<p>This FPL  strategy article will review the season the team has had, review the final data, and look back to an article penned in pre-season to see if any of the thoughts in that panned out as expected.</p>

<h2>FPL Season Review &#8211; FPL Strategy</h2>
<p>So just like that, season over! What a blast it&#8217;s been as well. I&#8217;ve been absent over the last couple of weeks due to work commitments and family holidays, but the team has had a great end to the season.</p>
<p>After a score of 57 in the final gameweek, we couldn&#8217;t quite make the Holy Grail of a top 10k finish. We ended up finishing the season ranked 14,810, which I actually think is a remarkable finish given this is an experiment that just uses the data presented to us to target players/teams.</p>

<p>Our transfers in were <strong>Sadio Mane (£11.8m) and Ryan Sessegnon (£4.4m) </strong>for <strong>Ruben Dias (£6.1m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.1m). </strong>Despite being up on the hit, it wasn&#8217;t enough to get that 4-digit finish, but a pleasing end to the season at 14k nonetheless.</p>

<h2>The Data &#8211; FPL Strategy</h2>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Goalkeepers</h3>

<p>As we can see, it&#8217;s Norwich who ended the season conceding the most FPL points to opposition goalkeepers. This makes sense as they failed to score in 22 of the 38 games this season.</p>
<p>Arsenal, Wolves, Watford, and Burnley make up the remaining teams in green.</p>
<p>When we look at FPL Points scored by goalkeepers, Liverpool are top, with Wolves, Man City, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Spurs making up the top six. <strong>Alisson (£6.1m) </strong>topped the scoring charts for goalkeepers with 176 points.</p>
<p>A premium priced goalkeeper, £6m whilst setting you back more than we normally like to, would&#8217;ve assured you a safe spot in your team for the season. Naturally, this blocks other Liverpool Triple Ups however.</p>
<p>You have to go down to <strong>Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) </strong>as the highest scoring £4.5m goalkeeper option when the season started. 135 points isn&#8217;t too shabby at all, but Arsenal collapsed in the back end of the season, with their last clean sheet in Gameweek 29.</p>
<p>14 bonus points over the course of the season was second on to Alisson. However this was definitely a year for the &#8216;keepers at £5m and above if you wanted a set and forget.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Defenders</h3>

<p>Chelsea top the table for FPL Points scored by defenders, with Liverpool in second.</p>
<p>Man City, Spurs and Wolves make up the top five defences scoring the most FPL points.</p>
<p>Norwich (somewhat unsurprisingly) conceded the most FPL Points to opposition defenders, and Leeds, Everton, Burnley and Watford make up the remaining green teams.</p>
<p>Wolves defenders both scoring well and conceding lots of FPL Points.</p>
<p>Premium defenders, much like goalkeepers, are the order of the day in terms of Total Points scored. <strong>Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m), Joao Cancelo (£7.2m) and Andy Robertson (£7.3m) </strong>are our top scoring players.</p>
<p>It was rare to see a defender get over 200 points in a season before Alexander-Arnold, but this is the second time in three seasons he&#8217;s done it now, surely confirming he&#8217;ll start next season at £8m.</p>
<p>Cancelo notched his first 200 point season as well, so it&#8217;s likely we&#8217;ll see a price increase there too.</p>
<p><strong>Reece James (£6.5m) </strong>ends the season as the tenth highest scoring defender, despite only making 26 appearances and 4 as a sub, due to injury/rest.</p>
<p>He tops the &#8220;Points per 90&#8221; metric above both Robertson and TAA, so if he can stay fit for all of next season, you&#8217;d think he&#8217;s a must own.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Midfielders</h3>

<p>The midfielder table shows Liverpool just edged out Man City are in second following a strong end of season from the City boys. West Ham, Chelsea Arsenal and Spurs make up the top six.</p>
<p>Leeds conceded the most FPL points to opposition midfield units.</p>
<p>Norwich, Man United, Watford and Burnley make up the five teams that conceded the most points to midfielders.</p>
<p>Our top five scorers at this position were Mo Salah, Heung-Min Son, Jarrod Bowen, Kevin de Bruyne and Sadio Mane. Bowen aside, all premium options in terms of price.</p>
<p>Looking at points scored from Gameweek 28 onwards, Salah fell off a cliff, scoring only 56 points in this timeframe.</p>
<p>Son scored 120 of his 256 points in those last 11 weeks, with KDB scoring 94 of his 196 in that timeframe as well.</p>
<p>Jumping off of Salah at the right time was crucial for a decent finish this season, with maybe FOMO and EO playing a big part of the reason people held onto him.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Forwards</h3>

<p>Watford, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Southampton make up the top five teams for forwards with the most FPL points. Interestingly this is the only position where these clubs don&#8217;t feature at all in the top five FPL forwards.</p>
<p>When you break this down, this is due the spread of points of these teams considering the top scoring forward at each club:</p>
<p><strong>Watford:</strong></p>
<p>Emmanuel Dennis &#8211; 134 points (38.5% of Watford Forward Points Scored)</p>
<p><strong>Newcastle:</strong></p>
<p>Allan Saint-Maximin &#8211; 116 points (35.8%)</p>
<p><strong>Crystal Palace:</strong></p>
<p>Edouard &#8211; 87 points (30.7%)</p>
<p><strong>Leicester:</strong></p>
<p>Jamie Vardy &#8211; 133 points (46.9%)</p>
<p><strong>Southampton:</strong></p>
<p>Che Adams &#8211; 103 points (38%)</p>
<p>Leicester aside (and even Vardy missed big chunks of the season), there was no real Talisman here, from the top scoring teams.</p>
<p>Considering that the top five scoring forwards in the game are not playing for these clubs, it shows you how difficult that forward was to get right this season.</p>
<p><strong>Harry Kane (£12.4m) </strong>ended the season as top scoring forward with a real second half comeback.</p>
<p>He&#8217;d only scored 45 points between Gameweek 1-19! But then he scored 147 points between Gameweek 20-38 to take the crown.</p>
<p>Burnley, Everton, Norwich, Southampton and Watford are the teams that conceded the most FPL points to opposition forwards.</p>

<h2>Home and Away Data &#8211; Points Per Game Basis</h2>

<p>The teams that performed worst at home according to FPL Points Conceded per game are Watford, Norwich, Burnley, Leeds and Wolves.</p>
<p>Away from home, Norwich, Leeds, Everton, Southampton and Watford performed poorly. Note that Watford, Leeds and Norwich gave up plenty of points, regardless of whether they were home or away.</p>
<p>Note that at home, Liverpool conceded on average a paltry 4.1 PPG to opposition defenders. You were not getting much at all from Anfield!</p>
<p>This is likely in part because Liverpool went the entire campaign without failing to score at Home. West Ham was the only other club able to do that.</p>
<p>The teams that performed well at home according to FPL Points Scored were Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Spurs.</p>
<p>Liverpool and Man City are absolutely dominating in their home fixtures, averaging over 60 FPL Points Scored per game, with Liverpool at just over 65 PPG.</p>
<p>The teams performing well away from home according to total FPL Points Scored per game are Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Man City and Wolves.</p>
<p><strong>Note that these tables are where most of the starting points for team decisions were made.</strong></p>
<p>We opted to keep Son Heung-min over Harry Kane completely based on the Points Scored tables, and that saw a huge rise in rank during the range of Gameweeks 31 (45k) to 38 (14k).</p>
<p>For sure we saw plenty of variance go our way, but any one finishing in the top 0.5% will have luck on their side.</p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>Comparing this season with Last Season</h2>
<p>In pre-season, I wrote <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fpl-strategy-using-fpl-points-as-a-metric">this article</a> reflecting on the previous season data and how that could be split into percentages of our budget.</p>
<p>Last season, just over 31,000 FPL Points were scored. This season, 31,384 FPL Points were scored. So we&#8217;re in similar territory.</p>
<p>Last season, the breakdown of these points was as follows:</p>
<ul>
<li>9.2% of those were scored at the goalkeeper position</li>
<li>33.1% were scored by defenders</li>
<li>43.2% were scored by midfielders</li>
<li>14.5% were scored by forwards</li>
</ul>
<p>This season:</p>
<ul>
<li>8.68% of those were scored at the goalkeeper position</li>
<li>33.69% were scored by defenders</li>
<li>44.05% were scored by midfielders</li>
<li>13.59% were scored by forwards</li>
</ul>
<p>So again, we&#8217;re seeing a similar pattern of points spread. Reductions in points scored by Goalkeepers and Forwards, with increases for Defenders and Midfielders.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll go into this in more detail for the pre-Ssason article in July/August, but we will use this when we decide our squad structure again.</p>
