When it comes to cheap FPL options, the promoted teams are often the best place to look.
Promoted players can be unknown quantities for FPL. You don’t have last season’s points <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> to refer to when making your picks.
But that doesn’t mean you should avoid them, as there is usually value to be found. <a href="https://www.squawka.com/en/">Squawka</a> has taken a look at the most-selected newly promoted players and given a verdict in each case.

<h3>Harry Winks &#8211; Leicester City</h3>

Harry Winks is the most-owned player among the newly-promoted sides, at 13.7% ownership in FPL. 
With two goals and no assists in 45 Championship appearances last season, Winks’ popularity is explained by the fact he’s one of few £4.5m midfielders who can expect to regularly start.
So if you’re only signing him to afford Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) or Erling Haaland (£15.0m), fine &#8211; although you could just as easily buy Lucas Bergvall (£4.5m) in the hope he breaks through at Spurs. For any other reason, avoid.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis is the second-most owned defender worth £4.0m – the lowest price in FPL. 
Just over one in 10 FPL managers have the centre-back in their team, and he looks set to be an ever-present for Southampton, missing just one game after his Championship debut last season.
But defence wasn’t Southampton’s main strength last season in the Championship &#8211; the Saints had 64 goals conceded (14th), 52.6 xG conceded (sixth), 14 clean sheets (sixth).
So is Harwood-Bellis another budget-enabler? Even to those tempted by his price we’re saying avoid. 
There are more regularly-starting options among £4m defenders than there are £4.5m midfielders.

In Wout Faes’ first Premier League season in 2022/23, the Belgian started 31 games for Leicester. 
He scored one goal and provided two assists, alongside seven clean sheets, for a grand total of 78 points. 
However, that points tally was brought down by four yellow cards, one red and two own goals – both in that game against Liverpool.
He looked more sure-footed in the Championship last season and has grown as a player. 
Faes is a threat from set pieces with both of his Championship goals last season coming from headers. 
You also get a guaranteed starter in Faes, who only earned five yellow cards across the season in 2023/24 with no suspensions. 
As far as £4.0m defenders go, Faes and his centre-back partner Jannik Vestergaard (£4.0m) are good options to sign.

Leicester conceded the fewest goals in the Championship last season and Vestergaard recorded 3.12 xG, the most of any promoted defender. 
You could also choose to gamble on Valentin Barco (£4.0m) breaking into Brighton’s line-up after his impressive pre-season (though Fabian Hürzeler’s decision to bench him v Everton thwarted many an FPL manager, given his 23.2% TSB).

FYI: Faes’ Leicester teammate Danny Ward (£4.0m) and Ipswich forward Freddie Ladapo (£4.5m) are the next most-selected promoted players (2.6% and 2.1%) on the list. 
We’re skipping the detail on this pair because they’re essentially burner picks – not expected to play, but the cheapest in their positions.

<h3>Jamie Vardy &#8211; Leicester City</h3>

Thanks to his goal vs Tottenham, Jamie Vardy is now among the most popular promoted players in FPL (2.2% TSB). 
Even at the age of 37 and with reduced playing time, Vardy is still dangerous. 
His non-penalty xG last season was 0.74 per 90 minutes, the best record in the Championship. In real terms he scored 18 goals in just 1,770 minutes with 31 shots on target.
But it’s Leicester’s circumstances that make it hard to argue against signing Vardy. 
Patson Daka (£5.5m) has been ruled out for “a few months” and Leicester’s PSR situation seems to have complicated their transfer window. 
Right now, Stephy Mavididi (£5.5m) is the main threat to Vardy’s minutes. 
If that puts you off, the two main £5.5m FWD alternatives are Brighton’s Joao Pedro (£5.5m) and Southampton’s Adam Armstrong (£5.5m), who took most shots on target in the Championship last season and recorded the highest xG (23.55).
