<h2>Chelsea 2022/23 season expectations</h2>

<p>Chelsea perhaps underwhelmed slightly in the league last season.</p>
<p>They were tipped to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool to the title following the marquee signing of<strong> Romelu Lukaku</strong> and their Champions League win.</p>
<p>Lukaku never found form, became unsettled at the club and Chelsea were soon out of the title picture.</p>
<p>They still comfortably finished in the top four and had reached the final of both domestic competitions, so it wasn&#8217;t a bad season for Thomas Tuchel&#8217;s side.</p>
<p>Lukaku has now left to rejoin former club Inter Milan, and <strong>Antonio Rudiger</strong> and <strong>Andreas Christensen</strong> have now departed the club, leaving the Blues a little light of options defensively.</p>
<p>Chelsea recorded the third-best <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta">expected goals against</a> (xGA) record last season (1.0 per game), leading to them keep the joint-third most clean sheets (16) and concede the third-fewest goals (0.87 per game).</p>
<p>Rudiger was also a key part of their defensive strength, missing just four games all season and starting all the rest.</p>
<p>He has now left the club and <strong>Kalidou Koulibaly (£5.5m) </strong>isn&#8217;t quite at his level in my opinion, so I don&#8217;t think the Blues will better their defensive numbers from last season.</p>
<p><strong>Raheem Sterling (£10.0m)</strong> will provide goals that they haven&#8217;t had from a single player for a few seasons but a lot of Chelsea&#8217;s attackers have been able to chip in with goals when needed.</p>
<p>So as good a signing as Sterling is, I&#8217;m not sure how many more the team will actually score.</p>

<p>I think Chelsea will find it more of a challenge to finish in the top four due to their rivals strengthening but they should have enough.</p>

<h2>Chelsea 2022/23 expected lineup</h2>
<p><strong>                             Mendy</strong></p>

<p><strong>James &#8211; Jorginho &#8211; Kovacic &#8211; Chilwell</strong></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Edouard Mendy (£5.0m) </strong>will undoubtedly be the starting keeper when fit.</p>
<p><strong>Thiago Silva (£5.5m)</strong> will play all the games he can but he turns 38 in September. Koulibaly is probably the most like-for-like Rudiger replacement Chelsea could have gone for and he&#8217;ll be expected to play pretty much every game.</p>
<p><strong>Trevoh Chalobah (£5.0m)</strong> is probably first choice in the current squad to play on the right of the back three, although I can see a signing coming in there, with <strong>Jules Kounde</strong> heavily linked.</p>
<p><strong>Reece James (£6.0m)</strong> and <strong>Ben Chilwell (£6.0m)</strong> will be the first-choice wing-backs but will face some inevitable rotation occasionally.</p>
<p><strong>Jorginho (£6.0m)</strong>, <strong>Mateo Kovacic (£5.0m)</strong>,<strong> N&#8217;golo Kante (£5.0m)</strong>, <strong>Conor Gallagher (£6.0m)</strong> and <strong>Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.0m)</strong> will fight for the two spots in central midfield, with the former two most likely to start the most games.</p>
<p><strong>Kai Havertz (£8.0m)</strong> will be the first-choice centre-forward and <strong>Mason Mount (£8.0m)</strong> and Sterling will the first-choice supporting players beside him.</p>
<h2><strong>Best Chelsea forward for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>Kai Havertz</h4>
<p>Havertz had a slightly better season last season after struggling in his honeymoon campaign.</p>
<p>He scored eight goals and assisted four in about 1,800 minutes. The German will get more minutes this season after the departure of Lukaku.</p>
<p>His only real competition would come from <strong>Armando Broja (£5.5m)</strong>, who looks like he&#8217;ll leave the club anyway.</p>
<p>Havertz averaged 0.90 big chances per 90 minutes last season, which was the seventh-best record of all players last season.</p>
<p>He also had the fifth-best expected goal involvement (xGI) per 90 minutes (0.7) out of all players classified as attackers this season, so the underlying <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> are certainly there.</p>
<p>Havertz looks like a promising option and is one of the stand-out mid-priced forwards. I think he&#8217;s a good differential.</p>
<h2><strong>Best Chelsea midfielder for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>Raheem Sterling</h4>
<p>Sterling will be looking forward to playing more regularly at Chelsea after having a couple of difficult seasons at Manchester City. I think he&#8217;s well suited to Chelsea&#8217;s system and I&#8217;d be surprised if he wasn&#8217;t Chelsea&#8217;s top scorer this season.</p>
<p>Sterling averaged the second highest expected goals (xG) per start &#8211; 0.54 &#8211; the second-most big chances (BC) per start (0.96), and scored the fifth-most goals per start (0.52) of all midfielders last season.</p>
<p>I think him and Havertz will form a good partnership as they compliment each other well.</p>
<p>This will only benefit Sterling&#8217;s goal output and should make him one of the best upper to premium-priced players in the game.</p>
<h2><strong>Best Chelsea defender for FPL</strong></h2>
<h4>Ben Chilwell</h4>
<p>After suffering a ruptured cruciate ligament in November, Chilwell spent the rest of last season on the sidelines.</p>
<p>That being said, I still think he&#8217;s the strongest fantasy asset out of Chelsea&#8217;s defensive options.</p>
<p>Despite only playing seven games last season, he managed three goals and an assist.</p>
<p>No defender recorded a higher xG per game than Chilwell&#8217;s last season (0.25) and only four managed more than half of that.</p>
<p>Chilwell also averaged 1.43 shots in the box per game and 0.86 shots on target per game, which were comfortably better than any defender.</p>
<p>Of course, Chilwell only played seven games, so these <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> can&#8217;t be taken too seriously.</p>
<p>But in the time Tuchel was at the club in the 2020-21 season, the England international recorded the third-highest xG per game, the fourth-most big chances per game and third-most shots in the box among defenders.</p>
<p>I prefer him to Reece James, as not only are his underlying <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> better but James will occasionally deputise as the right centre-back, which will nullify his Fantasy credentials.</p>
<p>James also suffers with minor injuries quite regularly. He suffered from four separate fitness issues last year, keeping him out of 19 games in all competitions.</p>

<h2><strong>Top under-the-radar Chelsea players:</strong></h2>
<h4><strong>Mason Mount</strong></h4>
<p>Mount had an excellent campaign last time out, ending with 11 goals and as many assists in the league, placing him eighth for most goal involvements per 90 minutes among midfielders.</p>
<p>He did outperform both his xG and xA by about 0.1 per 90 minutes, so whether that is sustainable or not remains to be seen. Before last season, he&#8217;d never outperformed his xG.</p>
<p>Mount will play a key role this season and a similar season in terms of goals and assists is to be expected.</p>
<h4><strong>Reece James</strong></h4>
<p>Reece James is a huge threat from open play at wing-back. He scored five last season and set up nine despite playing less than 2,000 minutes.</p>
<p>He also gets a good share of both free-kicks and corners.</p>
<p>He ended last season with not only the best assist rate per 90 minutes (0.43) of the defenders, but the best goal rate too (0.24). That being said, his xG of 0.14 only ranked fifth among defenders and his xA of 0.29 was significantly lower than his actual assist output.</p>
<p>I think James is a very solid option this season but his early substitutions, injury proneness and ability to play in a back three do slightly put me off him.</p>
<h2><strong>Chelsea players to avoid:</strong></h2>
<p>Silva won&#8217;t start every game, so is a no-go for me.</p>
<p>Jorginho and Kovacic don&#8217;t provide enough goal threat to be fantasy options.</p>
<h2>Chelsea set-piece takers</h2>

<p>As at the end of the 21/22 season, the Chelsea set-piece takers were as follows:</p>
