<p>Four-time World Cup winners Germany came into World Cup qualifying as one of the top European seeds.</p>
<p>But their major tournament form has been found wanting in recent years. They were dumped out by England in the round of 16 of Euro 2020 and failed to make it out the group stages in Russia at the last World Cup.</p>
<p>With long-time manager Joachim Low replaced by ex-Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick in 2021, Germany's fortunes have experienced somewhat of a revival - and one of Europe's great nations are once again among the favourites to take the title.</p>
<p>To get to Qatar, though, Germany first had to navigate a six-team group. North Macedonia, Romania, Armenia, Iceland and Liechtenstein.</p>
<p>On paper, this was a straightforward group, with then 37th ranked Romania the weakest team top seeds Germany could have faced from pot two of the draw.</p>
<p>Nine wins and one loss - a record which left them nine points ahead of their nearest group rivals - meant the Germans lived up to their expectations.</p>
<h3>Racing to qualification</h3>
<p>Iceland were Germany's first victims, with <strong>Leon Goretzka</strong>, <strong>Kai Havertz </strong>and Manchester City's <strong>Ilkay Gundogan </strong>scoring in a 3-0 victory.</p>
<p><strong>Serge Gnabry</strong>, one of the joint-top scorers in qualifying, scored his first goal in a 1-0 away win over Romania.</p>
<p>Germany suffered a 2-1 surprise home defeat to North Macedonia next, with a Gundogan penalty the only joy on the night.</p>
<p>The Macedonians finished second in the group and went on to defeat Italy in the playoffs, showing a giant killing was within their reach.</p>
<p><strong>Leroy Sane</strong> and <strong>Timo Werner </strong>gave Germany a 2-0 win against Liechtenstein, before a 6-0 thumping of Armenia.</p>
<p>Gnabry grabbed a brace, with goals from Werner, <strong>Marco Reus</strong>, <strong>Jonas Hofmann </strong>and a debut goal for young forward <strong>Karim Adeyemi</strong>, 19.</p>
<p>Werner, Gnabry and Sane scored a goal apiece in the next game against Iceland, with defender <strong>Antonio Rudiger </strong>also netting in the 4-0 victory.</p>
<p>Gnabry scored for a third game running when Germany defeated Romania 2-1, with <strong>Thomas Muller </strong>getting his first of qualifying.</p>
<p>Germany registered another rout in a 4-0 away defeat of North Macedonia, with Havertz opening the scoring followed by two goals from Wener and a maiden goal for <strong>Jamal Musiala</strong>.</p>
<p>But that win paled into significance compared to the pasting received by Liechtenstein, who were hammered 9-0. A Gundogan penalty kicked proceedings off, alongside two own-goals, Sane and Muller braces  and single strikes by <strong>Marco Reus </strong>and <strong>Ridle Baku</strong>.</p>
<p>A 4-1 win over Armenia completed qualifying. Gundogan converted another penalty and scored another from open play, while Havertz and Hofmann added to their tallies.</p>
<p>Germany's free-scoring and tight defence saw them finish with a goal difference of +32, better in Europe only by England's +36.</p>

<h2><b>Germany's form since qualifying for the World Cup 2022</b></h2>
<p>The Germans' qualifying group ended in November 2021.</p>
<p>Their good form continued in March, when they secured a 2-0 friendly win over Israel, Werner and Havertz on the scoresheet.</p>
<p>They drew 1-1 with the Netherlands three days later, with Muller scoring.</p>
<p>And this was to be the first of four consecutive 1-1 draws - the stalemates coming with Italy, England and Hungary in June. Goals came from <strong>Joshua Kimmich</strong> and Hofmann twice.</p>
<p>A 5-2 home win over Italy jump-started Germany back to winning ways however, with goals from Kimmich, Muller, Gundogan - via the penalty spot - and two from Werner.</p>

<p>Flick has primarily lined his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, although he has been known to tweak this in the odd game.</p>
<p>Werner was a big name to be ruled out of the tournament due to injury.</p>
<p>And on November 22, it was confirmed Sane would miss Germany's opening game after missing training.</p>
