Viktor Gyokeres has joined Arsenal from Sporting after scoring 97 goals in 102 games for the Portuguese club &#8211; but how will he do in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season?

<h2>Viktor Gyokeres: Club history and Sporting stats</h2>
Gyokeres joined Brighton from Swedish side Brommapojkarna aged 19 but only made a handful of senior appearances.
Loans at St Pauli, Swansea and Coventry hardly gave the Seagulls an indication of world-class potential.
After scoring three in 19 league games for Coventry, he signed a permanent deal in the summer of 2021.
He managed 43 goals in 116 appearances for the Championship club, including 21 in his last season &#8211; the second best tally in the league.
It was enough to convince Portuguese side Sporting to part with a record €20m fee &#8211; and it was here where he really impressed.
Gyokeres had a superb record in Portugal, registering 97 goals in 102 appearances.
He helped Sporting to back-to-back league titles, becoming the top scorer with 29 and 39 goals.

<h2>How will Gyokeres adapt to the Premier League?</h2>
Gyokeres hasn&#8217;t got to score many to beat Arsenal&#8217;s top scorer last season.
Kai Havertz managed nine goals in 2024/25 &#8211; a number Gyokeres would hope to comfortably pass in his debut season.
But there is a long list of  strikers from the Portuguese league who failed to replicate their form when moving to one of Europe&#8217;s five top leagues.
Darwin Nunez is one such example, having joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022.
The Uruguayan scored 26 in 28 games in his final Primeira Liga campaign but in three Premier League seasons, he has managed just 25.
<h3>Goalscoring rate encouraging and penalty potential &#8211; but fewer shots expected</h3>
While it&#8217;s unlikely Gyokeres will keep up his goalscoring rate in England&#8217;s top flight, his minutes per goal compares well with some of the league&#8217;s top forwards of recent years.
He also has experience in the Champions League &#8211; and while his underlying numbers were not as impressive, he still scored six in eight matches.
Internationally, his 15 goals in 26 appearances further supports his adaptability.
This included a hat-trick against Manchester City, albeit two came from the penalty spot.
Whether he takes penalties ahead of Bukayo Saka will have an influence on his potential. A total of 27 of his Sporting goals were spot-kicks &#8211; over a quarter &#8211; and he missed just one.

And it looks like he&#8217;ll at least be in the mix to take them, judging by Mikel Arteta&#8217;s <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fpl-pre-season-results-guide">pre-season</a> comments:
<blockquote>“Well, I’m sure that he will step in if they allow him to do so, because as you say he’s been very consistent and he’s scored many goals, but we have some other penalty takers, really good ones as well.
&#8220;So they will resolve it themselves and if not I will intervene in the right moment.”</blockquote>
Penalties aside, the Swedish international may find it harder to come by opportunities generally. He averaged 4.2 shots per game last season, while Erling Haaland had the most per start in the Premier League at 3.48.
But he should be up to the challenge of the league&#8217;s physicality &#8211; and he offers creative potential to Mikel Arteta&#8217;s side too, having picked up seven assists in 2023/24.
<h3>Selected Primeira Liga strikers: Minutes per goal</h3>
Bournemouth&#8217;s Evanilson had an encouraging first season in the Premier League, scoring 10. He managed 13 in his final year for Porto.

<h2>How many goals will Gyokeres score for Arsenal?</h2>
Spread betting odds from Spreadex &#8211; collated by Hub partner site <a href="https://www.notonlyfpl.co.uk/">Not Only FPL</a> &#8211; have provided an initial indication of Gyokeres&#8217; potential.
At the time of writing, they estimated he would score around 16 league goals, four ahead of Saka.
Spreadex was yet to price up Liverpool&#8217;s Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak amid uncertainty over whether the latter will join the Reds, but Gyokeres&#8217; goals tally was the third best behind Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland.
No assists odds had been released to provide a full assessment of his goal involvements potential.
There&#8217;s also the issue of Havertz and how many minutes he will take off Gyokeres.
The German has been in good pre-season form, contributing a goal and two assists, and it&#8217;s not out of the question that he could start some games amid a busy fixture schedule and while Gyokeres settles in.
Early substitutions could be a factor too.
Spreadex was yet to price up Havertz&#8217;s goal involvements, so it&#8217;s early days.
FPL managers will therefore be keen to see how Gyokeres performs in the Gunners&#8217; final pre-season matches before locking him into their teams.

<h2>Can we afford to wait to see how Gyokeres does?</h2>
Gyokeres is likely to be well owned come Gameweek 1 and is worth considering &#8211; but the Gunners&#8217; fixtures offer a chance to monitor how he settles.
They rank 19th for overall fixture difficulty up to Gameweek 6, with Leeds (H) in Gameweek 2 the only green-rated match-up according to the Hub&#8217;s <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fixture-ticker">fixture ticker</a>.
First up is a reunion with ex-Sporting head coach Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford &#8211; a storyline that will be centre-stage on the opening weekend.
<h2>How much is Gyokeres in FPL?</h2>
FPL released Gyokeres&#8217; price on Monday (July 28).
He will cost £9.0m &#8211; the same as established Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins and £1.0m cheaper than Saka.
This price is £0.5m higher than Liverpool&#8217;s big-money signings Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike but likely takes account of the fact he could be on penalties.
It feels about right, although greater assurances over the Gunners&#8217; spot-kick taker would help us better assess whether he is a more enticing option than Saka.
