This FPL Gameweek 28 strategy article reviews the FPL points as a metric team after Gameweek 27. We take a look at the data before moving on to the team for Double Gameweek 28.

Gameweek 27 Review – FPL Strategy

Our first Free Hit Chip was deployed in Gameweek 27, in part due to the fact we have triple Liverpool and triple Arsenal from our wildcard/additional transfers. 61 was a great score and has taken us from 31k to 25k! Spurs were a large reason for a good gameweek, as our Burnley trio disappointed.

The Data – FPL Gameweek 28 Strategy

Goalkeepers

Goalkeepers FPL Points Conceded and Scored, with their next 5 fixtures based on Points Conceded by their opposition

As we can see, it’s Norwich that have given up the most FPL points to opposition Goalkeepers so far.

Wolves, Brighton, Burnley, Watford and Brentford make up the remaining teams in green. It’s worth noting that the postponements are skewing these figures slightly, so I’ve also done this on a Points Per Game (PPG) basis:

What we see is that Brighton and Brentford move out of the teams conceding the most points on a PPG basis.

When we look at FPL Points scored by goalkeepers, Liverpool are top on a PPG basis, with Wolves, Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea making up the top five.

When we look at the fixtures, Chelsea, Everton and Leeds have a decent run on the horizon. However, Chelsea and Everton don’t play in Gameweek 30, so bear this in mind.

Defenders

Chelsea are still top of the table for FPL Points scored by their defenders, with Man City in second.

Liverpool, Spurs and Wolves make up the top five teams scoring the most FPL points.

Norwich sit bottom of the table for points conceded. Leeds, Brentford, Wolves and Watford make up the teams conceding the most FPL points to opposition defences. Wolves both scoring and conceding lots of FPL Points. Now let’s look at it on a PPG basis:

We see Burnley and Everton creep into the teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition Defenders now, having played less games overall.

Looking at the fixtures, if Leeds’ new manager can cut out the leaks defensively, they have some great upcoming fixtures here. They also play in Gameweek 30 for those of us not on Free Hit. But we’d need to see a big upturn in defensive quality in a short period of time.

Chelsea, whilst blanking in Gameweek 30, also have an incredible run coming up, starting with a Double Gameweek this week. Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) is the safe pick, whereas someone like Reece James (£6.2m), just returning from injury, could be a high risk, high reward option.

Midfielders

The Midfielder table shows Liverpool have extended their lead again after a sensational Double Gameweek 26. Man City are in second, with West Ham, Man United and Chelsea making up the top five.

Leeds have conceded the most FPL points to opposition Midfield units so far.

Norwich, Brentford, Watford and West Ham make up the five teams conceding the most points. Let’s see how this changes on a PPG basis:

Here we see Burnley back in the teams conceding the most FPL Points to the opposition position, replacing West Ham.

Chelsea, Everton and Leeds all have decent fixtures, but as mentioned above, only Leeds play in Blank Gameweek 30. Raphinha (£6.5m) could be an interesting option if the new manager can get him on song.

Forwards

Forwards FPL Points Conceded and Scored, with their next 5 fixtures based on Points Conceded by their opposition

Watford, Leicester, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Southampton make up the top five teams with Forwards scoring the most FPL points so far.

A lot of these teams play two up top each week, which can sway the numbers to a certain extent.

There really isn’t a lot to choose from at this position right now, making it tricky to identify targets for our team.

Newcastle, Everton, Norwich, Man United and Watford are the teams conceding the most FPL points to opposition forwards. Let’s see what the PPG table looks like:

Watford Forwards are averaging 10.2 PPG at the moment, and this is dropping weekly since Roy Hodgson has arrived. They’re a definite sell in my opinion.

Spurs and Chelsea have decent fixtures coming up but with Spurs so topsy turvy and Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) not impressing at all, it’s a big chunk of budget to use up.

Spurs do now play in Gameweek 30, so I’d foresee Harry Kane (£12.3m) being a popular option, given the lack of Forward options out there right now.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) at Wolves also has a good double this week, followed by a good fixture against Everton next week, and then a fixture in Gameweek 30. The only trouble is that Wolves don’t score a lot of goals. He might be worth a punt though, given the lack of options up top.

Home and Away Data – Points Per Game Basis

The above tables, split into Home and Away games on a Points Per Game basis

The teams performing badly at home according to FPL Points Conceded per game are Watford, Norwich, Burnley, Wolves and Leeds.

On the other hand, Norwich, Leeds, Everton, Brentford and Burnley are performing poorly away from home. Note that Burnley Leeds and Norwich are giving up plenty of points regardless of whether they’re home or away.

The teams performing well at home according to FPL Points Scored in respect of Points Per Game are Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Southampton.

Liverpool and Man City are absolutely dominating in their home fixtures, averaging over 60 FPL Points Scored per game.

The teams performing well away from home according to total FPL Points Scored per game are Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and Wolves.

Specific Double Gameweek 28 Data For Double Gameweek Teams

Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s Double Gameweek 28 Fixtures according to the Points Scored and Points Conceded data

Here we can see that whilst Villa are not in the top five teams scoring at any position, they face opposition in the top five for points conceded to opposition Forwards (Southampton when they play away) and opposition Midfielders (Leeds at home).

With this in mind, Phillipe Coutinho (£7.4m), Jacob Ramsey (£4.8m) and one of Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) or Danny Ings (£7.7m) have the potential to do well.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s Double Gameweek 28 Fixtures according to the Points Scored and Points Conceded data

This looks like a great double for both Chelsea’s Defenders and Goalkeeper! Edouard Mendy (£6.1m) and Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) are firmly on the watchlist now, although Chelsea now don’t have a game in Gameweek 30.

Leeds

Aside from Raphinha (£6.5m) it’s difficult to recommend any Leeds players right now, especially with a new manager in charge. As he is their talisman and should be on penalties, he’s the only asset on our watchlist.

Newcastle

Newcastle’s Double Gameweek 28 Fixtures according to the Points Scored and Points Conceded data

Newcastle have found a bit of form recently, but it’s difficult to get excited about any of their assets, especially looking at the above. You could maybe take a punt on one of the Forwards given the fact they’re in the top five teams scoring FPL Points when they play at home, but even with the double, there isn’t a lot to love here.

Norwich

Aside from Teemu Pukki (£5.8m) as a punt against Brentford, there are not really any decent options here unfortunately.

Southampton

Southampton’s Double Gameweek Fixtures according to the Points Scored and Points Conceded data

The Saint’s play a team in the top five for conceding FPL Points to opposition midfielders at home (Aston Villa) and top five for conceding FPL Points to opposition Forwards on their travels (Newcastle).

James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m), Che Adams (£6.9m) and Armando Broja (£5.5m) all have the potential to do well from this set of fixtures. Adams is clearly the man in form but for an extra £1.4m you will have to see if your budget can stretch there. A word of note is that they don’t play in Gameweek 30.

Watford

Watford’s Double Gameweek 28 Fixtures according to the Points Scored and Points Conceded data

Aside from a budget Defender, Watford are a complete avoid for me right now. They’re a team to target with opposition players rather than Watford players themselves.

Wolves

Wolves’ Double Gameweek Fixtures according to the Points Scored and Points Conceded data

I think Wolves defensive assets are worth investment for this double if you need a defender. Both of these are decent fixtures and I’d back them for at least one clean sheet. Romain Says (£5m), Conor Coady (£4.8m) and Max Kilman (£4.6m) are all worth consideration. I’d also back a punt on Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) as mentioned above.

FPL Gameweek 28 Team

So after that deep dive into the data, here is the current lineup for Gameweek 28:

We have Adam Webster injured, but other than that we’re in pretty good shape. The thought of a Bench Boost in 28 or 29 is appealing to get it out of the way, but until the FA Cup games are finished we can’t make any concrete plans.

Transfers – FPL Double Gameweek 28 Strategy

Adam Webster (£4.3m) and Wout Weghorst (£6.6m) are both on the chopping block, but could sit on the bench if needs be this week. We could also look at attacking the fixtures by moving the likes of Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) and Jarrod Bowen (£7.1m) on, but this is a high risk option, with their ownership alone having the potential to drop us quickly if they haul.

I could look at moving on Sadio Mane (£11.7m) after his heroics in Gameweek 26, with a Spurs asset coming in. Be that Heung-Min Son (£10.8m) or Harry Kane (£12.3m) as a -4, I’m not sure yet.

Wolves and Chelsea defenders are on the shopping list, as well as Raphinha (£6.5m) but no concrete decisions will be made until after the press conferences later today.

Having looked at the team, I felt there was an opportunity to tick off some boxes this week. I wanted extra cover for Blank Gameweek 30 as I’m not using my Free Hit, and I wanted to use my Bench Boost chip in order to focus on my starting 11 for the rest of the season. So I looked at players that Double in 28/play in 30 and I’ve taken a -12…

Bowen – Raphinha
Mane – Son
Weghorst – Jimenez
Webster – Rudiger

This now leaves me with 9 players in Gameweek 30, with scope to add to that.

Captaincy – FPL Double Gameweek 28 Strategy

We may just stick with Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) as the ever reliable. We don’t want to fall into traps just because certain players have Double Gameweeks.
