<p>Ranked the highest of any of the African nations, Senegal will have had high expectations of qualifying for Qatar.</p>
<p>Then ranked 20th in the world, the Lions of Teranga received a bye to the second round of qualifying.</p>
<p>The second round saw them placed in a group with Togo, Namibia and Congo - and progression proved a breeze.</p>
<p>Senegal were unbeaten in six games, winning five and drawing one.</p>
<p>That sole black mark came in their penultimate game of the group, when they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Togo.</p>
<p>A 4-1 victory against Namibia was the pick of their second-round results, with <strong>Sadio Mane</strong> among the goalscorers.</p>
<p>The end of round two of qualifying came in mid-November 2021, and sandwiched in between then and round three came a memorable Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).</p>
<p>Cisse's men made it all the way to the final, where they defeated Egypt on penalties after a tense 0-0 draw with their rivals, who were led by <strong>Mohamed Salah</strong>.</p>
<h3>Repeat performance required</h3>
<p>The result was an excellent sign for Senegal, as they would have to do it all over again to earn a place in Qatar.</p>
<p>But of course the AFCON final was not a hammering for Egypt, Salah and co., and the Pharaohs edged the first leg of third-round qualifying, thanks to a fourth-minute <strong>Saliou Ciss</strong> own-goal.</p>
<p>Little separated these two sides and in the second leg, Senegal led 1-0 after 90 minutes, meaning more extra time awaited.</p>
<p>No goals were forthcoming in 30 minutes however, so it fell to penalties - and a Salah v Mane billing once again - to settle the score.</p>
<p>With another huge prize on the line, both teams made a stuttering shootout start.</p>
<p>They both missed their first two penalties, with Salah failing to score his spot-kick.</p>
<p>With four penalties taken each, it fell to Senegal's AFCON hero Mane to convert the winning penalty again.</p>
<p>Salah will therefore join <strong>Erling Haaland </strong>as a high-profile World Cup absentee - good news for Premier League fantasy managers at least.</p>
<h2><b>Senegal's form since qualifying for the World Cup 2022</b></h2>
<p>Even AFCON champions don't get much chance to enjoy their success, as attention quickly turns to qualification for the next tournament.</p>
<p>After securing their place in Qatar on March 29, Senegal were in action in two AFCON qualifying matches in June.</p>
<p>They defeated Benin 3-1 and Rwanda 1-0.</p>
<p>In July, Senegal competed in the COSAFA Cup, a tournament held for nations part of the Council of Southern African Football Associations.</p>
<p>On-the-ball geographers will note Senegal is very much not in southern Africa - but the west-African nation took part as an invited guest.</p>
<p>They came third in the tournament - but it was not a useful guide for Senegal's pre-World Cup form, as their star players were not included in the squad for the event.</p>

<p>Senegal have no matches scheduled in before the World Cup, with the Iran game their last before the tournament begins.</p>

<p>Senegal could line up as follows.</p>
<p>It was announced on Thursday (November 17) that Mane would not play in Qatar due to a leg injury he sustained while playing for Bayern Munich earlier this month.</p>
<p>Senegal hoped he would be fit to play, having earlier ruled him out of the opening 'games'. But it was not to be for their talisman.</p>
