FPL Gameweek 6 concluded on Sunday with Newcastle hammering Sheffield United 8-0, sending FPL teams rising up – and crashing down – the rankings.

Erling Haaland (£14.1m) was practically the unanimous choice for the armband this week, with 96% of the top 250,000 FPL managers backing him.

Son Heung-min (£9.2m) got up to 7% in second place last week, however the next most popular pick in Gameweek 6 barely scraped over 1%.

Curse of the most transferred-in player continues

Julian Alvarez (£7.0m) was a huge transfer bandwagon ahead of Gameweek 6.

More than 1.3m managers brought him in before the deadline, making him the most popular purchase in a single gameweek so far this season.

But despite being singled out for praise on Match of the Day, when Martin Keown compared him to Dennis Bergkamp, plus a sharp new haircut (see Green Arrow), owners were left unimpressed.

The Argentine came up blank in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

He had an early free-kick saved and a chance in the six-yard box went begging in a decent performance – but his expected points of 2.8 suggest he was never in line for any returns.

His failure to return continues the ongoing curse of the most transferred-in player of the week, as Hub ambassador FPL Mate pointed out.

Who will be next in line to try to break the curse? Sven Botman (£4.7m) narrowly leads the way so far, with more than 229,000 transfers in this week.

FPL Gameweek 6 injuries: Concern for Edouard

Odsonne Edouard (£5.6m) was brought into 330,000 teams ahead of Gameweek 6 after scoring four goals in five games.

But he went off at the end of the game and Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson confirmed he was ‘worried’ about his striker’s hamstring.

He also rued a lack of options in his squad, with little rotation options in midfield and up front. He told Sky Sports:

“We don’t have any players at the moment, that’s the problem. Certainly in the defence we have options which is good but when you move forward into the midfield and upfront, especially now if Odsonne Edouard’s hamstring is a problem, we just don’t have really the options that would give me a chance to give some of these players a rest.”

Declan Rice (£5.4m) suffered a back injury in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

It was also a match that saw both Leandro Trossard (£6.6m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£7.8m) miss out, while Bukayo Saka (£8.7m) was replaced in the 90th minute.

The England international was spotted limping, amid recent news of him managing an ongoing Achilles problem.

On Rice, Arteta said:

“He was really uncomfortable during the match, we had to take him out.We have to assess him. It’s strange for someone like him to come off.”

Manchester United left-back Sergio Reguilon (£4.4m) sparked concern among United fans when he was subbed off against Burnley, with United’s injury crisis in defence apparently worsening.

But Erik ten Hag said the left-back had been ‘ill’ before the match but had wanted to play, suggesting any issue should hopefully only be short-term.

Lisandro Martinez (£4.8m) was however ruled out of the game with a foot complaint.

Record-breaking Newcastle destroy Sheffield United

Newcastle became the first team in Premier League history to have eight different goalscorers in a game, excluding own-goals, according to Opta.

They blew Sheffield United away in the own back yard, scoring eight without reply.

Kieran Trippier (£6.6m) and Sven Botman (£4.7m) have been popular picks in the last two gameweeks and they rewarded owners handsomely, with 18 and 12 FPL points respectively. They combined for a goal, with Trippier setting up the centre-back’s headed effort.

Our fixture analysis by Chris Tan last week highlighted the Blades’ weakness at defending set-pieces, along with other concerning defensive weaknesses, tipping Trippier and others to profit.

And that was the case – and then some – with Trippier contributing three assists to top the table for FPL points in Gameweek 6.

But among a whole host of stars for the Magpies this week, there was a budget midfielder worth noting.

Gordon another budget midfield option as Barnes suffers injury

Pedro Neto (£5.6m) has previously been highlighted in our reviews for his strong start to the season – one year on from flopping as a popular early season pick in FPL.

The Wolves midfielder added a goal against Luton to go with his four assists. Only James Maddison (£7.9m) has scored more FPL points among midfielders, while Neto has made as many key passes as Bruno Fernandes (£8.4m).

This week though, Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon (£5.6m) staked a claim to rival him as a cut-price option.

The winger scored and assisted against Sheffield United, topping the league for big chances created, expected assists (xA) and expected points.

Despite competition from Harvey Barnes (£6.4m), Gordon has started all six league games this season. Only Bruno Guimaraes (£5.8m) has played more midfield minutes for the Magpies so far.

Gordon also started alongside Barnes in Gameweek 5, playing on the right, so Barnes starting does not necessarily rule him out of the first 11.

For the time being though, an injury to Barnes in the Sheffield United game could keep him out of contention for a while. Eddie Howe said:

“It’s an injury to his foot, just below the toe, and I think it’s quite a substantial injury. We’ve had the scans and now we’re waiting now a specialist opinion on what’s next and whether there’s surgery involved or not.”

With players like Trippier, Salah and Son all competing for places in our side, whether on a Wildcard or not, a budget midfielder like Gordon could become a key consideration in the coming weeks.

He is currently on four yellow cards however, just one away from a ban, which is worth considering before making a transfer ahead of Gameweek 7.

Jackson banned, Rodri and Gusto reds

The most popular transfer out ahead of Gameweek 6 was Nicolas Jackson (£7.0m) and his ownership is set to plummet further.

Having missed a big chance against Aston Villa, the striker picked up his fifth booking of the season. He now faces a one-match ban, which must be served in the league.

It’s a problem Mauricio Pochettino could do without, with even Domino’s Pizza poking fun at Chelsea’s lack of goals. The franchise joked it had delivered ‘about 852,609 pizzas’ since the Blues last found the back of the net.

And things got worse, as Malo Gusto (£4.3m) was sent off for a dangerous foul.

Over at the Etihad, the match between City and Nottingham Forest resembled a Royal Rumble at times.

Rodri (£5.7m) gave 10.1% of FPL managers a problem by being sent off for grabbing Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.9m) by the throat.

And Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.6m) and Ederson (£5,6m) both did a fine impression of rutting stags as their heads met, although both escaped with a yellow card.

Finally, Wolves new boy Jean-Ricner Bellagarde (£5.0m) also received his marching orders for a kick on Tom Lockyer (£4.3m) as the pair tangled on the floor.

Raya continues in goal

David Raya (£4.8m) started his third game for Arsenal in a row, strengthening belief he is set to be Arteta’s number-one goalkeeper ahead of Aaron Ramsdale (£4.9m).

Arteta has not confirmed as such, being suitably vague once again after the match. He said:

“It’s trying to play the way we want to play on the day. I made some calls and left some players on the bench.”

Raya has kept one clean sheet in two league games, making four saves and picking up two bonus points. He added a clean sheet in the 4-0 win over PSV in the Champions League.
