FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2026 promises to be an exciting game, with five chips to be played over just eight rounds of fixtures.
We outlined the boosters in our <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fifa-world-cup-fantasy-2026-how-to-play-guide">how-to-play guide</a>, but here we&#8217;ll give you some ideas of when best to play them.

<h3>Max Captain</h3>

This booster takes the guesswork out of selecting the best captain, saving the need to switch the armband around and gamble on a different pick outscoring your existing one.
It can be slotted in around the rest of your chips, however it may be best saved until later in the tournament.
With the group games offering numerous chances to change your captain, this booster could be more valuable in the knockouts when there are fewer opportunities to chase a big haul.
Many experienced fantasy managers will save it for the final, where there&#8217;s only one chance to get the decision right.

<h3>12th Man</h3>

<li>Booster summary: Select an extra player to score points for one match only &#8211; no budget or team restrictions</li>
</ul>
The 12th Man is a chip that requires careful thought.
Firstly, it&#8217;s important to select a certain starter, as the 12th Man cannot be substituted or changed post-deadline.
They also cannot be captained, so choosing a player you think will be the highest scorer of the round is not the wisest use of it &#8211; you may wish to transfer that player in normally instead.
Matchday 1 has plenty of players with strong fixtures.

Germany have a more difficult Matchday 2 game, so adding a third from Julian Nagelsmann&#8217;s squad against Curacao in Matchday 1 could be a good use of the 12th Man.
France or Brazil players could be popular 12th men in Matchday 2, playing Iraq and Haiti respectively. Both have tougher Matchday 1 games, while France face Norway in Matchday 3.
Kylian Mbappe owners could double up in attack with Michael Olise or Ousmane Dembele for example.
Les Bleus&#8217; challenging group in comparison to other top nations may limit investment outside Matchday 2, although their high-quality squad can do damage against any opposition and they will be highly owned.
Lamine Yamal&#8217;s fitness is a potential worry in Matchday 1. Even if he is fit to start &#8211; as indicated in some press reports &#8211; his may not play 90 minutes.
Adding him as a 12th Man against Saudi Arabia in Matchday 2 is a strategy to consider if there&#8217;s enough uncertainty over his readiness for the start of the tournament.

Eight rounds of fixtures makes World Cup Fantasy a short-form game, so using the Wildcard is less of a long-term planning chip like it is in FPL.
Many will therefore use the Wildcard like a Free Hit, with Matchday 3 a good window to do so.
Some of the top teams may have secured qualification by this point, opening the door to rotation issues.
The Wildcard can be used to target teams with something still to play for &#8211; and followed by unlimited transfers being available before the first knockout round.
It could be saved for the knockouts, in case a surprise result decimates your squad.
But bear in mind that the other two chips, explained below, will only be available after the group stages.

The expanded 48 team tournament may lead to some lop-sided fixtures in the round of 32 that are easier to predict than tighter ties later on.
Stacking players from teams likely to progress is good planning, while activating the booster should bring an added benefit.

Officially, this booster will be revealed on June 24 after the group stage has concluded.
But eagle-eyed <a href="https://x.com/FPLJoeYT/status/2060434550128279643">FPL Joe</a> delved into the game&#8217;s code and spotted signs that the mystery was to be called the Clean Sheet Shield.
If the Qualification booster has been used in the round of 32, the last 16 or quarter-final stage could be a good bet. With the stakes high, goal projections could fall.
