<h2>Brentford 2022/23 season expectations</h2>

Brentford outdid expectations by not only surviving the drop but doing so comfortably.
They started off by stunning the league, winning at home to Arsenal and losing just one of the first seven.
Form soon dropped, winning just three of the next 20 and raising relegation concerns.
<h4>A change in form</h4>
But January signing Christian Eriksen joined and in his first start, Brentford won just their fourth game in 21 attempts.
Eriksen helped the side to seven wins in the last 11 and the fourth-best points tally per game in the league.
The record of seven wins was more than they managed in the rest of the season (six), and the side scored 1.9 goals per game, compared to just 1.0 beforehand.
David Raya was also key to Brentford&#8217;s dramatic turn in form. In the 14 games he missed in the middle of the season with a knee injury, The Bees kept just one clean sheet and conceded a league-high 29 goals.
He is not only key to their defence but his expert distribution is key in moving the ball up the pitch effectively.
Across the course of the season, Brentford recorded the ninth-highest <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/a-simple-guide-to-opta-stats-for-fpl">expected goals</a> (xG), with 1.4 per game.
That being said, they slightly underperformed that by scoring just 1.26 per game.
They&#8217;ll need to be more clinical this season with chances likely to be less frequent without Eriksen.
Bryan Mbuemo was particularly wasteful &#8211; or you could argue unlucky &#8211; racking up an xG of over double his actual goal output and hitting the woodwork a ridiculous seven times.
The Bees made the most of set-pieces, scoring 15. That was the league&#8217;s fourth-best record and a contribution to over 30% of their goals.
Thomas Frank&#8217;s side can&#8217;t rely on keeping that record up though, as teams will become accustomed to defending against them.
Defensively, Brentford had the tenth-best expected goals conceded (xGC) record and I can&#8217;t see that figure of 1.48 per game changing too much. Their actual record of 1.48 goals conceded per game pretty much aligned with that.
<h4>Looking ahead to 2022/23</h4>
Squad depth has been improved to help avoid another run of horrendous form in the event of a long-term injury, with Aaron Hickey, Thomas Strakosha, Ben Mee and Keane Lewis-Potter all joining.
They lack a back-up to key-man Ivan Toney with Marcus Forss set to depart, so that&#8217;s an area they need to strengthen by the end of window.
Eriksen is yet to be replaced, so Thomas Frank may have to settle for Josh Dasilva to take that responsibility.
Brentford will be hoping to avoid second-season syndrome, and I think they&#8217;ll be closer to the drop this season.
The Bees could have been heading down had Eriksen not joined, so his loss is massive.
Although I think it will go right down to end, I can see Brentford narrowly avoiding the drop.
<h2>Brentford 2022/23 expected line-up</h2>
                        Raya
Hickey &#8211; Ajer &#8211; Pinnock &#8211; Henry
    Dasilva &#8211; Norgaard &#8211; Jensen
     Mbuemo &#8211; Toney &#8211; Wissa
&nbsp;
Raya will start the season as the number-one goalkeeper despite the arrival of Strakosha.
Pontus Jansson will be partnered by new signing Mee at centre-half whilst Kristoffer Ajer and Ethan Pinnock recover from injuries.
But I think Ajer and Pinnock may return to the 11 when he is fit.
New signing Hickey will start the season at right-back and Rico Henry will be an important player at left-back.
Dasilva looks likely to replace Eriksen after suffering from an injury that kept out for the majority of last season.
However, against stronger sides, he may drop out for more defensively minded Vitaly Janelt.
Filling the other two spots will be Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen, who will start the majority of games.
Mbuemo is nailed next to his strike-partner Toney.
Yoane Wissa is set to face competition in new signing Lewis-Potter but is likely to remain first choice for the start of the season.
<h2>Best Brentford forward for FPL</h2>
<h4>Ivan Toney (£7.0m)</h4>
Toney adjusted to Premier League life reasonably well, finishing the campaign with 12 goals and five assists.
He averaged a decent xG of 0.39 per game, which was only above his goal tally by 0.03.
As well as that, he racked up 2.18 shots in the box and 0.53 big chances per game, but just 0.91 on target.
His xG and shots in the box totals per game were only bettered by three forwards, whilst five beat his shots on target count and eight had more big chances.
But when it came down to it, he boasted the sixth-best goal record per game.
It is worth noting that Toney&#8217;s xG was significantly higher with Eriksen starting behind him.
He averaged an xG of 0.58 with Eriksen and an xG of 0.36 without.
That sum of 0.36 was still the fifth-highest among forwards in that period, so Eriksen&#8217;s loss isn&#8217;t perhaps as drastic as some might think.
It&#8217;s also worth pointing out that Toney&#8217;s five penalty kicks went a way in ending on a high xG. Across the season, Toney didn&#8217;t even finish in the top ten for non-penalty expected goals.
Although penalties can&#8217;t be guaranteed, Frank has stated that Toney is &#8216;the best penalty taker in the world&#8217;.
<h4>Creativity</h4>
Toney was considerably unlucky to not assist more than five.
His expected assist tally of 0.25 only accounted for 0.15 actual goals per game, and whilst his record of 0.33 big chances created didn&#8217;t really account for as much as it should have.
Both records were the second best among forwards, but his actual assist output per appearance wasn&#8217;t even in the top ten.
In my opinion, that&#8217;s extremely unlucky and we&#8217;ll see a better record this season.
I believe Toney is one of the best <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-mid-priced-forwards">mid-priced forwards</a>, and is one to really look at for Brentford nice early run of fixtures.

<h2>Best Brentford midfielder for FPL.</h2>
<h4>Yoane Wissa (£5.5m)</h4>
Wissa proved to be another one of Brentford&#8217;s smart signings, as he managed to end on seven goals and two assists in just over 1,000 minutes.
His record of 0.49 goals per 90 minutes was the sixth-best record among midfielders, although he did outscore his xG by over twice as much.
Wissa offers little-to-no creativity, failing to create a single big chance all season.
He should start the season ahead of Lewis-Potter due to his lack of Premier League experience but I think he could lose his spot eventually.
I don&#8217;t think he&#8217;s a bad option to start the season with, given the fixtures.
<h2>Best Brentford defender for FPL</h2>
<h4>Rico Henry (£4.5m)</h4>
Henry looks the best defender to start with given how nailed he is as well his ability in the final third.
He ended the season with three goals but was a bit unlucky to finish without an assist.
On average, he had 0.07 expected goals per game as well as 0.06 expected assists.
That wasn&#8217;t the best record, but he&#8217;s the most nailed of the back four set to start the season and should chip with a few goals or assists across the season.
<h2>Top under-the-radar Brentford players:</h2>
<h4>Josh Dasilva (£4.5m)</h4>
Dasilva was a key player for the Bees in the Championship and would have been last season if it wasn&#8217;t for a near career-ending hip injury which kept him out for pretty much a year.
At the moment, he looks most likely to fill Eriksen&#8217;s void. He is the most natural advanced midfielder in the squad, having played there regularly there for the side before promotion.
He racked up 15 goals and eight assists in his final two seasons in the Championship, before the injury ended the last Championship season about halfway through.
At £4.5m, you can&#8217;t really go wrong. He may not start every game but will certainly feature in every one when fit with the re-introduction of five subs.
Bryan Mbuemo (£6.0m)
Arguably the most unlucky player in the league last season, Mbuemo came away with four goals and seven assists.
He came no where near his xG of 0.24 per game, finishing just short of half of that with 0.11. I think his woodwork record is pretty much down to luck, and I think he&#8217;ll convert some of those next season.
Mbuemo started the season up top, but was shifted to the right-wing when Frank changed his system to a 4-3-3.
It was actually on the right where Mbuemo was least clinical. He averaged xG of 0.33 there but finished with just 0.09 goals per game.
The positives are that his goal threat didn&#8217;t drop when he was moved out wide &#8211; and that he&#8217;s got too much quality to under-perform that significantly again.
He also finished with an expected assist tally of 0.15 per game, securing an expected goal involvement (xGI) tally in the top 20 forwards.
It&#8217;s a shame Mbuemo has been re-classified as a forward, but he&#8217;s a not a bad option given his price tag.
David Raya (£4.5m)
Brentford had Raya partly to thank for their decent defensive record last season. He managed more than three saves a game and the third-best points-per-game record besides the three premium goalkeepers.
I don&#8217;t think his spot&#8217;s in real danger and a similar points tally looks on the cards this season.
<h2>Brentford players to avoid:</h2>
-Hickey doesn&#8217;t provide value when you can go for Henry at £0.5 million cheaper in FPL, so I&#8217;d stay off him.
-Norgaard isn&#8217;t a strong FPL asset.
-I don&#8217;t think Jansson is going to be part of Frank&#8217;s first-choice team.

Penalties: Toney, Mbuemo, Dasilva 
Direct free kicks: Mbuemo, Canos, Ghoddos 
Corners and indirect free kicks: Jensen, Mbuemo, Ghoddos, Janelt 
Aerial threats: Toney
