<h2>Southampton 2022/23 season expectations</h2>

<p>Last season, Southampton only claimed their first win on the eighth attempt and won just one of the final 12 games.</p>
<p>Their mid-season form effectively kept them up after finishing just five points clear of the drop.</p>
<p>Once again they were the subject of some thrashings, conceding three or more on nine occasions.</p>
<p>But they also picked up a deserved draws at the <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-tips-manchester-city-team-preview-2022-23">Etihad</a> and <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-tips-manchester-united-team-preview-2022-23">Old Trafford</a>, as well as a win at Spurs.</p>
<h4>Home and away form</h4>
<p>At times last season, Southampton looked fantastic. Yet there were several games where they looked like a relegation side.</p>
<p>Their home form was exceptional up until March. They only lost one of their first 13 home games and racked up the seventh-most points in the process.</p>
<p>However, their away form was poor. They only picked up more points on the road than Norwich, Everton and Burnley, conceding the most.</p>
<p>Their away form was an example of where the side lacked an effective plan B.</p>
<p>Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl played around with a back three with little effect and failed to adapt when performances were poor.</p>
<p>There were also several games where Southampton had chances to win but came away with a point and occasionally nothing.</p>
<p>Only <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-tips-west-ham-team-preview-2022-23">West Ham</a>, <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-tips-leicester-city-team-preview-2022-23">Leicester</a> and <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-tips-brentford-team-preview-2022-23">Brentford</a> besides the top six racked up a higher xG, yet only six teams scored fewer.</p>
<p>Added to that, Southampton were far too reliant on individuals to score their goals. <strong>James Ward-Prowse</strong> and <strong>Che Adams</strong> contributed to 35 and 26 percent of goals respectively and only those two and loanee Armando Broja scored five or more goals.</p>
<p>Hasenhuttl has been trialling a three-at-the-back system in <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fpl-pre-season-guide-2022-23">pre-season</a> and is set to start the season with it.</p>
<p>Saints will be hoping to add firepower to the front-line even after the signings of <strong>Joe Aribo</strong> and <strong>Sekou Mara</strong>. The latter is still raw, having played only just over 1,000 minutes of senior team football.</p>
<p>I think Saints will have enough to stay up. I&#8217;d expect them to find a run of form once again which will be enough to secure their status in the league, although I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;ll struggle at times.</p>
<h2>Southampton 2022/23 expected line-up</h2>

<p>Hasenhuttl seems intent on starting the season with three at the back.</p>
<p>New signing <strong>Gavin Bazunu</strong> is likely to replace <strong>Alex McCarthy</strong> as the number one.</p>
<p>New signing <strong>Armel Bella-Kotchap</strong> looks set to partner <strong>Jan Bednarek</strong> and <strong>Mohammed Salisu</strong> in the back three.</p>
<p><strong>Kyle Walker-Peters</strong> and <strong>Moussa Djenepo</strong> are set to start the season as the wing-backs. Hasenhuttl has stated it is imperative that they get as far forward as possible and it has been on show in pre-season.</p>
<p><strong>Romain Perraud</strong> could displace Djenepo a few weeks into the season but is still struggling with an injury he picked up at the end of the season.</p>
<p>Ward-Prowse will be an ever-present starter, whilst Oriol Romeu&#8217;s spot won&#8217;t be set in stone after the arrival of talented youngster <strong>Romeo Lavia</strong> from Man City.</p>
<p><strong>Joe Aribo</strong> looks a likely starter and it&#8217;s just of case of whether it&#8217;s as an attacking midfielder or in the front two.</p>
<p><strong>Che Adams</strong> will start the majority of games, with either <strong>Adam Armstrong</strong> or <strong>Stuart Armstrong</strong> likely to take the final spot in the team.</p>
<h2><strong>Best Southampton forward for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>Che Adams (£6.5m)</h4>
<p>Adams recorded the most goals per 90 minutes in the squad (0.31), totalling seven goals and four assists across the season.</p>
<p>He failed to beat both his <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/a-simple-guide-to-opta-stats-for-fpl">expected goals</a> (xG) of 0.36 and expected assists (xA )of 0.22 per 90 minutes, which were both the best records in the squad.</p>
<p>The Scot also racked up the most shots in the box (1.94) and big chances (0.53) per 90 in the squad.</p>
<p>As well as that, only Nathan Redmond created more than his 0.26 big chances per 90 minutes.</p>
<p>Eleven forwards averaged a higher expected goal involvement (xGI), whilst Adams only had the 19th best xG record per 90 minutes.</p>
<p>Adams doesn&#8217;t stand out as an option by any means but when Southampton&#8217;s fixtures turn he is a good asset for his price.</p>
<h2><strong>Best Southampton midfielder for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m)</h4>
<p>Ward-Prowse had his best season from a goalscoring point of view, scoring ten. Only one of those was scored from open-play, with four coming from the penalty spot and five from free-kicks.</p>
<p>Set-pieces also played a part in three of his five assists, so to say his fantasy prospects are reliant on set-pieces and penalties in an understatement.</p>
<p>The fact he is so reliant on set-pieces doesn&#8217;t actually put me off. His quality from them is so good, I can&#8217;t see his record from them dipping, and no one is going to take the duties off him.</p>
<p>With the change of system, Ward-Prowse will also be able to get forward more. If he can add some open-play threat, he would be a fantastic option.</p>
<p>Only seven midfielders contributed to a higher contribution of goals. Dipping into underlying goal threat <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> is pointless, as Ward-Prowse is always going to outperform them.</p>
<p>From an assist point-of-view, Ward-Prowse created 0.22 big chances and made 1.97 key passes per game, leading to an xA of 0.17 per game.</p>
<p>Only six midfielders could beat that key passes tally, but more than 25 created more big chances and expected assists.</p>

<h2><strong>Best Southampton defender for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m)</h4>
<p>Walker-Peters is going to a play an extremely advanced position compared to most defenders in fantasy.</p>
<p>His ability on the ball is what earned him an England call-up earlier this year, and I&#8217;d expect him to thrive in the wing-back role.</p>
<p>I can only see beating his record last season of a goal and three assists.</p>
<p>His records of 0.62 shots in the box and 0.11 xA per game last year were ranked eighth and third respectively out of defenders priced 4.5 million or less.</p>
<p>Both of those records will improve, making Walker-Peters one of the most attacking budget defenders in the game.</p>
<p>Walker-Peters looks like a great option when Southampton&#8217;s fixtures turn and should be kept a close eye on.</p>
<h2><strong>Top under-the-radar Southampton players:</strong></h2>
<h4><strong>Joe Aribo (£5.5m)</strong></h4>
<p>The highly rated midfielder comes in from Rangers after an impressive season north of the border.</p>
<p>Aribo netted eight goals and picked up six goals in 29 league starts.</p>
<p>He played games both as a number eight and number ten, but produced more goals as a ten, where he scored five and assisted three in 13 appearences.</p>
<p>The former Charlton player averaged 1.6 shots per game, 70% of which were in the box. It&#8217;s clear Aribo won&#8217;t shoot for the sake of it and is good finisher.</p>
<p>Aribo is a wait-and-see but I think he will become an option later in the season.</p>
<h2><strong>Southampton FPL players to avoid:</strong></h2>
<p>I would stay clear of all the defensive assets besides Walker-Peters.</p>
<p>Adam Armstrong&#8217;s spot isn&#8217;t secure and Hasenhuttl could still bring in a striker. However, I can see him having a break-through season if he can keep his spot.</p>
<h2>Southampton set-piece takers:</h2>
