<h2>Manchester United 2022/23 season expectations</h2>

Manchester United had a season to forget, finishing with their lowest points tally in Premier League history.
Things looked rosy for a start. Cristiano Ronaldo re-joined the club as the team managed 13 points out of the first possible 15.
However, form quickly turned as United went on to to win only one of the following eight league games.
That run included an appalling 5-0 home loss to Liverpool, and losses away to Leicester and Watford, conceding four against both.
This run of eight games resulted in the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and in came Ralf Rangnick. A brief manager bounce followed, as the Red Devils only lost one of the following 15.
They did drop points at home to Watford, Southampton and Wolves in that time though and failed to beat Newcastle, Burnley and Aston Villa away from home.
United had another poor run of form to end the season, losing five of the last eight games and winning only three from the last 12.
That was mainly due to their form away from home, losing their last six games on their travels.
Despite some mediocre performances, they did only lose one of the 13 home games since the beginning of December and only Liverpool and Manchester City picked up more points at home in this time than United.
Ending with a zero goal difference was particularly bad from United. Only seven teams conceded more and only five conceded more away from home.
Their <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/a-simple-guide-to-opta-stats-for-fpl">expected goals conceded</a> (xGC) record of 1.56 per game showed that they would&#8217;ve conceded more if not for David de Gea, who kept their actual goals conceded (GC) at 1.50 per game.
They were slightly better in front of goal, but their tally of 57 goals was only the eighth most, and their lowest record since 2016/17.
Their expected goals (xG) record of 1.61 was comfortably the sixth best in the league and they only managed 0.11 less than that.
A new dawn begins under new manager Erik ten Hag, whose high pressing and possession-based system is slightly similar to what Rangnick tried to install.
The new manager should impose more discipline and his training sessions are supposed to be structured and challenging.
Luckily for United players, ten Hag&#8217;s system is not quite as focused on intense pressing as Rangnick&#8217;s, something Rangnick eventually gave up on.
<h4>Manchester United in the transfer market</h4>
United are yet to really make a mark in what is an important transfer window.
Ten Hag has opted for players he knows well from his time in Holland in Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.
As a left-back, I&#8217;m not sure how Malacia will fit in given Alex Telles and Luke Shaw don&#8217;t look like they are going anywhere.
Eriksen is a nice-fit given his ability in possession as well as his high work-rate but how he&#8217;ll fit in with Bruno Fernandes as the nailed number ten is another question.
Finally, Martinez played at centre-back at Ajax for ten Hag. But at just 5ft 7ins, will he adapt well to playing this position in the Premier League?
In his defence, his record of 3.13 tackles in the Champions League last season was better than 99% of centre-halves in the top-five European league across their seasons.
And fewer than 5% of centre-backs completed more progressive passes, progressive carries and passes.
That was despite these records being recorded in the Champions League, in which Ajax would generally have less possession than normal, and face far more difficult teams than the majority of those centre-backs that he has been compared to.
Frenkie de Jong is also rumoured to be coming in and there are very fewer better deep-lying playmakers in the world than him.
Should United finalise the de Jong deal, I can see them challenging for top four once again. However, it looks unlikely as it stands.
United will have a better season and will be in and around top four qualification.
<h2>Manchester United 2022/23 expected lineup</h2>
                       De Gea
Dalot &#8211; Maguire &#8211; Martinez &#8211; Shaw
                 Eriksen &#8211; Fred
 Sancho &#8211; Fernandes &#8211; Rashford
                      Ronaldo
&nbsp;
De Gea will undoubtedly be the starting keeper when fit.
I would go as far as saying none of United&#8217;s back four is nailed.
Captain Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are reportedly the most likely defensive partnership to start the season.
Diego Dalot  and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will contest the right-back spot, but the former looks to be preferred in pre-season.
Shaw should be preferred to Malacia and Telles.
Fred looks like the most nailed central midfielder, with Eriksen looking like the most likely candidate to play in the roaming playmaker role.
James Garner is an alternative to Eriksen if United don&#8217;t strengthen in the transfer window.
Fernandes and Jadon Sancho are pretty much nailed.
Rashford has looked better in pre-season and should take the spot on the left-wing.
Ronaldo looks like he will stay at the club to lead the line. However, there are reports Martial will start the season as the number nine due to having a full pre-season under his belt.
<h2>Best Manchester United forward for FPL</h2>
<h4>Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m)</h4>
Despite ending the season as the club&#8217;s top scorer with 18 league goals, Ronaldo did underwhelm the United faithful a bit.
It was his worst league goal tally season since 2008/09 and it seemed like he had more bad games than good ones.
He did show how explosive he can still be as a fantasy option.
He scored two braces and two hat-tricks. No other player scored two or more hat-tricks and only three other players scored two or more on more than three occasions.
No forward had a better goal record than his 0.60 per game. Added to that, he had the second-best xG (0.55), the second-most big chances (0.83), the most shots in the box (2.93) and the second-most shots on target (1.43) per game of all forwards last season.
Despite only managing three assists, he was actually quite creative for his teammates.
His expected assists (xA) tally of 0.23 per game was the joint-third best among forwards and far better than his actual assist output of only 0.10 per game.
Therefore, he was unlucky to only make three goals and that number should be better this season.
I think he will receive more chances from his teammates this season. Eriksen&#8217;s crossing ability is something Ronaldo can thrive from, Sancho can only get better and you&#8217;d expect the team to improve  in general.
I do think he&#8217;s going slightly under the radar and although maybe not from the start, I think he&#8217;s a better option this season than last and he&#8217;s one to consider when he gets back into the team.

<h2>Best Manchester United midfielder for FPL</h2>
<h4>Jadon Sancho (£7.5m)</h4>
Sancho struggled to adjust to the Premier League in his inaugural season, scoring just three times and assisting four.
He did become a regular starter towards the end of the season and managed two of those goals and three of those assists in his final nine starts.
Ten Hag is great for developing players and has already shown faith in Sancho in pre-season.
You cannot forget that he was involved in 89 goals in 103 Bundesliga games for Borussia Dortmund &#8211; and if he was able to translate anything near that form he&#8217;d provide brilliant value.
I expect him to kick on this season and I think he looks a good option.
<h2>Best Manchester United defender for FPL</h2>
<h4>Luke Shaw (£5.0m)</h4>
It looks like Shaw will be the starting left-back and could be decent value if United can improve defensively.
He averaged the best xA (0.17), created the most big chances (0.26) and made the most key passes (2.00) per start out of United defenders last season.
His xA tally was also the sixth-best in the league among defenders and only four created more big chances per start.
As well as that, Matt Ritchie (£4.5m), Reece James (£6.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) were the only defenders that made more key passes than him per start.
Therefore, his creativity is evident and one of the best among defenders in the league. If he nails down the left-back spot, he&#8217;s a decent option.
<h2>Top under-the-radar Manchester United players:</h2>
<h4>Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m)</h4>
Fernandes had his first average season after two fantastic seasons.
In more minutes this season than last, he scored eight fewer goals (10) and half the assists (seven).
A lot factored into turn in form, such as United&#8217;s poor him and Ronaldo taking his penalty duties off him.
He was also relatively unlucky in terms of assists, with his xA tally of 0.29 per game only outputting 0.19 actual assists.
Only two midfielders had a better xA record per game and only three beat his big chances created tally of 0.42 per game.
Moreover, only five midfielders had more shots per game than his 2.47, and only six had a better expected goal involvement (GI) count per game than his 0.6.
Ten Hag&#8217;s attacking midfielder plays more as a number eight than a number 10. This has been demonstrated by the likes of Donny van de Beek (£5.5m), Davy Klaassen and Steven Berghuis.
All showed their capabilities of scoring in the Eredivisie, yet proved to be far less of a goal threat in ten Hag&#8217;s system.
For example, Berghuis recorded his lowest goals per game tally out of his eight Eredivisie seasons, and van de Beek failed to reach double-figure goals in both full seasons as ten Hag&#8217;s central attacking midfielder.
I don&#8217;t think Fernandes will recreate the form he showed when he first joined the league, but he will still be an ok option.

<h4>Christian Eriksen (£6.5m)</h4>
After suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, Eriksen returned to football at Brentford last season and showed he could still do it.
He played in a deeper role than he has done for the majority of his career and his numbers dipped because of that. However, he still performed as well as he ever has and if he plays in an advanced role there&#8217;s no reason he can reproduce the numbers he did for Spurs.
Eriksen registered at least 20 goal involvements in his final four full seasons for Spurs and since the 2018 World Cup has scored 15 and assisted six in 33 caps for international side Denmark.
I think he could be tasked to play deeper this season.
However, he&#8217;s also capable of playing a similar role to Dusan Tadic did under ten Hag. Tadic racked up an impressive 38 goals and 48 assists in just two seasons playing on the left.
I think Eriksen comes in at terrific value and if he nails down one of the three advanced midfield roles, is an excellent option. So he&#8217;s one to watch out for.
<h2>Manchester United players to avoid:</h2>
I can&#8217;t see many reasons in going for the likes of Maguire and Raphael Varane at the moment &#8211; particularly given the latter may not even start &#8211; so I&#8217;d avoid them.
Rashford is one to avoid for now, as we don&#8217;t know how Eriksen will fit in. However, if he finds form is a great asset given his price.
