<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The USA were given a bye to the final round of CONCACAF (</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">North, Central American and Caribbean region) World Cup 2022 qualifying, by virtue of being among the highest-ranked teams in their confederation. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Americans needed to come in the top three of an eight-nation group to qualify automatically. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And this they did, just, avoiding the need for a playoff on goal difference ahead of Costa Rica. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">USA finished third, courtesy of seven wins, four draws and two losses.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They kicked off their campaign with a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to El Salvadar, before securing a point against Canada, who would eventually top the group. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Brenden Aaronson</strong>, who signed for Leeds United in the Premier League summer transfer window in 2022, scored the first goal of the USA’s qualification process.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aaronson was again on target in match day three, where USA got their first three points in a 4-1 away victory against Honduras. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A brace from <strong>Ricardo Pepi</strong> of Augsburg was enough to see off Jamaica next and the USA’s qualification efforts were well and truly on track. </span></p>
<h4>Unbeaten run halted</h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But their unbeaten run came to a halt in their next game three days later.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Manager Berhalter had started the likes of <strong>Tyler Adams</strong>, Aaronson and Pepi on the bench against Panama and the changes failed to pay off, with USA suffering a 1-0 loss away from home. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">USA fielded a stronger lineup three days later against Costa Rica and got back to winning ways, with Barcelona right-back <strong>Sergino Dest</strong> and an own-goal from goalkeeper <strong>Leonal Moreira</strong> earning the Americans a 2-1 win.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A tough opponent in Mexico followed and the USA grabbed a valuable three points at home, with <strong>Christian Pulisic</strong> on target for the first time in a 2-0 victory. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A 1-1 draw against Jamaica and a 1-0 win against El Salvador came before the USA’s second defeat of the group, with Canada claiming a 2-0 victory at home. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This left the USA with four games to go and at this point, they were in second place behind their North-American rivals. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Their automatic qualification was effectively secured with a game to spare, when they avenged their defeat to Panama with a 5-1 home hammering, Pulisic grabbing a hat-trick in the process. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It meant Costa Rica could not realistically overtake them in the final game and despite defeating USA 2-0, third place was secured by the Americans. </span></p>

<h2><b>USA's form since qualifying for the World Cup 2022</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The USA’s final World Cup qualification game took place on March 31. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since then, the team has taken part in two international friendlies and two CONCACAF Nations League games, with mixed success. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aaronson, <strong>Timothy Weah</strong> and <strong>Haji Wright</strong> all scored in the USA’s 3-0 win over Morocco on June 2. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They played Uruguay three days later, with the friendly ending 0-0. Both side fielded strong teams, with the likes of Liverpool’s <strong>Darwin Nunez</strong> turning out for Uruguay. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The CONCACAF Nations League games were held a week later, on June 11 and 15. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">USA routed Grenada 5-0, with four goals from 21-year-old <strong>Jesus Ferreira</strong> of FC Dallas, before rounding off with a 1-1 drawn against El Salvador. </span></p>
<p>September's games against World Cup competitors Japan and Saudi Arabia were not encouraging though.</p>
