<h2>World Cup injury news: Who&#8217;s out of Qatar?</h2>
The World Cup is the stage for the globe&#8217;s brightest footballing talents to showcase their skills.
But sadly it was not to be for many a top player.
The red flags built up weeks before the tournament was due to begin. Gini Wijnaldum&#8217;s fractured leg he suffered in August did not heal in time and Paul Pogba and N&#8217;Golo Kante were ruled out for France well before final squads were confirmed.
It was not the end of the bad news for Les Bleues, either. No sooner had they touched down in Qatar had young prospect Christopher Nkunku gone down with a knee injury, ending his tournament before it had began.
England have had their fair share of injuries, too. Reece James and Ben Chilwell both picked up problems which prevented them making the Three Lions squad.
An ankle injury in early November put paid to Timo Werner&#8217;s hopes of appearing in Qatar, while Senegal&#8217;s Sadio Mane went down in his final pre-World Cup game for Bayern Munich.
Desperate to make the World Cup, Senegal&#8217;s Africa Cup of Nations hero was named in the squad and it was hoped he could be fit for the latter part of the group stages.
But he was forced to withdraw and underwent surgery on a leg injury on Thursday (November 17).
And Spain&#8217;s squad was affected when full-back Jose Gaya was sent home with an ankle injury.
<h3>Update 19/11/22</h3>
Karim Benzema was an injury doubt for at least France&#8217;s opening game against Australia, after rumours of a training ground injury on Saturday (November 19).
But the Ballon d&#8217;Or winner is now confirmed to be out of the whole tournament.
The French national team&#8217;s Twitter page said: &#8220;Karim <a class="css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1cvl2hr r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0" dir="ltr" role="link" href="https://twitter.com/Benzema">@Benzema </a>has pulled out of the World Cup with a thigh injury. The whole team shares Karim&#8217;s disappointment and wishes him a speedy recovery.&#8221;

<h3>Update 22/11/22</h3>
The German football team confirmed Leroy Sane would miss his side&#8217;s opener against Japan on Wednesday (November 23) after <a href="https://twitter.com/DFB_Team/status/1594952203709865984">missing training</a>.
The Bayern Munich player had been at risk of missing the tournament after picking up a thigh injury in October, however he made Hansi Flick&#8217;s final squad.
The latest issue is thought to relate to his knee. There has been no confirmation about his fitness for the World Cup past the first game.

<h2>World Cup injury news: Who faces a race against time to be fit?</h2>
A host of household names &#8211; in their home countries at the very least &#8211; have successfully made it to Qatar, however their participation in at least some of the group stages remains uncertain.
FPL managers may know all too well of the troubles of Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian striker picked up an ankle issue in the September international break and missed games for Fulham in between then and the World Cup break.
His international manager said Mitrovic would go to the World Cup &#8216;without a leg&#8217; &#8211; but even with two, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to face Brazil in Serbia&#8217;s opener. The game is not until Thursday (November 24), a few extra days which may help him to recover.
Romelu Lukaku has been frustrated by injuries this season and is expected to miss at least Belgium&#8217;s opener against Canada, according to reports.
Canada&#8217;s Alphonso Davies and Raphael Varane also face a race against time to make their respective nations&#8217; first games.
