<p>Many FPL managers have put a lot of work into transfer planning and arrive at the festive period well prepared.</p>
<p>Whilst those preparations have likely been thwarted by the most recent breakout of COVID-19, don&#8217;t despair. Good preparations can still come in handy, even if adaptation to the COVID situation might be needed.</p>
<p>I fully understand that it can be tempting to just stick to your original and well-founded plan. However, adaptability is more important than ever when the conditions are so rapidly changing.</p>

<p>A lot of <strong>FPL </strong>managers follow price changes closely and aim to gain as much <strong>team value</strong> as possible. Particularly earlier in the season. However, in the current situation, the risk of cost exceeding the benefit is too high in my opinion.</p>
<p>Under normal circumstances it’s acceptable to make early transfers to avoid being priced out of a planned move. Now I would advise against that.</p>
<p>As we have witnessed this past week, things can change very quickly. Sudden postponements are almost impossible to foresee. I saw many early transfers last gameweek to beat price changes only for <strong>FPL </strong>managers to regret it.</p>

<h2>Christmas and COVID | Focus on What you can Control</h2>
<p>My advice is to take a step back and <strong>think through what you can and cannot affect</strong>.</p>
<p>We’re unable to influence COVID among Premier League players and whether games go ahead as planned or get postponed. There&#8217;s no need to beat yourself up if you own players that suddenly won’t play.</p>
<p>What can be influenced, though, is how we <em>relate</em> to the situation. It’s wise to do as much as we can to field as many players as possible in any given gameweek.</p>
<p><strong>Ivan Toney</strong> <strong>(£6.6m)</strong> testing positive on a match day in Gameweek 15 was totally out of our control, but those with good bench cover surely didn’t worry too much.</p>
<p>Instead of focusing on building team value, <strong>holding transfers</strong> can be seen as an insurance plan to compensate for any unexpected news. Even if it means a loss of £0.3m.</p>

<p>We all choose when to make our transfers, what type of players we invest in and the extent of own <strong>squad depth</strong>. We can choose between a front eight of nailed mid-priced players, or a few bench fodders alongside a couple of premiums. I certainly know what I prefer nowadays.</p>
<p>It may feel like a lottery, but we do have the ability to <strong>minimise the forces of luck</strong> by focusing on what we are actually able to influence.</p>
<p>In my opinion, it’s <strong>hard to justify making early transfers in the current situation</strong>, and I have heard very few solid arguments to justify prioritising team value over choosing players that will actually play each gameweek.</p>
<p>Wait until you have as much information as possible, then make your moves.</p>
