The January transfer window closed for Premier League clubs on Monday – but what were the key moves for Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

Antoine Semenyo (Manchester City)

Semenyo earned a move to Pep Guardiola’s team from Bournemouth, having scored 10 and assisted five for the Cherries this season.

He’s made a strong start to his City career, scoring two league goals in three matches.

And while he is no longer as assured of minutes as he was while Bournemouth’s talisman, the early signs are encouraging.

He’s completed 90 minutes in all three league matches, although his lack of availability in the Champions League has meant he’s been fresh.

European matches restart for City in March but until then at least, Semenyo looks likely to get plenty of minutes.

No one in Guardiola’s squad has registered more expected goals (xG) than his 1.01 since Semenyo joined.

Marc Guehi (Manchester City)

Guehi is another player who was nailed for minutes at his former club.

The ex-Crystal Palace defender went straight into City’s starting 11 in Gameweek 23, helping lessen the team’s defensive injury crisis.

At £5.2m, Guehi is one of the cheaper regular City defenders and FPL managers who owned him before his transfer should be happy to keep hold of him.

He is the fourth highest-scoring defender in the game, on 114 points, with attacking over-performance – two goals and four assists from 4.2 expected goal involvements (xGI) – helping him to a bumper score.

His clean sheet chances should be improved now, with City’s expected goals conceded (xGC) stronger than Palace’s. He should also retain his place in the lineup for now.

Tammy Abraham (Aston Villa)

Abraham went straight into Villa’s starting 11 in Gameweek 24 after joining the club for the second time in his career – and had a goal disallowed against Brentford.

The English striker has had spells at Roma, AC Milan and Besiktas since leaving Chelsea in 2021.

He started life in Serie A well, scoring 27 in 53 in all competitions for Roma but his performances declined afterwards, while a serious knee injury in 2023 hampered his progress.

A loan at Milan saw him score 10 in 44 appearances but he was not a regular starter. Roma eventually sold him to Turkish club Besiktas, where he netted 13 in 26 games.

How he will perform back in the Premier League is uncertain – but the wider FPL implication is his impact on Ollie Watkins’ minutes.

Abraham’s latest debut came after Watkins was left out of the squad with a hamstring issue. It was not thought to be serious, so the two could soon be battling for minutes.

The new forward’s £6.0m price tag could appeal but when both of Villa’s frontmen are fit, their minutes could be uncertain enough to make both ones to avoid.

Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa)

Luiz is another former Villan to rejoin the club, signed to ease Unai Emery’s shortage of midfielders.

The Brazilian had an uninspiring loan spell at Nottingham Forest this season, having failed to cement his place in the Juventus team since leaving Villa Park.

Set-pieces and penalties helped him to nine goals and five assists in the 2023/24 season and if he can take back dead-ball duties, he could once again be a consideration at just £4.9m.

The signs were good in Gameweek 24. Luiz played the full 90 minutes, completed five key passes and took six of Villa’s 12 corners.

He is one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Jorgen Strand Larsen (Crystal Palace)

Strand Larsen could be an intriguing option as Palace’s new number nine, having joined from Wolves on deadline day.

The Norwegian has struggled for form and regular minutes this season, scoring once in 22 appearances.

But Palace will be hoping for performances more like his debut Premier League campaign, when he was on target 14 times.

Strand Larsen could prove a bargain at £6.1m but could face competition from Jean-Philippe Mateta – if the Frenchman is fit.

Media reports emerged after Mateta’s move to Milan fell through that he could require surgery for an ongoing knee issue. An operation would immediately boost Strand Larsen’s potential.

Pascal Gross (Brighton)

Players rejoining their old clubs was a running theme of the window and Brighton joined the bandwagon by welcoming back Gross, 18 months after selling him to Borussia Dortmund.

The versatile midfielder has started every match since Gameweek 21, playing the majority of minutes (357/360).

He got on the scoresheet against Everton in Gameweek 24, when he also earned defensive contribution points.

Priced at £5.5m, Gross could be an FPL option. Brighton’s immediate fixtures are not strong however, ranking 17th over the next five on the Hub’s fixture ticker.

Tyrique George (Everton)

George is listed as a £4.8m in FPL, which could be appealing if David Moyes hands him regular minutes.

The Chelsea loanee, 19, comes into the Toffees squad amid Jack Grealish suffering a fractured foot.

Dwight McNeil was close to a transfer to Palace, which would have further boosted the teenager’s minutes, but he should still get plenty of opportunities on the wing or up front.

For now, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is a more assured bet at £4.9m.

Rayan (Bournemouth)

Rayan is expected to replace Semenyo at Bournemouth but may be gradually introduced into the Cherries’ team despite their attacking players’ injuries.

The 19-year-old Brazilian recorded an assist on debut in Gameweek 24, coming off the bench to set up Alex Scott’s late goal.

Highly rated in his homeland, Rayan scored 14 goals in the Brazilian league in 2025. Replicating this in the Premier League is a different matter but FPL managers should monitor his early impact.

James Ward-Prowse (Burnley)

Set-piece specialist was on the bench for the Clarets’ 3-0 loss at Sunderland after signing on loan from West Ham.

A Burnley midfielder will not be on many FPL managers’ radars – but should Ward-Prowse get a run in the team, he could give his new club a boost from an attacking perspective.

No team has a worse xG than Burnley (20.3). Could set-pieces hold the key to Scott Parker’s side improving?

Oscar Bobb (Fulham)

Bobb last played for City in December, with a hamstring injury delaying his Fulham debut.

The Norwegian was an expensive acquisition for the Cottagers, who reportedly paid around £27m to sign him.

The main FPL takeaway is how he could impact on the in-form Harry Wilson’s minutes – especially given Fulham’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) players are also back in the mix.

Wilson is a hold for now but could become a sell if his gametime reduces.

One for the summer: Jeremy Jacquet (Liverpool)

Liverpool arguably could have benefited from some defensive depth in January but their only signing will not be completed until the summer.

Jacquet is a 20-year-old centre-back, bought from Rennes for £60m after intense speculation he was close to joining Chelsea.

The rising star will remain at the French club until the summer, at which point he will compete with Ibrahima Konate if the Frenchman remains at Anfield.

Notable Premier League transfers out

West Ham’s relegation battle was made tougher with the depature of playmaker Lucas Paqueta, who has returned to Brazil.

While it looks to be a two-way battle for the number nine position at Villa, new arrival Abraham won’t have to compete with Donyell Malen, who joined Roma. On-loan Leon Bailey was recalled from the same club.

Brajan Gruda has gone to RB Leipzig, potentially leaving Brighton short out wide.

Sunderland meanwhile sent ex-Albion winger Simon Adingra on loan to Monaco with an option to buy.

And Raheem Sterling is a free agent after being released from his Chelsea contract. Could he pop up at another Premier League club?
