Brentford forward Ivan Toney has been given an immediate eight-month ban from football after admitting 232 breaches of betting rules, the Football Association (FA) has confirmed today (Wednesday, May 17).
The Bees&#8217; talisman, who has scored 20 goals and assisted four in the Premier League this season, will not be eligible for a return to action until January 17, 2024.
A popular pick in Fantasy Premier League and other fantasy formats, Toney is in 26.4% of FPL teams &#8211; although his ownership among the top 10k is significantly lower, at 5%.

<h2>Ivan Toney ban: Why was he banned?</h2>
Toney was charged with breaching FA betting rules back in November, however it was not until Tuesday that a hearing was held.
The FA released a statement on Wednesday afternoon, confirming the decision of an independent panel.
The <a href="https://www.thefa.com/news/2023/may/17/ivan-toney-suspended-170523">statement</a> read:
<blockquote>&#8220;Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months, which runs up to and including 16 January 2024, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules.
&#8220;The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232.
&#8220;His sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing. He is permitted to return to training only with his club for the final four months of his suspension starting from 17 September 2023.
&#8220;The independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and The FA will wait to review them before commenting further.&#8221;</blockquote>
<h3>Brentford statement</h3>
Brentford released a short statement following the announcement, which read:
<blockquote>&#8220;Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps.&#8221;</blockquote>

<h2>Ivan Toney ban: Impact on Brentford and FPL</h2>
Toney has been instrumental for Brentford this season, scoring 20 of their 54 goals.
He has been involved in 51% of their goals while he&#8217;s been on the pitch, with an expected goal involvement of 27.4.
With just two games of the season to go for the Bees, the main impact of Toney&#8217;s absence will be felt next season.

Brentford will likely be looking to strengthen their options up front ahead of the new campaign.
But with Toney missing out with a reported hamstring problem in FPL Gameweek 36, we had an insight into how manager Thomas Frank will set up his side in the meantime.
Yoane Wissa came into the starting 11 alongside Bryan Mbeumo and Kevin Schade in a front three.
Wissa and Mbeumo were both on target in the 2-0 win over West Ham, with Mbeumo leading the <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> with an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.09.
Mbeumo has 14 goal involvements in the league this season, through seven goals and seven assists. He is likely to be on penalties with Toney out of the picture.
Wissa has played around half the minutes of Mbeumo &#8211; usually coming on from the bench &#8211; but has six goals and assisted three, overperforming his xG of 4.78.
Cameroon international Mbeumo has, in contrast, underperformed his xG, which sits at 10.1.

Schade represents a work in progress, with the 21-year-old German yet to score for his club.
Wissa and Mbeumo will be the main players to try to fill the void left by Toney for the remainder of the season then &#8211; but whether they attract much fantasy attention is questionable.
