<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">England opened their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 5-0 victory at home to San Marino. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It was a scoreline they doubled in the away tie, rounding off qualification with a 10-0 drubbing of the European minnows. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Harry Kane</strong> scored four goals in that final match, taking him to 12 in qualifying, the best tally in the European section alongside the Netherlands’ <strong>Memphis Depay</strong>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Three Lions were unbeaten over ten games, dropping points away to Poland and at home to Hungary. Both were 1-1 draws. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first three matches of qualification came before England’s run to the Covid-delayed Euro 2020 final in 2021, where they came agonisingly close to lifting the trophy but lost 4-3 on penalties to Italy. </span></p>
<h2><b>England's form since qualifying for the World Cup 2022</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The highs of 2021 have yet to be matched in 2022.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Friendly wins in March against Switzerland and Ivory Coast were positive enough, however the team’s UEFA Nations League performances in June failed to live up to the 2021 hype, as England struggled to find the back of the net.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A 1-0 loss to Hungary followed a stalemate against Germany (1-1) and a Euro 2020 final rematch versus Italy finished 0-0.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But indifferent post-Premier League season form turned to catastrophe when they were routed 4-0 by the Hungarians in a behind-closed-doors match Gareth Southgate’s men may have preferred not to be televised, too. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Nations League returned in September, with England travelling to Italy and then hosting Germany. </span></p>
<p>The poor form continued with a 1-0 defeat to Italy, which confirmed their relegation from the top tier of the Nations League.</p>
<p>And Southgate's side sent themselves on the way to Qatar with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Germany. <strong>Luke Shaw</strong>, <strong>Mason Mount </strong>and Kane - via the penalty spot - scored the goals.</p>
