<p><a href="https://twitter.com/FPL_JianBatra">Jian Batra</a> looks at which of the two very popular FPL assets, <strong>Kai Havertz (£7.9m)</strong> or <strong>Mason Mount (£7.6m)</strong>, is the better fantasy football pick for the run in.</p>

<p>Three or four gameweeks ago, <strong>Havertz (£7.9m)</strong> would&#8217;ve been the easy pick between these two. The German is essentially playing as a floating striker within the team, involved in a large majority of Chelsea&#8217;s attacks, has great form and is on penalties when Jorginho isn&#8217;t on the pitch. He would&#8217;ve been the obvious choice.</p>
<p>But in recent weeks, Mount has been improving both from a statistical perspective and an eye-test perspective. I rarely start my articles with the conclusion, but I do in fact think that <strong>Mount (£7.6m)</strong> is the better option.</p>

<h2>The Eye Test &#8211; Why Mount Comes out on top</h2>
<p>Mount was exceptional in the Champions League tie against Real Madrid. That was the game that really caught my eye. Tuchel adopted the split striker system which has worked well for him in the past, and did so again that evening.</p>
<p>Rather than playing on the right side of a front three, Mount played in a Number. 10 role. The positions he found himself in were far more dangerous &#8211; just look at his goal against Madrid. Rather than having to create chances from difficult angles limiting his assist potential and seriously hindering his goal scoring potential, he now had multiple options every time he received the ball.</p>
<p>Operating in the centre of the pitch will always get the most out of Mount. It&#8217;s why Chelsea have been so good defensively under Tuchel: he ensures they always have central numeric advantages.</p>
<p>In modern football, teams that really struggle defensively are the ones which can&#8217;t stop the opposition&#8217;s attacker drifting into the space between the last two defensive lines in a very central space. They cause problems for all sort of reasons, but essentially if you keep giving them space they will hurt you and the only real counter is to drag one of your centre-backs out, something the split strikers can exploit perfectly.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s a reason why Havertz remains a very good option.</p>
<p>Given the nature of the game (chasing a two goal deficit), Havertz played very centrally. However, since Chelsea&#8217;s transition to moving <strong>Reece James</strong> to right centre-back, Havertz has played wider on the right side of the three (reference the Crystal Palace game, for example). It&#8217;s easy to overlook something like this as it&#8217;s a very recent change, but given Chelsea&#8217;s success with this system, I&#8217;d expect the trend to continue.</p>
<p>Thomas Tuchel stated he was very much a fan of James in both the right wing-back role and his &#8220;new&#8221; position. As such, we could see Havertz operating in somewhat of a similar role as Mount did earlier in the season. This, of course, rests on the premise that <strong>Timo Werner (£8.6m)</strong> retains his starting place. Considering his good form, there&#8217;s no reason to suspect he will be displaced.</p>
<p>Finally, Mount has more avenues to points with the responsibility of taking set pieces.</p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>Havertz vs Mount: the Stats</h2>
<p>As you may have seen previously, I&#8217;m not a huge fan of statistics as a basis to advocate a player, but they act as a &#8220;supporting role&#8221; in this argument.</p>
<p>Mount&#8217;s xGI of 1.3 trumps that of Havertz&#8217;, who has amassed 0.8 in the last two games.</p>
<p>In this &#8220;new&#8221; Number. 10 role, Mount has created three big chances to Havertz&#8217; zero, but the statistic which I particularly like is touches in the final third. Mount has significantly improved in that aspect and caught up to Havertz, indicated by their recent heat maps.</p>

<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>As I stated at the start of the article, Mount is my pick over Havertz.</p>
<p>However, if you have the luxury of being able to afford both, I would certainly do that. There aren&#8217;t many better midfield options.</p>
<p>Finally, whilst it isn&#8217;t entirely relevant to the article itself, I&#8217;d avoid Timo Werner (there&#8217;s been a lot of talk amongst the community about him) and <strong>Marcos Alonso (£5.5m)</strong> is my pick of the bunch amongst for the Chelsea defenders.</p>
