<p>James Maddison is the most overlooked player ahead of Blank Gameweek 30. <a href="https://twitter.com/FPL_JianBatra">Jian Batra</a> looks at why he just might be the best midfielder this gameweek.</p>

<h2>Brentford&#8217;s Tactical Achilles Heal</h2>
<p>Brentford will either operate in a 4-5-1 or a 5-3-2. Regardless, they play with three central midfielders, where one is more advanced than the other two. Since his introduction, that&#8217;s likely to be <strong>Christian Eriksen.</strong></p>
<p>Off the ball, the more advanced midfielder will press either the opposition&#8217;s ball carrier or try to cut out a <em>short</em> passing lane. The emphasis on short must be noted for future reference.</p>
<p>In order to avoid getting overloaded in the half space and wide areas, the other two central midfielders move into the half space, primarily to cut out passing lanes too. This works against opposition who play a 4-3-3 with two attacking Number 8s, because they can man mark those two players and nullify them in the process. But Leicester don&#8217;t play with two attacking Numbers 8s.</p>

<p>Therefore, when Eriksen cuts out a short passing lane, it leaves a fairly large central gap that a Number 10 can move forward into or a Number 9 can drop into. Brentford have been careful not to fill this gap with an advancing centre-back: they&#8217;d rather concede a high volume of chances than risk being completely exposed.</p>
<p>This vulnerability is hurting Brentford.</p>
<p>In fact, of the last eight goals that Brentford have conceded, six of the scorers operate in very central roles. Some of these players rarely score in the Premier League, yet they have filled their boots against the Bees.</p>
<p>Emile Smith Rowe, Kevin De Bruyne, Joao Moutinho, Teemu Pukki and Joe Willock have all added to single-digit goal tallies in recent games against Brentford. (Incidentally, Moutinho also got an assist in his game against Brentford, meaning 66% of his attacking returns this season came during the 90 minutes he&#8217;s played against Brentford).</p>
<p>Cue <strong>James Maddison (£6.7m).</strong></p>
<p>With his ability to play unbelievably well as a sole, central Number 10, there&#8217;s a huge haul potential for him in this fixture. He will find himself with a lot of space to operate in.</p>
<p>This will translate to more shots, more key passes and, if the pattern continues, more FPL points.</p>

<h2>Maddison&#8217;s Form Prior to Injury</h2>
<p>It gets better for Maddison&#8217;s prospects. Prior to his injury this man was easily one of the best players in the league. He looked unbelievable.</p>
<p>The eye test showed that he was central to everything Leicester did in multiple phases of play. To put that into an FPL points perspective, since Gameweek 13 <strong>Mohammed Salah</strong> has only scored 12 more points than him.</p>
<p>Brentford playing a slightly more expansive style of football will leave more space in behind for the likes of <strong>Patson Daka</strong> which Maddison will thrive off.</p>
<p>Maddison returned four double digit hauls in a five game period between Gameweeks 13-18. If that isn&#8217;t a massive ceiling, I don&#8217;t know what is.</p>

<p>Not only does bringing in Maddison ahead of Blank Gameweek 30 provide the opportunity for a double digit haul, but sets you up well for the rest of the season. At his price, he&#8217;s a good facilitator for the rest of the squad too.</p>
