West Ham struggled in the Premier League in 2022/23 &#8211; here, we preview their FPL and wider fantasy football prospects for the 2023/24 campaign.

<h2>West Ham stats and best players</h2>
West Ham came into the 2022/23 season with high hopes, having finished seventh and sixth in the previous two league campaigns.
They spent around £165m on new players, including Lucas Paqueta, Danny Ings and Gianluca Scamacca.
But despite their Europa Conference League success, their domestic form suffered and manager David Moyes&#8217; future was called into question on several occasions.
In a <a href="https://twitter.com/OptaJoe/status/1666556485860556800">first for an English club</a>, the Hammers won more games in Europe (12) than in the league (11).
They finished 14th in the table and were among the teams battling against relegation until the final few games of the season.
A 1-0 away win over Manchester United put them on 37 points with three games to go, while a 3-1 penultimate-game victory over Leeds put them on 40 points, six clear of the eventual 18th placed Leicester.
The Moyes&#8217; sacking rumours failed to go away though and the Scot&#8217;s future was still in the balance in the run-up to the Europa Conference League final.
Fan unrest over his tactics and questions over the club&#8217;s recruitment were key issues &#8211; not helped by forward Michail Antonio stating on a <a href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/6nslVGmkyEbikkSsjOElHm">podcast</a> that Scamacca &#8216;can&#8217;t play the way the gaffer plays&#8217;.
But a European trophy should have secured Moyes&#8217; job for now.
The Hammers ultimately struggled to match the goalscoring of the previous seasons. Having netted 62 and 60 goals in 2020/21 and 21/22, they managed just 42 last season.
They also conceded more, however their expected goals conceded (xGC) was just inside the top ten best records in the league.

<h3>2022/23 season best players</h3>
New signing Ings was West Ham&#8217;s top scorer, chipping in with eight goals.
But that tally came nowhere near matching Jarrod Bowen&#8217;s leading contribution of 12 goals and 17 assists of the previous season.
Bowen had the highest expected goals (xG) figure in the team &#8211; 8.68 &#8211; but managed only six goals, plus nine assists.
He was tied on goals with Said Benrahma, who took on penalty duties, while Antonio found the net five times.
Paqueta, who joined from Lyon, had an mixed first season in the Premier League but finished well, ending with four goals and five assists.
Fellow new boy Scamacca struggled meanwhile, with injuries largely to blame for limiting him to 16 appearances, in which he scored three.
Lukasz Fabianski, who kept nine clean sheets, was West Ham&#8217;s second-highest FPL points scorer behind Bowen, with Declan Rice third thanks to his four goals and three assists.
Fabianski was the ninth-highest scoring goalkeeper in FPL, making the joint-fourth highest number of saves (108).

West Ham&#8217;s summer has so far been focused on the future of captain Rice, who has joined Arsenal.

Fantasy managers cannot yet be sure of who will start as number one between Fabianski and Alphonse Areola, a £4.0m goalkeeper in FPL.
There is still one pre-season game to go plus a pre-match press conference from Moyes, so our Gameweek 1 article may offer more clues.
Investment in central midfield will surely follow after Rice&#8217;s departure, however Flynn Downes could see more minutes this season.
Conor Coventry lined up alongside him in West Ham&#8217;s first pre-season friendly but Tomas Soucek is the main name expected to start in central midfield.

Bowen and Paqueta are likely to be among the surest starters, and Paqueta is a versatile midfielder who can play in a variety of positions.
Emerson is another likely starter at left-back, having performed well in pre-season.
Ings and Antonio, both in their 30s, could share game time. Antonio was rumoured to be heading to Saudi Arabia, however this appears to have fallen through.
Scamacca underwent knee surgery in April but was in the starting 11 for West Ham&#8217;s first pre-season friendly. The Italian has however been linked with a move back to his homeland.
Divin Mubama has played plenty of pre-season minutes and could be in line for some Premier League action in 2023/24 &#8211; but a start seems unlikely.
At the time of writing, the Hammers had yet to splash the transfer fee received for Rice.
But winger Carlos Borges has been one name in the mix, alongside a host of names in central midfield who could usurp Downes.

Aaron Creswell has been a regular set-piece taker for West Ham in previous seasons, however his reduced importance in the team has limited his influence.
Manuel Lanzini had in the past deputised on penalties for the now-retired Mark Noble, however it was Benrahma who became the main spot-kick taker last season.
Paqueta scored one in Gameweek 19 when Benrahma was off the pitch, while Rice and Bowen missed their sole efforts from 12 yards.

<h2>West Ham stats for Sky, TFF and Dream Team</h2>
Sky Sports Fantasy Football awards bonus points for passing, tackles, shots and saves. Players are awarded two or three extra points for 60/70 passes, four/five tackles, two/three shots on target and three/five saves.
In Sky, centre-backs and defensive midfielders are the ones who tend to pick up passing bonus most often. Tackles tend to come from full-backs and defensive midfielders.
Tackles are also a factor in Telegraph Fantasy Football for midfielders, who are awarded a point for every two tackles. Goalkeepers get one extra point for every save made.
And in Dream Team, the 2023/24 game has had a complete revamp. There&#8217;s no longer Star Man and WhoScored ratings, while a new bonus system is in play &#8211; see our guide <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/how-to-play-dream-team-fantasy-football-2">here</a> for full details.

With saves bonus achieved 21 times, Fabianski was the top Sky bonus scorer with 48. Rice was close behind on 42, courtesy of a mixture of passing and tackle tiers.
Paqueta managed 30 bonus points, primarily through tackle and shots tiers &#8211; but he also hit tier-one passing twice.
Only Fabianski (16th) made the top 20 Sky bonus scorers in the game, however Rice could be one to watch in Sky and Telegraph &#8211; particularly if he moves away from the Hammers.
