<h2>Everton 2022/23 season expectations</h2>

<p>The Toffees began the season with the unpopular appointment of former Red, Rafael Benitez.</p>
<p>Despite winning the four of the first six league games, the Everton faithful never took to the boss and eventually he was sacked after just one win in 15.</p>
<p>That run of games also showed how important talisman <strong>Dominic Calvert-Lewin</strong> is. He played just three of those 15 games after a fracturing his toe four weeks into the season.</p>
<p>Everton became toothless in front of goal. Their record of just 0.87 goals per game was only better than Norwich and Burnley.</p>
<p>They were also poor at the other end, conceding the most goals (2.07) per game and second highest <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/a-simple-guide-to-opta-stats-for-fpl">expected goals</a> (XG) of 1.89.</p>
<p>Benitez had to go, and in came Frank Lampard, tasked with turning around the mood at Goodison Park and steering the side away from the relegation places.</p>
<p>Despite winning his first game comfortably at home to Leeds, Lampard lost six of the following seven and the Toffees looked all but doomed.</p>
<p>Still, they struggled for goals without Calvert-Lewin and were shipping far too many at the other end.</p>
<p>However, in that run of seven games came the turning point in their season. <strong>Alex Iwobi</strong> scored a 99th minute winner against Newcastle at Goodison Park to claim three points in a narrow 1-0 win.</p>
<p>That turned the mood around at Goodison and Everton went on to win 1-0 to Manchester United in their next home game. They then held Leicester to a 1-1 draw, before beating Chelsea and Palace in season defining wins.</p>
<p>Goodison became a fortress and was the reason Everton stayed up, having won five of the eight home games under Lampard&#8217;s leadership.</p>
<p>Their away form was particularly awful across the season. They only picked up ten points away from home all season, and that was something Lampard failed to turn around.</p>
<p>Everton still only had a better expected defensive record than five teams since Lampard joined the club, whilst scoring more and registering a better xG than only five and two teams respectively.</p>
<p>In fact, Everton didn&#8217;t deserve to win a single one of their six wins based on xG. They had <strong>Jordan Pickford</strong> and some fine finishing to thank.</p>
<h4>Key part of the team missing</h4>
<p><strong>Richarlison</strong> was a key part in Everton&#8217;s survival. He scored six in his final nine starts as an Everton player, exactly half of the side&#8217;s goals in that time.</p>
<p>The club are yet to replace him with a similar player, leaving a huge gap in their attack.</p>
<p>It wouldn&#8217;t be unfair to say Goodison&#8217;s atmosphere alone kept the Toffees up. Everton picked up five points in the last five minutes of home games in Lampard&#8217;s spell, so they&#8217;ll need start cementing leads earlier in games.</p>
<p>I think Everton face a tougher task than last season to remain in the league. They can&#8217;t keep relying on late winners and lucky wins.</p>
<p>Richarlison is yet to be replaced, with it looking unlikely he will be.</p>
<p>As well as that, actual performances didn&#8217;t really change under Lampard, with their underlying <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> still in the bottom five for both attacking and defensive metrics.</p>
<p>Away form is another huge issue to solve, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin has to remain fit for the majority of the season.</p>
<p>I think there&#8217;s too many issues to contend with at the moment. Home support isn&#8217;t enough to keep you up, and I can&#8217;t see where goals are going to come from besides Calvert-Lewin.</p>
<p>Therefore, I can see Everton finishing in the bottom three.</p>
<h2>Everton 2022/23 expected line-up</h2>
<p><strong>                           Pickford</strong></p>
<p><strong>         Godfrey &#8211; Tarkowski &#8211; Mina</strong></p>
<p><strong>Patterson &#8211; Iwobi &#8211; Doucoure &#8211; Mykolenko</strong></p>
<p><strong>     McNeil &#8211; Calvert-Lewin &#8211; Gordon</strong></p>
<p>Pickford is the number one and that won&#8217;t change.</p>
<p><strong>Ben Godfrey</strong>, <strong>James Tarkowski</strong> and <strong>Yerry Mina</strong> will be the favoured back three, although the latter is a question mark for the beginning of the season after only featuring in 45 minutes of pre-season.</p>
<p>Nathan Patterson has impressed in pre-season and should start the season as the first choice right-wing back. <strong>Vitalii Mykolenko</strong> will remain a regular starter despite the signing of <strong>Ruben Vinagre</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Abdoulaye Doucoure</strong>, <strong>Alex Iwobi</strong> and <strong>Allan</strong> are in the lead to take the two midfielder spots, with the latter looking the most likely to sit out.</p>
<p><strong>Dwight McNeil</strong> should come straight into side on the right, with <strong>Anthony Gordon</strong> narrowly ahead of <strong>Demarai Gray</strong> as an option on the left-side.</p>
<p>Calvert-Lewin will lead the line.</p>

<h2><strong>Best Everton forward for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m)</h4>
<p>Calvert-Lewin suffered from an injury-hit season, starting just 15 times. He netted five times in limited minutes, a shadow of his total of 16 in 2020/21.</p>
<p>Three of those goals came in the opening three games and he scored just twice in 11 appearances for Lampard.</p>
<p>The departure of Richarlison should see more crosses aimed at him and he&#8217;s too good of a player not to improve this season.</p>
<p>Calvert-Lewin managed just an xG of 0.17, 0.47 shots on target and 0.23 big chances per 90 minutes under Lampard.</p>
<p>His two goals actually outscored his expected total which underlines how poor he was playing.</p>
<p>To put into context those underlying numbers, only one forward to have not played limited minutes averaged a lower xG and shots on target tally in that time, whilst just three had less big chances per 90 minutes.</p>
<p>He needs to return to the form of old to justify anything near his price-tag of eight million.</p>
<h2><strong>Best Everton midfielder for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>Dwight McNeil (£5.5m)</h4>
<p>McNeil was never a prolific goalscorer for Burnley. Zero, two, two and three were the goal tallies of his final four season for the Clarets, which is nowhere near what you&#8217;d want from a fantasy asset.</p>
<p>However, McNeil is set to start on the right, which will significantly improve his goal threat. Being left-footed, he can cut in and shoot, whereas for Burnley he was tasked to cross early and remain out on the left flank.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s already scored two in less than 45 minutes of pre-season football for Everton, with one being from cutting inside.</p>
<p>McNeil is also an aerial threat at 6ft 2ins, so will be dangerous from crosses, especially from the left-hand side.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d argue he played as more of a wing-back than an outright winger for Burnley and that role will be completely reversed under Lampard. He&#8217;ll find himself in and around the penalty area far more often.</p>
<h2><strong>Best Everton defender for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>James Tarkowski (£4.5m)</h4>
<p>Tarkowski offers the most goal threat in a side that will be dangerous from set-pieces. He had 0.14 big chances and an xG 0f 0.08 per game last season.</p>
<p>Out of defenders priced less than five million, only five had more big chances per game, whilst Tarkowski also recorded the eighth-best xG per game.</p>
<p>Those records were the best compared to defenders in the current Everton side.</p>
<p>As well as that, he&#8217;ll be most likely to pick up bonus out of the defence by playing in the middle of the three. He&#8217;ll play more passes there and be involved in more aerial duels (that he&#8217;ll most likely win).</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll get a few goals this season and is relatively good value at £4.5m.</p>
<h2><strong>Top under-the-radar Everton players:</strong></h2>
<p><strong>Nathan Patterson (£4.0m)</strong></p>
<p>The former Rangers full-back looks poised to start the season at wing-back, having impressed in the absence of skipper <strong>Seamus Coleman</strong>.</p>
<p>Due to not playing a single minute last season, there&#8217;s little we can look at in terms of underlying numbers. However, he picked up two assists in Everton&#8217;s&#8217; 4-2 friendly win over Blackpool and you can expect more due to the role he&#8217;s going to play in.</p>

<h2><strong>Everton FPL players to avoid:</strong></h2>
<p>Mykolenko offered less goal threat than Tarkowski last season (even in the wing-back role), and could be subject to occasional rotation with new signing Vinagre, who seems too good to be squad player.</p>
<p>Mykolenko could play at the left of the back three which would pretty much get rid of the little goal threat he offers at the moment.</p>
<p>Doucoure and Iwobi don&#8217;t offer either enough goal threat or the certainty of regular starts so are no-gos.</p>
<h2>Everton set-piece takers:</h2>
