This FPL Gameweek 7 strategy article reviews the FPL points as a metric team for Gameweek 6 and we take a look at the data, before moving on to transfers and captaincy ahead of Gameweek 7.

Gameweek 7 Review – FPL Strategy

A small red arrow this week! 48 points takes us from 33k to 42k.

Goals from Ismaila Sarr (£6.3m), Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), Michail Antonio (£8m) and an assist from our new signing Josh King (£5.5m) were the highlights.

A last minute assist getting Joel Veltman (£4.4m) a 7-pointer wasn’t enough to stop the red arrow. As mentioned previously, it’s still worth noting that rank isn’t too important after just six weeks.

The Data – FPL Gameweek 7 Strategy

We’re now six weeks into the season so the data sample is naturally getting bigger, ahead of a proposed Wildcard for Gameweek 8.

As mentioned above, please read my introduction to using FPL points as a metric if you’re unfamiliar with this approach. This article will likely answer any questions you have.

Goalkeepers

The Metric Goalkeeper Data and the next five fixtures

As we can see, Wolves have given up the most FPL Points to opposition Goalkeepers so far. Arsenal, Norwich, West Ham and Southampton make up the remaining five.

Alisson (£6m) now sits on top of the Goalkeeper scoring charts. He is level with fellow Brazilian Ederson (£6m).

Chelsea’s Goalkeepers are also doing well. This indicates that the Premium Goalkeepers are doing well for the managers that like to pick them for their FPL teams.

Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) appears to have a couple of decent upcoming fixtures before Manchester City. Hopefully the Spaniard can start delivering for his managers.

A 14-point haul from Jose Sa (£5m) propels him into the top five scoring Goalkeepers.

After Spurs, Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) plays four of the five teams giving up the most FPL Points to opposition Goalkeepers. The Argentine number one could be worth a look if you want to spend that much on your keeper.

Defenders

Defender Metric Data and the next five fixtures

No surprises in the Points Scored table, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City topping the scoring already.

Brentford are doing very well early doors but they conceded three in a cracking game against Liverpool. Let’s see what happens in their next two tricky games.

Norwich have conceded the most FPL Points to opposition defensive units. We see Arsenal, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur making up the bottom five.

Similarly to the Goalkeeper table, we see Aston Villa playing three of the five teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition defensive units in their next five games. Villa defenders could be worth an investment perhaps?

Brighton have two good fixtures before a clash with Man City, with Chelsea’s excellent fixture swing kicking off this week as well.

Seeing Marcos Alonso (£5.9m) subbed for Ben Chilwell (£5.6m) at half time in their Champions League game throws some uncertainty into the mix though.

Midfielders

Midfielder Data and the next five fixtures

Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City midfielders have got off to a strong start here.

Everton and West Ham make up the top five in terms of Points Scored. The Toffees scored even more returns with Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.6m), Andros Townsend (£5.5m) (as we mentioned last week) and Demarai Gray (£5.8m).

Norwich, Leeds, Burnley, Newcastle and Arsenal are the teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition Midfield Units after six Gameweeks.

I’m also an advocate for targeting Norwich’s left hand side after they’ve conceded a return each week down that flank. It’s certainly something to bear in mind.

Chelsea have a good run of five fixtures here. The Blues play three of the five teams who have conceded the most FPL Points to opposition Midfielders in their next five games.

I’m also liking the look of Crystal Palace’s Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) with two goals and three assists in five games. He has a reasonable run for the next five and could be a decent budget enabler.

Forwards

Forward data and the next five fixtures

Newcastle now top of the Points Scored charts here. That’s a result of Allan Saint-Maximin’s (£6.8m) solid start to the season. Two goals and three assists mean he is the fourth highest scoring forward in the league with 35 points.

However, Newcastle’s fixtures in terms of the Metric are not great. With the plethora of options at our disposal, we may have to ignore him for now.

Michail Antonio (£8m) has scored 47 points and now faces a resilient Brentford side. The Bees have given up the second least FPL Points to opposition forwards.

Brentford play swashbuckling football though, so this could leave enough space for West Ham to capitalise.

You have to wonder how long it will be before Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) start propelling Chelsea and Manchester United into the top five here. This is particularly the case with Chelsea who have some lovely fixtures starting this week.

Both Chelsea and Leeds play three of the five teams conceding the most FPL Points to opposition Forwards in their next five games.

In terms of FPL Points conceded, Norwich have conceded the most FPL Points to opposition forwards so far. Newcastle, Leicester, Southampton and Aston Villa make up the list of five teams conceding the most.

Wolves have two more good fixtures. It was amazing to see Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) notch his first goal since returning from a terrible head injury.

Home and Away Points Per Game tables

The Points Per Game table does make for interesting reading after six weeks. For example, Wolves are performing badly at home yet doing well (for the most part) on the road, in terms of FPL Points scored/conceded.

Norwich are already the whipping boys both home and away.

Gameweek 7 Preview – FPL Strategy

So we have one Free Transfer and £3.3m in the bank. With both Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.6m) and Luke Shaw (£5.5m) injured, we have yet more issues. This is where we are prior to any transfers being made:

Two defensive issues and a creaky bench – not good!

Adam Masina (£4.4m) didn’t play again last week. Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) is probably my only trustworthy bench option right now. Despite this, the Scotsman has been left out occasionally.

My plan is to Wildcard during the International Break ahead of Gameweek 8. Therefore, I need to try and get through this week without too much of a red arrow!

Team Reveal – FPL Gameweek 7 Strategy

So it’s pretty clear we’re short at the back this week, with potentially two defenders out. The two on the bench are unlikely to play either.

I’ve seen other managers with this issue combined with problems elsewhere. This has resulted in them playing their Wildcard, but I’m not averse to making two transfers for a -4 hit to sort this out.

Normally, I wouldn’t do this pre-wildcard, but it is something I am considering if I am confident in getting returns.

The data shows me that the teams with the best fixtures this week (playing teams giving up the most FPL Points to opposition Defenders) are Aston Villa (vs Spurs), Brighton (vs Arsenal), Burnley (vs Norwich), Leicester (vs Crystal Palace) and Newcastle (vs Wolves).

Of the above five teams, Burnley have the best chance at a clean sheet based on the odds. Chelsea are on top here with a 50% chance of a clean sheet.

Transfers – FPL Gameweek 7 Strategy

Despite all of this, Burnley have been really poor defensively. They have conceded the third most Shots On Target (33), have the third highest xGC (11) and only three teams have conceded more goals than them.

If I’m considering a -4, I won’t be going for a Burnley asset.

I’ve also checked the Hub’s Prediction tool to see which defenders are projected to score the most FPL Points this week:

We see here that Chelsea defenders top the charts. I’ve been put off Marcos Alonso after his half time substitution in the Champions League.

Yet with Reece James (£5.6m) injured, I could be tempted by Cesar Azpilicueta (£6m) despite the higher price tag.

I like nailed defenders so both him and Antonio Rudiger (£5.7m) are on my radar in a team that should be keeping clean sheets more often than not.

I have the exact cash to move Adam Masina and Konstantinos Tsimikas to Antonio Rudiger and Azpilicueta so I may move on this for a -4 if it looks like price changes are imminent.

These are huge upgrades and could even postpone the Wildcard for The Metric Team. If there is a price rise, I can drop down to Andreas Christensen (£5m), who should also get plenty of game time whilst James is out.

I’ll be waiting for news on Luke Shaw before deciding my final moves though.

Captaincy – FPL Gameweek 7 Strategy

Captaincy is likely going on Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) again, as I’ll always put faith in my premium assets.

I will try and update this article before the Saturday deadline, but it could be that I don’t make any moves until very close to the deadline as I wait for news.
