Why was Postecoglou sacked?

The ex-Spurs boss was winless in eight games in all competitions.

Forest lost four and drew one in the league, starting with a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal in Gameweek 4 and a 0-3 loss at home to Chelsea in Gameweek 8.

A 39 word club statement – coincidentally one for every day of Postecoglou’s short spell – noted that there had been ‘a series of disappointing results and performances’.

Forest are 18th in the table, eight places below where they were when Nuno Espirito Santo was dismissed.

How bad were Forest under Postecoglou?

In Postecoglou’s defence, his time in charge was so short that we can’t read too much into the small amount of data.

But it largely backs up the form.

Forest conceded 10 league goals – the most alongside West Ham – and their expected goals conceded (xGC) of 8.8 was the third worst.

They also scored the fewest goals, although their 5.56 expected goals (xG) indicated an under-performance on their one scored.

Forest were joint worst for goals conceded under Ange Postecoglou

Does Dyche suit Forest’s squad?

One of the strangest parts of Postecoglou’s hiring was the significant difference in style from Espirito Santo.

Media reports suggested Forest’s ownership wanted to develop their style more in the mould of the Greek-born Australian, however many including Postecoglou himself stressed this could take time.

Dyche’s style is much closer to Espirito Santo, which should help many of the players who shone last season.

Burnley and Everton both had a reputation for being defensively solid under him, with the Toffees ranked in the top three for clean sheets while he was managing them.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-75341" class="size-full wp-image-75341" src="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Dyche.jpg" alt="Sean Dyche.
Was Forest’s defence as good as it looked last season?

Defenders are likely to be the main focus for FPL managers given Forest’s recent history.

The Tricky Trees kept 13 clean sheets last season, the joint second most.

Their 46 goals conceded was a slight over-performance in comparison to their 50.5 xGC but still a respectable performance.

As highlighted in our pre-season preview however, their stats fell off during the second half of the season.

Whether they would repeat the highs of 2024/25 was therefore a key question going into the new campaign.

One of the things Dyche will have to improve upon to increase Forest’s clean sheet prospects is how they deal with set-pieces. They conceded 11 times from set plays under Postecoglou.

No one has allowed more shots from set-pieces (12) in the league this season, while their 26 big chances conceded overall is the joint worst.

Defender Nikola Milenkovic.
Are Forest players a good option in FPL again?

While it’s reasonable to expect an upturn in fortunes for Forest under a more tactically suitable manager, it’s sensible to keep an eye on them before acting.

The club has been through a turbulent period – three managers will have been in charge in just nine gameweeks.

It may take time for Dyche to have an impact and for the players to settle as a result.

European football is an added challenge on last season too, which could affect their league form.

Even Dyche himself has limited experience of managing in Europe and the likely rotation that comes with such regular football.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-73289" class="size-full wp-image-73289" src="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Wood-4.jpg" alt="Chris Wood. Picture by Getty Images

There are plenty of options in defence this season thanks to the introduction of defensive contribution points.

Forest defenders would have profited heavily from this system in 2024/25 but returns have been limited in the opening gameweeks.

James Tarkowski was a defensive contribution magnet under Dyche at Everton, so Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic could benefit once again.

On the attacking front, Dyche has previously worked with forward Chris Wood, who was seen as less of a natural fit for Postecoglou. He was a crucial figure in their success last season.

But most FPL managers are unlikely to rush to Forest picks for the time being. Keeping an eye on how they do is certainly worthwhile though.

The fixtures: Is now a good time to buy Forest players in FPL?

Forest rank eighth for overall difficulty on the Hub’s customisable fixture ticker over the next six gameweeks.

The picture improves slightly when filtering the upcoming games for defensive difficulty, ranking sixth best.

Bournemouth (A) in Gameweek 9 is not a good entry point, while Liverpool (A) follows the pick of the immediate games of Leeds (H) in Gameweek 11.

There’s therefore plenty of time to see how Forest do before strongly considering buying them in FPL.
