And it might still hold true.

We’ll find out soon enough.

Arsenal 2 Brentford 1

A late, late Brentford goal took the fantasy shine off what was otherwise an excellent Arsenal start to their double gameweek.

Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) scored, from a Kristoffer Ajer (£4.4m) assist, to wipe out a Gunners clean sheet that looked very much on the cards for the previous 92 minutes of a one-sided match.

With two Arsenal defenders, Kieran Tierney (£5.1m) and Gabriel (£5.3m), among the top 12 for transfers-in, and Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) and Ben White (£4.5m) already well-owned, it’s fair to say Norgaard’s strike was not a popular one in FPL.

It had all been going so swimmingly as well, what with two other popular buys – Bukayo Saka (£6.5m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) – producing returns.

The latter set up Emile Smith Rowe’s (£5.8m) opening goal before Saka doubled the lead, assisted by Thomas Partey (£5.0m).

Arsenal were certainly good value for the win. They had two penalty shouts in the first half and worked visiting keeper David Raya (£4.3m) throughout.

Smith Rowe and Saka were due to share maximum bonus points, which would make it three double-digit hauls apiece for the young midfielders this season.

It should also mean the pair start the second match of the Gunners’ double, at home to Wolves, on Thursday.

Then again, Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m) will be back from suspension and pushing for an immediate return.

The 21.5%-owned Saka is probably more likely to keep his place if that is the case as he’s been a mainstay of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s plans for a while now.

Brentford, meanwhile, are in free fall, with a draw and six defeats from their last seven matches.

They’ve looked toothless since Ivan Toney’s (£6.5m) ‘match fitness’ was compromised by an infamous short break in Dubai.

And the sentiments he expressed about the club seem like sound advice to any manager contemplating bringing in Bees’ assets at present.

Brighton 0 Burnley 3

Wout Weghorst (£6.5m) put in an early bid for legendary double gameweek status with a man of the match performance at Brighton.

The new Burnley striker scored his first goal for the Clarets and then set up another for a 12-point haul as Sean Dyche’s side found a ruthless streak at the Amex Stadium.

The hosts had 69% possession and 11 shots, but only one of those forced visiting keeper Nick Pope (£5.4m) into action.

Burnley, by contrast, scored from three of their four attempts on target.
