This FPL Gameweek 36 strategy article first reviews the FPL points as a metric team after Gameweek 35. We take a quick look at the data, before moving on to the specific match data for the teams with a Double Gameweek, before we look at the squad for Double Gameweek 36.

FPL Gameweek 35 Review – FPL Strategy

This week, like a few of the weeks before this, saw the FPL Gods shine on us once more. Heung-Min Son (£11m) with yet another captaincy haul to propel us up the ranks!

This has been a bit of a theme since we decided to avoid getting Harry Kane (£12.4m) in Gameweek 30 for the Blank Gameweek. We stuck with what we had, and we’ve been on the end of positive variance ever since, especially when Spurs have been the primary captaincy option of the week.

We ended Gameweek 30 at 55k, but because we kept Son and captained him when we needed to, we’ve had five green arrows in a row and ended Gameweek 35 at 12k OR. An incredible run and the Holy Grail of a 10k finish could be in sight, a monumental achievement for this team.

Aside from the Son haul, Kelechi Iheanacho (£7m) has been an interesting pick, with a goal and an assist since we got him in despite limited minutes.

The Data – FPL Gameweek 36 Strategy

Goalkeepers

As we can see, it’s Norwich that have conceded the most FPL points to opposition Goalkeepers so far.

Brighton, Wolves, Watford, and Burnley make up the remaining teams in green.

When we look at FPL Points scored by goalkeepers, Liverpool are top, with Wolves, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs making up the top six.

Defenders

Chelsea are still top of the table for FPL Points scored by defenders, with Liverpool only 19 points behind them now in second.

Man City, Spurs and Wolves make up the top five defences scoring the most FPL points.

Norwich have conceded the most FPL Points to opposition Defenders, and Leeds, Everton, Burnley and Watford make up the remaining green teams. Wolves defenders are both scoring and conceding lots of FPL Points.

Whilst Arsenal have gone off the boil in recent weeks, they do have a decent end to the season in terms of their fixtures. Something to maybe bear in mind for those of us with their defensive assets. Unless that’s Ben White (£4.6m) who missed the West Ham game with an “unknown before the deadline” hamstring injury.

Midfielders

The Midfielder table shows Liverpool are well out on top in this position. Man City are in second, with West Ham, Man United and Chelsea making up the top five.

Leeds have conceded the most FPL points to opposition Midfield units so far.

Norwich, Brentford, Watford and Burnley make up the five teams conceding the most points to midfielders.

Forwards

Watford, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Southampton make up the top five teams for Forwards with the most FPL points so far.

A lot of these teams play two up top each week, which can sway the numbers to a certain extent. Given the fixtures, budget strikers from Crystal Palace and Leicester (if you can stomach the rotation) could be interesting plays.

Harry Kane (£12.4m) is ticking over as he should given his price tag, but is it enough? Son is upstaging him, but we also had a period where Kane was outscoring Son. It’s difficult to predict!

Man United, Everton, Norwich, Southampton and Watford are the teams conceding the most FPL points to opposition Forwards.

Leicester’s Double Gameweek is incredible, but most players will likely only get one game due to Europa Conference involvement. All eyes are on Thursday’s game to see if they progress to the final.

Home and Away Data – Points Per Game Basis

The teams performing worst at home according to FPL Points Conceded per game are Watford, Norwich, Burnley, Leeds, Wolves and Brighton.

Away from home, Norwich, Leeds, Everton, Brentford and Watford are performing poorly. Note that Watford, Leeds and Norwich are giving up plenty of points, regardless of whether they’re home or away.

The teams performing well at home according to FPL Points Scored, in respect of Points Per Game, are Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs.

Liverpool and Man City are absolutely dominating in their home fixtures, averaging over 60 FPL Points Scored per game, with Liverpool closer to 70 PPG.

The teams performing well away from home according to total FPL Points Scored per game are Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Man City and Wolves.

Specific Double Gameweek Teams Matchups

Arsenal

Arsenal score well at Goalkeeper and Midfielder when playing at home, and score well at the Midfielder position when playing away.

The Leeds matchup looks like a good one, as they are in the top five teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition Goalkeepers, Defenders and Midfielders. I’d like to think Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) can keep a clean sheet in this double, despite some injury concerns in the squad. As mentioned above, Ben White had a previously unmentioned hamstring injury for the West Ham game, so we’ll need to see if he can make it back.

Bukayo Saka (£6.7m) still offers incredible value and can hopefully continue providing us points, and we now have an eye on Eddie Nketiah (£5.5m) who appears to be starting games now, so immediately becomes a great budget option.

Aston Villa

This is a mixed bag for Villa really. Burnley presents a decent chance at a result, but they’re riding the crest of a new manager wave and will likely prove tough opposition. At home, they’re in the top five teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition Goalkeepers and Defenders.

Liverpool could likely rotate for their game against The Villains because of the FA Cup final a few days later, but they will no doubt provide a very tough matchup for Villa.

If you’re without a Free Hit, I’d be looking at the likes of Matthew Cash (£5.3m), Phillipe Coutinho (£7.1m) and maybe Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) to take advantage of the “Double Double” but otherwise I’d look elsewhere this week.

Chelsea

Chelsea, on paper, have a decent Double Gameweek here, but I’d imagine for most of their key assets this is just a single gameweek. This is because they will only have two days of rest between the Leeds game and the FA Cup final. The likes of Reece James (£6.4m), Marcos Alonso (£5.7m), Mason Mount (£7.7m) and Kai Havertz (£7.9m) are very likely to miss that second game in order to be fresh for the Cup Final.

We also face the uncertainty of Thomas Tuchel deciding he might want to play James at centre back as opposed to wing-back, which massively caps his upside. Tuchel has mentioned previously he’s tried this as he needs to manage James and keep him fresh, so a centre-back outing followed by a rest wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

Wolves will likely aim to keep the game tight, but the Leeds game should bring more joy for Chelsea attackers, as. they are in the teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition Midfielders and Forwards when they play at home. The tricky part is knowing who will play in that game!

Based on that uncertainty, I wouldn’t be bringing any in. In our team we have Mason Mount, and moving him out is an option.

Everton

Everton’s data isn’t great at all, but a surprise win over Chelsea will have their tails up. Richarlison (£7.5m) is their man in form with four goals in five games and being on penalties, he’d be the one to go for.

However, he could be subject to a three game ban from the FA for throwing a flare into the crowd after scoring against Chelsea. Keep an eye on any news of this as he’d then become a hard pass for both 36 & 37.

Much like with Villa, if you don’t have a Free Hit, you could target their players this week and hope for some results, especially away to Watford. Watford are in the top five teams conceding FPL Points to all opposition positions when they play at home. They are also fighting for their Premier League lives though, so who knows how this game will go?

Leeds

I’m really worried for Leeds now. This is an awful Double Gameweek for them and negative results here could see them go down. I’ll be avoiding Leeds players this week.

Leicester

A fantastic Double Gameweek for Leicester, but huge risk of rotation. Players like James Maddison (£6.9m) look like great options on paper, but much like Chelsea assets, this could also just be a one game Double Gameweek for most of their key assets.

They play Roma in Rome Thursday night and then Everton just two days later. The Foxes main focus right now is to qualify for that Europa Conference League final, so they will play their strongest 11 Thursday, and likely give those guys a bit of a breather against The Toffees.

Regardless, if I go for any, I’d go for attackers and not defenders despite a decent double, as Leicester have been awful defensively all season.

See what the line up is on Thursday before making your decisions, as bringing any of their assets in will be a risk.

Liverpool

Liverpool have made the Champions League Final after overcoming Villarreal on Tuesday night.

It didn’t go fully to plan however, as key players like Andrew Robertson (£7.3m) had to play almost the full 90 minutes when Klopp had potentially pencilled this game in for a rest for him. I’d imagine that whilst he plays against Spurs, he will see reduced minutes against Aston Villa.

The Spurs game will be very tough, and Villa won’t make life easy for them either. Most people will default to captaining Mo Salah (£13.3m) but this Double Gameweek isn’t a walkover.

Joel Matip (£5.2m) should be a decent budget enabler to access in this double. He doesn’t play in the Cup Competitions to keep him fresh for the league. My only slight worry is that a Saturday/Tuesday turnaround might be too close for him. I’d back him to start in all of the league games, but I know historically there have been worries about playing him back to back games too quickly in succession, so there is a chance he misses Villa, but I’d imagine that Ibrahima Konate (£5.1m) still plays the Cup Final on the Saturday.

Man City

Much like their title rivals, City are in midweek action, which will have a direct effect on our transfer plans. Their double isn’t too bad at all, and I’d expect at least one clean sheet here.

It’s the attacking assets that are difficult to get right. Phil Foden (£7.8m) was the man last week, with Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) rested ahead of the second leg against Real Madrid.

It really is a lottery, but the Champions League Semi-Final will give us a better idea of who to go for. However the lads mentioned above are the likely candidates for our team, in addition to another defender, or Ederson (£6.1m).

Norwich

Not a great double for Norwich on the face of it, but I’d imagine they score a goal or two. The only asset I’d consider here is Teemu Pukki (£6.1m), but could there now be a lack of motivation as they have nothing left to play for? Or could they be let off the shackles and play with freedom?

Spurs

Whilst this isn’t a great double on paper, Spurs have bounced back from a bit of a lull by beating Leicester 3-1, with Heung-Min Son (£11m) being responsible for some big green (and in some cases, red) arrows this week.

Liverpool’s high line could suit Son, and Arsenal have been much leakier since injuries to key players have crept in. Buying could be a high risk/high reward strategy, but the South Korean Superstar is the only one I’d be tempted by, and even then, you’re choosing him over someone like De Bruyne, who arguably has a better set of fixtures this week.

Watford

Watford Forwards were popular once upon a time ago, and this is a decent double for them. They play two teams in the top five teams for conceding FPL Points to opposition Forwards at home (Palace) and away (Everton).

With relegation a real possibility for The Hornets, you’d assume they go all out to try and stay up. However, I still think they’re too big a risk, especially when a player like Eddie Nketiah is similarly priced.

Wolves

Wolves are a hard pass for me this week. An awful double, and a team that currently have no worthwhile assets.

FPL Gameweek 36 Team

So after that deep dive into the data, here is the current lineup for Gameweek 36:

Ben White (£4.6m) is a concern for us. Unexpectedly out of the squad with a hamstring injury, we will wait on the Press Conference before making any moves. We’re also starting potentially rotation prone players in Alonso, Mount, Dewsbury-Hall and Iheanacho.

Transfers – FPL Gameweek 36 Strategy

We have two transfers and £2.1m in the bank. Wout Weghorst is someone I’m looking at moving on to free up even more cash. If I move to Nketiah, Ben White may have to be another move out by default, most likely for a City/Liverpool defender.

I’m also considering a -4 to move Mason Mount on, but he is the most likely of all Chelsea assets to get minutes in both games this week, so that one will need some additional thought.

Captaincy – FPL Gameweek 36 Strategy

Keeping it simple this week – Mo Salah (£13.3m) will very likely be the captain. Whilst he’s been quiet, a haul out of nowhere is never far away.
