<p class="article_headline">Portugal’s route to the 2022 World Cup didn't appear too difficult on paper, with their group containing Serbia, Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan.</p>
<p>After a narrow win over Azerbaijan, Portugal found themselves locked at 2-2 with group rivals Serbia.</p>
<p>When Cristiano Ronaldo looked to have given Portugal all three points with a late goal, Serbia cleared the ball, but only after it had clearly crossed the line. However, one man in the stadium who didn’t believe it had gone in was referee Danny Makkelie.</p>
<p>With no VAR or goal-line technology in operation, the goal was not given, and the referee was forced to apologise after the match for his mistake. This was of no consolation to Portugal, with two crucial points dropped.</p>
<p>Portugal made relatively easy work of the other teams in the group, although their performances were less than impressive - including a lacklustre 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland.</p>
<p>It quickly became clear that it would be a straight shoot-out between Portugal and Serbia for top spot in the group.</p>
<p>When the two faced off again, <strong>Aleksandar Mitrovic </strong>scored an injury time winner, condemning Portugal to the play-offs.</p>
<p class="article_headline">After beating Turkey 3-1 in the play-off semi-final, Portugal found themselves up against North Macedonia, who had shockingly knocked out Italy in the other semi.</p>
<p class="article_headline">Despite some bumps along the road however, Portugal eventually secured a 2-0 win in the final, with a <strong>Bruno Fernandes</strong> brace confirming their place at the World Cup.</p>

<h2><b>Portugal's form since qualifying for the World Cup 2022</b></h2>

<p>Since securing qualification, Portugal have played six games.</p>
<p>They won three of these six games, two of which were against the Czech Republic, plus a 4-0 win at home to Switzerland - with an aggregate score of 10-0 across these fixtures.</p>
<p>Manchester based full-backs <strong>Joao Cancelo</strong> and <strong>Diogo Dalot</strong> both scored two goals apiece across the three games, which could indicate that they are interesting fantasy options for the World Cup.</p>
<p>In the other three matches however, Portugal suffered a draw and a loss against Spain, as well as losing 1-0 away to Switzerland.</p>
