            <p>Finding the best-value players in FPL is important if you're going to stand a chance of winning.</p>
<p>That's what we're all about at the Hub, so we've asked <a href="https://twitter.com/FPLMatthew">FPL Matthew</a>, arguably the best FPL manager in the world, to define what we mean by "FPL value" and then identify the best-value players in FPL for the 2022/23 season.</p>

<h2>The Best Value Players in FPL | Defining Value</h2>
<p>For this article, I'm using a largely data driven model, with FPL judgement added in for expected minutes and, to an extent, player quality.</p>
<p>As a result, these findings will not be altered by any outside influences such as the social media bubble or emerging 'templates'. I'm interested to see if the players coming up as best value matches that of popular opinion or whether any surprising names emerge.</p>
<p>Below are the factors that I'm using to identify the best value FPL players 'on paper' going into the new 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League season.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Opening fixtures. </strong>For this I am using the first six fixtures for each team, but discounted to reflect the effect of changes over time. Gameweek 1 is weighted at 100%, Gameweek 2 at 90%, and so on. I'm using the <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fixture-ticker/">Fantasy Football Hub Fixture Ticker</a> for this.</li>
<li><strong>'Nailed-on-ness' (expected minutes). </strong>How likely is the player to start every game and how many minutes? This is taken from the xMins section on <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/">Hub's OPTA stats tool</a> and combined with my own personal knowledge.</li>
<li><strong>Player quality.</strong> This is based on <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/">career stats</a> combined with my own opinion of each player's overall quality (not their team's).</li>
<li><strong>Team attacking <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/">stats</a>. </strong>For all players apart from goalkeepers, with more weighting given to midfielders and forwards (second half of 2021/22).</li>
<li><strong>Team defensive <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/">stats</a>. </strong>For goalkeepers, defenders and midfielders (to a lesser extent) (second half of 2021/22)</li>
<li><strong>Goal Involvement. </strong>Expected Goal Involvement (goals and assists) for the player (second half of 2021/22 season).</li>
<li><strong>Expected FPL Points</strong> - expected goals, assists, clean sheets, etc applied to the FPL points system for the player (second half of 2021/22).</li>
<li><strong>Price. </strong>Both absolute price, and amount over 'base price' (i.e. £4.0m for goalkeeper and defenders, £4.5m for others).</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>A few notes to bear in mind:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>I have included only players who were in the Premier League last season, as it's difficult to know how to equate performances in other leagues or lower divisions.</li>
<li>The Value Index figures mean nothing in their own right but are a relative measure against each other. The higher the number, the better value.</li>
<li>Defenders and Goalkeepers will <em>tend</em> to be better value than midfielders and forwards because FPL prices them more kindly, however we obviously can't fill our squad with all keepers and defenders, plus we'd end up leaving a lot of money in the bank.</li>
</ol>
<h2>The best value FPL goalkeepers 2022/23</h2>
<p>Here's where my first surprise came as I thought that one of the £4.5m keepers might come out on top for value.</p>
<p>However, according to the data, the best value keeper, and the second best value player <em>overall </em>is Liverpool's <strong>Alisson Becker (£5.5m)</strong> with a value index of <strong>35.5, </strong>driven by his team's excellent <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/">defensive stats</a> in the second half of last season, their good <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fixture-ticker-old/">opening fixtures</a> and his relatively low price of £5.5m.</p>
<p>Of course, the big downside of selecting him is that he limits the amount of valuable outfield Liverpool players you can own to just two.</p>
<p>It's a similar story for the second-best value goalkeeper, namely Manchester City's <strong>Ederson (£5.5m)</strong> at a value index of <strong>29.8. </strong>He has the same downside as his Brazilian colleague, using up a valuable Man City slot.</p>

<p>The third and fourth placed value keeper are very close, being Arsenal's <strong>Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m)</strong> at <strong>17.5</strong> and <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-tips-team-preview-chelsea/">Chelsea</a>'s <strong>Edourard Mendy (£5.0m)</strong> at <strong>17.4</strong>, nothing much to separate them.</p>
<p>So, it's interesting that the top teams' keepers are generally showing up as best value, despite being more expensive.</p>
<p>But what if you want to minimise your spend on your keeper, whilst keeping three outfield slots free for these teams? Well, according to my analysis, the best value <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-budget-goalkeepers/">budget keeper</a> is <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-brighton-fpl-players/">Brighton</a>'s <strong>Robert Sánchez (£4.5m). </strong>Maybe he'll be a good choice for those looking for a bargain between the sticks.</p>
