<h2>Lampard&#8217;s Managerial History</h2>
<p>This article will provide a balanced overview as to whether Everton are likely to experience imminent success following Lampard&#8217;s appointment and how that translates to their FPL assets from a predominantly tactical perspective.</p>
<p>Lampard&#8217;s time at Chelsea was mixed.</p>
<p>He did very well in his first season to get them into the top four, competing with both a transfer ban and an extremely inexperienced and young squad. However, the period prior to his sacking was tricky to say the least.</p>
<p>The slump left Chelsea ninth in the league, with Lampard losing five out of his last eight games. What was particularly concerning, however, were the performances at the back end of his reign. The section below goes through these flaws and how he&#8217;s likely to eradicate them with Everton.</p>

<h2>Tactical Analysis of Frank Lampard</h2>
<p>Lampard set up Chelsea in a 4-3-3 often with two N0. 8&#8217;s as opposed to a double pivot system. He used <strong>Jorginho</strong> as the lone pivot in the No. 6 role, <strong>N&#8217;golo Kante</strong> as a box to box No. 8 with <strong>Mason Mount</strong> being the more attacking No. 8 out the two.</p>

<h3><strong>Problems</strong></h3>
<p>Firstly, and arguably his biggest problem; the <strong>lack of central coverag</strong>e.</p>
<p>On the ball, Chelsea would often revert to building with a back three with the No. 6 forming the third centre back. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with that at all, Liverpool have done it with Jordan Henderson this season and have been very successful. However, it&#8217;s what Lampard did after this initial phase that created many problems.</p>
<p>He wanted to use his No. 8&#8217;s in a similar role to the one in which he played himself. He tried to use them both in almost a front-five, acting as second strikers. This meant that neither the 8&#8217;s or the full backs (which we will come onto later) occupied the central space in order to help build play. Arguably the area of the pitch where you need to be the most compact in, <strong>Chelsea had no one</strong>.</p>
<p>Simply reference his first Premier League game against Manchester Utd, where Chelsea defended with two blocks (one which pressed aggressively and the other being the defensive line), which is unheard of.</p>
<p>This meant the opposition team were consistently able to create a central numeric advantage, forcing Chelsea to shift the ball to the full-backs (in this case wing-backs as it is now a back give) and build from there.</p>
<p>Which is what caused Chelsea&#8217;s next problem. Normally the wing-back would be positioned high up the field in order to &#8220;gain territory&#8221; by pinning the opposition&#8217;s winger. However, as previously mentioned, Chelsea didn&#8217;t have the central capacity with which to build with, hence the wing-backs were forced to retreat into the defensive line to build.</p>
<p><strong>Given Lampard&#8217;s time off and the fact he&#8217;s more experienced, I expect him to be well aware of his managerial flaws and to at least partially eradicate them during his reign at Everton.</strong></p>
<h3></h3>
<h3><strong>Strengths</strong></h3>
<p>You can expect a <strong>surge in goals from Everton</strong>.</p>
<p>Teams that press high often have that capacity, and elements of Lampard&#8217;s initial press is very good. The 4-3-3 converts to a 4-4-2 off the ball with the two central midfielders looking to ensure the opposition&#8217;s No. 6 and deeper No. 8 are given a short amount of time on the ball. The two upfront force the ball to go wide to the full backs, resulting in an aggressive press which aims to steal the ball rather than cut passing lanes.</p>
<p>The press as a whole neutralises the ability of the opposition&#8217;s six players to build out from the back, which in turn requires them to go long. Lampard&#8217;s side can then win the ball back much easier without over half the team having to exert much effort. They can then start to build again quickly.</p>
<p>Lampard used <strong>Tammy Abraham</strong> well at Chelsea as a target man. <strong>Dominic Calvert-Lewin</strong> has an extremely similar skill set to him, and is arguably a better player. As such I expect Lampard to employ a similar system to aid Calvert-Lewin. Lampard&#8217;s sides use fast horizontal circulation, which means the full backs are often able to overlap into large gaps of space to provide a multitude of crosses.</p>
<p>Again, another benefit for Calvert-Lewin and a good avenue to create space for Everton.</p>
<p>Finally, the fluidity of the Chelsea front five was commendable, and a system like this would be beneficial to <strong>Dele Alli</strong> specifically, but is good for Everton&#8217;s general attacking play as well. Alli will be able to run inside channels consistently and find himself in and around the box. The fluidity also means he will have less of a responsibility to help create from deeper roles, which isn&#8217;t what he likes doing or best at.</p>

<h2>Lampard&#8217;s Impact on FPL Assets</h2>
<p>Most of the reasoning can be derived from the analysis above.</p>
<p><strong>Dominic Calvert Lewin (£7.9m)</strong> &#8211; He is the asset that looks to be the best one to go for. Lampard&#8217;s fondness for using a target man and a multitude of crosses in games bodes incredibly well for Calvert-Lewin.</p>
<p><strong>Dele Alli (£6.2m)</strong> &#8211; If Alli can learn from Lampard&#8217;s genius as a supporting second striker, and is selected as the more attacking No. 8, then we could see him flourish. At his price point he would be a great facilitator for the rest of your squad. Plus, as we&#8217;ve seen before, he&#8217;s got the capacity to produce a high level of attacking output. Nonetheless, he&#8217;s still a <strong>wait and see FPL asset</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Demarai Gray (£5.5m)</strong> and <strong>Richarlison (£7.4m)</strong> &#8211; With Lampard very likely to employ the 4-3-3, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is almost certain to be the central striker. In times like this, Richarlison has often shifted to the left, the position which Demarai Gray is currently occupying. Given that both are likely to be favoured over <strong>Andros Townsend</strong>, I&#8217;d expect one to shift to the right.</p>
<p>As such, I wouldn&#8217;t purchase either of them but wouldn&#8217;t be selling either for at least one Gameweek.</p>
<p><strong>Everton Defensive assets</strong> &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t really be considering them at the moment. Both Lampard in his reign at Chelsea and Everton in recent times have shown signs of <strong>defensive fragility</strong>. Combine this with the fact there&#8217;s many other better options out there currently, and Everton don&#8217;t have a favourable long term run; it&#8217;s not worth the investment.</p>

<h2>Lampard at Everton &#8211; Conclusion</h2>
<p>I hope this article has shown you that whilst Lampard clearly had problems in his reign at Chelsea, Everton fans and FPL managers have reason to be optimistic about his latest managerial appointment. Based on the analysis above, it seems likely Lampard can improve on Benitez&#8217; reign.</p>
<p>The full extent of the discrepancy between the sides under different managers remains to be seen, but like I said; there&#8217;s cause for optimism (as there always is in life) and Everton assets should certainly not be overlooked. Especially with the next three fixtures being <strong>Newcastle, Leeds and Southampton,</strong> respectively.</p>
<p>Dominic Calvert Lewin is the one to acquire, the other assets are either holds for a week to see what you are getting or assets to avoid.</p>
